O'Neil Creek Campground swells to thousands during summer

Chippewa Herald - Chippewa Falls,WI,USA
TOWN OF TILDEN - It’s Friday morning and Brian Mitchell is buzzing through his miniature city on a golf cart.

Residents wave friendly hellos as they tend to their gardens, manicure their lawns or just enjoy a morning cup of coffee as they sit enjoying the morning breeze blowing between a heavy growth of pine and oak trees.

It’s another morning at the O’Neil Creek Campground a sprawling community that can reach nearly 2,000 residents on a summer weekend in Chippewa County.

The size of the campground with its 270 permanent campsites, 100 weekend sites and four cabins surprises many.

Even bigger than the physical grounds the campground sits on is the sense of family among those who call O’Neil Creek their summer home.

Take Neal Robinson, for example. A former Wisconsin resident now residing in Texas, Robinson has been spending summers at O’Neil Creek since 1994.

“This is a nice location,” Robinson said, looking out his screened porch at a beautiful growth of hardwood trees.

“It’s nice up here. It’s nice and quiet and not filled with a lot of people during the week,” said Robinson, who this year will call O’Neil Creek home from April 15 to about mid-October.
