Fire Destroys Vacationers' RV

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A stretch of the Interstate 80 westbound was closed for more than two and a half hours because of an recreational vehicle fire.

Traffic came to a standstill east of the Mitchelville exit on the Polk County line and had to be detoured south of Colfax.

Mike and Karen Gilomen and their dog were on I-80 from Wisconsin to Arizona for a vacation, when their Patriot Thunder went up in flames.

"It went up so fast," Mike Gilomen said.

They were pulling a trailer with a Corvette inside. They said that everything is gone that was there.

The Iowa State Patrol said it believes there was a broken fuel line on the motorhome that lead to the fire. Officials said the RV leaked a trail of fuel for miles.
