Campground Gets Ready for the Worst

GRAND TOWER, IL, - Jimmy Chandler had his pickup truck backed up to his sister's RV Tuesday, ready to pull out of the Devil's Backbone Park campground whenever the flooding Mississippi River makes it to pack up and head out.

Chandler's sister, a truck driver, is on a work trip to Oregon.

About 35 guests have already been evacuated from the campground, and more will likely have to leave soon.

"It's definitely going to hurt us," said Michael Ellet, park manager. The park has seen an increase in camping - its primary source of revenue - since other campgrounds and state parks increased nightly fees. "Now with the river like that, it's scared a lot of people off.
