RV Manufacturer Marathon Coach still humble amid extravagance

COBURG, Oregon- First, get your bearings.

It's the building along Interstate 5, near the Coburg exit, with the "Marathon" sign that fades to different colors in the night and jolts you awake on your return trip from Portland.

It's not Monaco Coach, its neighbor to the west, which is no slouch in the motor home industry either but, with Marathon around, will never be the swankiest home on the block.

And it's not symbolized by a couple of geezers swishing Budweisers in their lawn chairs outside their RV at a KOA park while the Li'l Smokies heat up inside to enliven the Happy Hour.

Put it this way: The people who own these vehicles are the people who could own Budweiser. The price range for these land yachts is $1.4 million to $2 million.

Each chassis is driven to Coburg from its birthplace at the Prevost company in Quebec, Canada. Each is akin to a framed house. What they do at Marathon - the largest Prevost converter in the world - is build the interiors and paint the exteriors...
