Sportshow feeling economic headaches

Jerry and Betty Fisher have been in the resort business for 22 years, but they can’t remember a time when they have entered a season with so many concerns.

The slumping economy has hit the outdoors industry hard. Nowhere is that more evident than in Canada, where fishing lodges such as the Fishers’ that once did booming business are now just trying to weather the storm.

The number of exhibitors is down one-third from normal. Hit especially hard are the boat and RV sections, where the number of participating dealers has decreased sharply.

Many dealers who are just struggling to survive can’t afford the expense of displaying their products at a sports show.
