Improving Point Mallard Park’s Campground

The Decatur Daily - Decatur,AL,USA
Officials plan to expand sewer hookups at Point Mallard sites, cable and Internet.

Recreational vehicles and pop-up tents spotted the landscape at Point Mallard Park’s campground in record-setting numbers last year.

The lure of the outdoors reeled in a record revenue of $328,005 for the 2006 fiscal year. And the 2007 fiscal year topped that number by more than $57,000.

Planned improvements include expanding sewer hookups to the 37 campsites in Section D. Currently, 96 of the campground’s 210 sites lack sewer connections.

“The sewer hookups will bring in more people, that’s the key thing they (campers) ask for. If we don’t have it, they will find another campground with sewer,” said Barry Smith, the park’s superintendent.

“The campground has been unbelievable ... it would be crazy not to invest back into the campground,” Dunlap said.

“Making more full-service sites is an excellent idea ... I don’t know if it will bring in more people, the campground is already filled,” Hammon said. “... If we do anything else, we may have to expand and put in more campsites.”
