New York's budget crunch delays campground openings

SYRACUSE, NY -- That "stay-cation" you were planning to take at a New York state park just got a little more complicated.

State beaches and campgrounds across the Empire State -- including some favorite getaway spots surrounding Syracuse -- will open for the season later and close for the year earlier than usual, the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced.

All told, about 100 state recreational facilities are affected by the cutbacks.

For example, all state campgrounds in the nine-county Central Region that includes Onondaga County open on May 15, one to two weeks later than customary for most of them, but five weeks tardy for Chenango Valley State Park in Chemung County. Most will close on Columbus Day, a few weeks early; Selkirk Shores is the exception, closing on Sept. 14.
