Snowbirds say they're coming, Florida banking on it

The stormy economy doesn't appear to be stopping snowbirds from returning.

That's according to a survey by The News-Press and of 429 northern residents who flock to Southwest Florida each year.

More good news: Nearly 40 percent of those responding expect to arrive this month; more than 60 percent said they'll spend about as many dollars as they did last year.

Prather is quite hopeful for a good snowbird season. He sees significant year-over-year increases in advance bookings for November and beyond, but added: "Right now, local consumer spending is as bleak as I've ever seen it here."
