Go Camping to Cut Vacation Costs

In times like these, sleeping under the stars, breathing fresh air and toasting marshmallows becomes a popular family vacation.

"We are seeing a great interest in camping this year, which is true in any year when the economy is not quite so great," says Linda L. Profaizer, president and CEO of the National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds. There has been an increased interest in tent camping in particular; its affordability appeals to beginners, she says.

A camping trip is an "entry level" vacation, says Mike Gast, a spokesman for campground operator Kampgrounds of America, or KOA. That's because it's often an inexpensive getaway -- especially if it doesn't involve a long drive. Many times this type of vacation is the last to get cut when a family's budget tightens and the first to return when funds come back.
