Horseneck Beach Campers Petition Against Eviction

Fall River Herald News - MA, USA
Horseneck Beach campers greatly cherish the view of Buzzards Bay from their RV campsites on the beach. So much so that more than 700 have signed a petition urging the state to ditch its plan to move the 32 waterfront campsites inland to protect the dunes.
Many who were lucky enough to secure a spot along the water said they won’t return if their coveted spaces are taken away.

“Why, all of a sudden, is there this feeling that we’re ruining the beach?” asked Betty Weeden of Portsmouth, R.I., who for years has gone to the campground with her husband. Weeden has circulated a petition this summer that she said has more than 700 signatures. She plans to send the petition to Gov. Deval Patrick and state Reps. Michael Rodrigues of Westport and David Sullivan of Fall River.

After Oct. 12, DCR will begin removing the waterfront camp sites. DCR hasn’t determined specifics of the new setup.

“While this may be disappointing to some,” DCR Commissioner Richard K. Sullivan Jr. said in June in an open letter to campers, “the reconfiguration allows us to continue offering camping while properly preserving the dunes, plans and animal habitat at Horseneck Beach.”
Sullivan said allowing camping in the dunes, which have been washed away over the campground’s four-decade history, has come “at a tremendous cost” to the landscape.
