Assateague Island National Seashore will be open by Memorial Day Weekend

Campground renovations are now complete and the bayside and oceanside sites at Assateague Island National Seashore will be open to visitors in time for the Memorial Day Weekend rush.

The construction of improvements at the Maryland end of the park were funded in part by recreation fees collected at the national seashore, Superintendent Scott Bentley said.

However, construction continues at the North Beach parking area, which will limit the number of parking spaces to 200. When complete, there will be a total of 523 parking spots. The bathhouses and rinse-off showers will also not be available. Portable toilet facilities will be provided.
