National Forest fees may be on the rise

PARK FALLS, Wis. -- Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest campground and daily use fees may increase by $2 to $3 a night, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.

Current fees range from $3 to $15 a night, and the new fees would be from $5 to $20 a night, with an average cost of $12.

Forest Service officials said the new fee structure is needed to keep up with maintenance and improvements.

Day use sites, including trailheads, boat launches and beaches, would increase to either $5 per day or $20 for an annual vehicle pass. Now, the fees are $3 and $10.

Proposed increases would take effect this summer.

Fees in the Chequamegon-Nicolet have not increased since 1998.

Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed increases can send concerns to Phil Barker, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, 68 S. Stevens St., Rhinelander, WI 54501.
