Mississippi to Restore Buccaneer State Park by 2010

Buccaneer State Park, one of the most visited among the state's 24 parks, was obliterated by Hurricane Katrina and remains closed nearly three years later.

Named for the pirates who used the area as a retreat in the 1700s, Buccaneer featured acres of campgrounds and outdoor recreation, including a Frisbee golf course and a five-acre water park, Buccaneer Bay.

The park's restoration is planned in three phases. Rebuilding the campground, bathrooms and pavilions is the state's first objective.
