AZ Ranger Districts Recreation Site Openings/Closings

White Mountain Independent - Show Low,AZ,USA

On the Springerville Ranger District, State Route 261 opened last Friday from Eagar to Big Lake.

Forest Road 249 from Alpine to Big Lake is also open. The lake is mostly ice-free, but no campgrounds are open at this time. The Big Lake store is not open yet.

SR 273 from Sunrise Ski Area to Big Lake is closed due to road construction. The two campgrounds at Greer are closed. On the Lakeside Ranger District, Fool Hollow Campground in Show Low is open as well as the Los Burros, Scott Reservoir and Lewis Canyon campgrounds.

On the Alpine Ranger District, the Hannagan Meadow area has snow in drifts that are restricting road access. Hannagan Campground is closed due to snow, as is KP Cienega Campground. Alpine Divide Campground is open, and the campsites along the East Fork of the Black River are accessible now. The West Fork Campground is partially accessible as the streams are difficult to cross. Luna Lake Campground is closed.

On the Black Mesa Ranger District, FR 300 and 105 are open to Woods Canyon Lake. FR 300 west of Woods Canyon Lake is open only as far as the junction with FR 169. The Forest Service anticipates having the west side of the district and the access roads to Bear Canyon Lake open by the end of next week.

Woods Canyon Lake is ice-free, and the boat ramp is now accessible. On other lakes in the district, Willow Springs, Black Canyon and Chevelon Canyon are all ice-free and accessible. The only lake on the district not accessible is Bear Canyon Lake; roads are closed due to snowdrifts and mud. As far as campgrounds, 60 sits on the Aspen campground opened Friday. However, the site does not have water and the dump station is closed.

The Sinkhole, Crook and Canyon Point campgrounds are also open. On the Canyon Point Campground, only Loop A is open, but the showers and dump station are closed. Water systems are not yet in operation, so visitors will need to bring their own potable water. In addition, fees are in effect.

The Woods Canyon Dump station is also closed.

Chevelon Crossing Campground and Chevelon Lake Campground are accessible via FR 504 and FR 169. There are no fees, water or garbage receptacles so visitors must remove their trash. In dispersed camping, FR 9350 and FR 195 are open. The roads east of Forest Lakes are drying, but dispersed campers should use caution when pulling off main roads as vehicles may become stuck due to wet soil conditions. At the Clifton Ranger District, most campgrounds are open.
RV Education 101 has bundled it's instructional DVDs into cost saving Value Packs. Each of the three packs includes four training DDVDs (3 hours of information) that help RVers understand how an RV works, and how to maintain and use their RV. There are DVD sets for motorized or towable units.
