Corps of Engineers in SC Extending Camping

Greenville News - Greenville,SC,USA
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Hartwell Lake is extending camping seasons at three campgrounds: Oconee Point and Coneross both in Oconee County, and Crescent Group Campground in Anderson County.

Oconee Point and Crescent Group Campground will now remain open until Oct. 31, and Coneross will be open until Sept. 30, according to a press statement from the Corps of Engineers. All three campgrounds were originally scheduled to close Sept. 9.

"Many Corps lakes throughout the Southeast are operating under significant budget restrictions this year," said Tanya Grant, a park ranger at Hartwell Lake. "As part of an overall cost savings plan at Hartwell Lake, the Corps identified several parks and campgrounds for possible closures or shorter operating seasons to meet reduced funding levels."

Corps officials focused efforts to serve as many customers as possible by concentrating efforts on the parks and campgrounds that receive the highest visitation. Many areas are only open during the busiest portion of the recreation season, which historically runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Coneross, Oconee Point and Crescent Group Campground faced season reductions.
