Passport cards popular with Texas snowbirds

SAN BENITO - When Georgena Allen walks back from Mexico, she flashes her new card that's her ticket across the border.

Like more residents in the Rio Grande Valley, she uses a passport card instead of the traditional passport book.

"It's so much easier going across the border now," said Allen, a resident at Fun N Sun Resort who got her passport card three weeks ago after applying a month earlier.

"We just show the card. We don't have to show our driver's license," she said. "I carry a small change purse and it fits like a credit card."

More and more residents are applying for the passport card instead of the traditional passport book, said Carlos Mesa, a clerk at the Harlingen Post Office.
