South Walton Florida invites cycling, splashing, reading

Revelry of a different kind brought in the New Year on the Gulf Coast.

Call it reveling in relaxation on the beaches of South Walton County in Florida's panhandle. The little beaches east of Destin drew small droves of Southerners for the last and first celebrations of the year.

Traffic was sparse on the highway. Trucks of produce sat on roadsides offering bargains on strawberries and oranges before the onslaught of predicted cold weather. The sun was bright, the weather warm - pushing 70.

Here's a tip: Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is the Crown Jewel of the Emerald Coast, and it's less than a five-hour drive from Birmingham. Take U.S. 331 out of Montgomery to U.S. 98.
