Camping with kids

Before Lisa Mascio-Thompson and her husband ventured off to the woods for a camping trip with their 2-year-old son, they set up camp in their back yard.

“Luckily, we did that first instead of going far away because we were back inside within an hour,” Mascio-Thompson recalled. “Lucas was freaking out with all the noises and shadows. It was quite an experience.”

“We are going to try and go again though this spring. We are going to go to Buffalo Trace Park in Palmyra, which is only a half-hour away in case we have to come home,” she said.

The family is on the right track, according to Goldie Silverman, author of “Camping With Kid: The Complete Guide to Car, Tent, and RV Camping.”, who in her book suggests parents “find a campground that is close to home (no long drives the first time), offers a lake for cooling off and swimming, and easy hiking trails.”
