Northeast Ohio campgrounds offer close-to-home getaways

Campers are pitching their tents and anchoring their recreational vehicles closer to home as the price of gasoline continues to rise.
Last year, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Recreation saw the number of campers at 57 of the agency's parks increase 6 percent - to 1.88 million.

Over this Memorial Day holiday, the parks division also saw 32 campgrounds full, a new record and up from last year's 26 full campgrounds.

"At least in our case the goal is to keep people in Ohio and outdoors. We want to make our parks friendly for campers," said Dan West, chief of the Parks and Recreation Division.
