Albany Times Union - Albany,NY,USA

The state expects to save $300,000 this summer by cutting back on the time 10 Capital Region state parks will be open.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said the cuts in the Saratoga-Capital District Region are part of $5.07 million in statewide budget reductions this summer that will trim operations at 100 of the state's 178 parks, campgrounds and historic sites.

"It's disappointing to have to close the pools and beaches to this extent,'' Alane Chinian, the regional director, said Thursday.

In addition to eliminating days of swimming from the summer schedule, daily pool openings are being cut by one hour.

The Saratoga-Capital District Region's parks account for 10 percent of the 100 parks and historic sites statewide that will see their hours of operation reduced.
