Monaco Coach to Close Indiana Plants

The Register-Guard - Eugene,OR,USA
COBURG OR — Buffeted by brutal market conditions and with no turnaround in sight, Monaco Coach Corp. announced Thursday that it was shutting three of its plants in Indiana and eliminating one-third of its total workforce.

A total of 1,400 hourly and salaried jobs will be eliminated, all in Indiana, and about 100 Indiana jobs will be moved to the company’s Coburg operations sometime in the fourth quarter, company spokesman Craig Wanichek said.

“There’s definitely going to be an increase here” in employment, Wanichek said.

Monaco said it would close its plants in Wakarusa, Elkhart and Nappanee, effective Sept. 17, and relocate all service and production operations. Production of most of the motorized units will be moved to Coburg. Towable units and gas-powered motor homes will be built in Warsaw, Ind.

The plant closures will cut Monaco’s production capacity in half, from 180 motor homes a week to 90 a week, Wanichek said.
