Aspen Colorado area campgrounds start to close

Aspen Times - Aspen,CO,USA
ASPEN — Independence Pass east of Aspen typically is spectacular by late September, but don’t expect to find camping accommodations there.

Along with autumn’s breathtaking display of foliage comes the closure of various campgrounds around Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley.

Lincoln Gulch, Lost Man and Weller campgrounds, all located off Highway 82 as it winds up the pass, are already closed for the season. Difficult, located east of town at the base of the pass, remains open until Sept. 21, according to the White River National Forest website. With 47 campsites, Difficult is the largest campground in the vicinity of Aspen.

Farther down the valley, some campgrounds will remain open through big-game hunting season. The Redstone and Avalanche campgrounds — both off Highway 133, south of Carbondale — will remain open until Nov. 9, while Bogan Flats, farther south, near Marble, will be open until Sept. 28, according to the Forest Service website.
