Brannan Island State Recreation area beckons boaters - in a kayak or powerboat - with easy camping, fishing and waterways

If this waterfront spot were for sale, it would cost a few million bucks to put a home here. But you can have it right now for $5 a day or $15 a night with a tent or RV.

That is the beauty of Brannan Island State Recreation Area on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. You don't need to be a millionaire to live like one here.

Plus, few places in California offer waterfront sites right now. With so many lakes drained very low to get water south this past year, many picnic areas and campsites, like at Shasta, Oroville and Folsom, are now hundreds of feet above the water level.
