Larrabee State Park CG closed until April

Bellingham Herald - Bellingham,WA,USA
The 85-site campground at Larrabee State Park is closed through April for a project to renovate the wastewater treatment system.

"It's a safety issue. They'll be in there with huge equipment," said ranger Scott W. Chalfant, who manages Larrabee.

The rest of the park remains open.

The $1.3-million project will be done by Boss Construction of Bellingham as part of Gov. Chris Gregoire's initiative to clean up Puget Sound and the Hood Canal.

The campground at Larrabee isn't in high use during February, but the demand will pick up in March and April, depending on the weather, Chalfant said.

"We're hoping it doesn't go until the end of April," he said of the closure, which began Monday, Feb. 9.

Until the Larrabee campground re-opens, campers are being encouraged to go to Birch Bay State Park or Bay View State Park down in Skagit County.
