Alabama's DeSoto State Park campground reopens

This weekend's cold, wet weather surely wasn't what Ken Thomas had hoped to see, but the reopening of the DeSoto State Park campground on Friday was like a ray of sunshine anyway.

The campground once voted one of the 10 best in the Southeast had been closed for 13 months for renovation. Almost daily Thomas, the state park's superintendent, has had to field the question "When are you going to open again?"

"The Alabama State Parks Web site has been conducting a survey about state parks and the No. 1 question has been from people wanting to know when our campground is going to open again," he said. "I'm proud to say now we're open."
