Motor homes are home sweet home at Wal-Mart

ORVIN BROWN emerged from his comfy home Sunday evening and stepped right into a Wal-Mart parking lot.

It's a home-sweet-home-on-wheels that spreads out to 465 square feet.

Orvin and Barbie Brown's residence was parked on a handful of car spaces outside Wal-Mart, far from the store's entrance, facing the Delaware River and Camden. The couple - she's 72, he's 62 - sold their Renton, Wash., home, rid themselves of many belongings and bought the 2005 vehicle to discover the world. This was their first visit to Philadelphia.

Their motor home had company in the lot, where another RV, several trucks and a couple of vans also were parked.

Drivers from all over the country stay in the South Philadelphia Wal-Mart parking lot for a night or two - or five. They say they do it because the store's manager lets them, because it's free, because the area is safe and because they have no other options near the city.
