Retirement is a Time to Dream

When Peggi and John McDonald hung up their uniforms in 1986 after long careers in the Canadian Armed Forces, they felt they could use a two-year road trip. After all, John had been at sea for 23 years and Peggi had spent 26 years in the air force. It was time to keep their feet on solid ground and launch a dream tour.

Although they were only in their mid-40s, they sold their four-bedroom Toronto house for about $117,000, and purchased a Fleetwood Pace Arrow recreational vehicle. They were eligible for an immediate pension -- about 50% of their income -- worth about $1,500 each per month.
