Camping Reservations up 6% at NY state parks
ALBANY, N.Y. - New York officials say camping reservations around the state are up 6 percent from this time last year because families are apparently trying to save money on vacation plans.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has 45,300 advance reservations compared to about 42,600 in March 2007.

Parks Commissioner Carol Ash says camping and visits to state parks are a more attractive and affordable option for New Yorkers in the struggling economy.

The popularity of state parks has been rising each year, with 2008 being a record year with 137,000 advance campground reservations.

The agency oversees 67 campgrounds with more than 8,000 campsites, 800 cabins and 41 vacation rentals.

Parks charge varying fees for access to campgrounds.
