RV owners knock Manteca, CA parking restrictions

MANTECA, CA — City Hall overflowed with people Thursday, Jan. 31, as a crowd of more than 70 residents turned out at a public workshop to complain about city restrictions on parking recreational vehicles.

Councilmen Steve DeBrum and John Harris called for the public meeting to consider changes to a city law that prohibits residents from parking more than one boat, motor home, camper trailer or any other type of RV in their backyards or side yards.

A new draft law based on the speakers’ comments will be up for debate at a similar workshop next month. After that, the draft will go before the planning commission and finally to the City Council.

Nearly all of the dozens who spoke at the hearing were in favor of fewer parking limitations, asking councilmen to let them keep whatever they wished in their back yard — as long as it was fenced in and did not block the neighbors’ view.

Several speakers referred to their rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” while others brought up Manteca’s “Family City” slogan to argue that limiting RVs would limit family outings.
