Helpful Camper is Critically Injured

Globe and Mail - Canada
Don Morrison spends his summers on plot 25 of Malton's Indian Line Campground.

One of dozens of seasonal residents of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority site, Mr. Morrison, 72, lives alone with his small dog, Sandy. Neighbours say he keeps to himself, lending a hand when he can.

"He's a very quiet, reserved person," fellow camper Linda Thon said.

Just after midnight yesterday, the path outside plot 25 was crossed by a group of campers - reportedly including a screaming woman whose cries had already alerted TRCA campground security - but it was Mr. Morrison who first met them.

Moments later, the retiree was "sucker-punched," hit his head on the pavement and was knocked unconscious, according to neighbours.

"Supposedly, Don just came up and said, 'Hey, what's going on?' And that's when they plowed him," said Ms. Thon, a seven-year seasonal resident who woke to the noise at 12:17 a.m. yesterday.

"Our victim was acting in a good Samaritan capacity," Peel police Sergeant Zahir Shah said.
