Yakima's KOA Campground now belongs to feds

Yakima’s KOA Campground now belongs to the taxpayers.

The federal Bureau of Reclamation on Friday completed purchase of the 23-acre campground, north of the new State Route 24 bridge over the Yakima River.

The total purchase price, including land and equipment, is almost $2.2 million.

Walt Larrick, assistant manager of the federal program that is seeking to buy water rights and land to improve habitat in the basin, said the camp is now closed to public use.

The current permanent residents, about 30 renters in mobile homes and recreational vehicles, will receive help in relocating elsewhere, Larrick said.
