City should stay out of Wal-Mart verses Campgrounds debate

Several businesses in town have fallen victim to Wal-Mart; to a lesser extent, the same could be said about Cabela’s. But whereas the city did not — and could not — make laws to protect other local businesses from Wal-Mart’s mighty reach, the city also shouldn’t come to the aid of the campgrounds that are suffering due to overnight access afforded by Cabela’s and Wal-Mart. Too, it could be considered a conflict for the city to get involved, since it operates its own campground near Lake Mitchell.

Is allowing parking-lot camping right? Well, it’s not legally wrong, although we certainly understand campground owners’ displeasure.

At the same time, we think the city should stay out of this one.
