Workers report RV plant layoffs

ELKHART -- Eric Krause remembers the meeting Forest River Inc. officials held with employees inside the company's Plant No. 40.

The RV plant's production line, which churns out diesel motor homes, was down to operating four days a week, Krause said.

"They said they were not going to be laying off," he said.

But on Dec. 7, Krause and other workers inside the plant were laid off. Krause estimates about 52 workers received pink slips. Another laid-off worker, Alex Larson, estimated about 40 people lost their jobs.

The company is one of Elkhart County's largest employers. It had 4,700 employees in January 2007, according to data from the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County.
