Michigan residents gassing up but not going far

Sentinel-Standard - Ionia,MI,USA
IONIA - Despite the climbing gas prices, the $4 per gallon prices of last summer are not expected to return.

“We don't anticipate gas prices being anywhere near what they were last year,” said Nancy Cain, public relations officer for AAA.

Gas stations, on the other hand, see prices on the rise.

“We get the reports every morning,” said Adam Khan, manager at Ionia Marathon. “I think it's going to go up, maybe to $3.”

Last year when gas prices were up over $4 per gallon, local gas stations were keeping retail price so close to what they paid for gasoline that they weren't profiting.

“We're in the same situation now,” Khan said.

Gas was running people over $1.50 more per gallon at this time last year, according to Cain.

Gas prices may be down this summer as compared to last year, but don't expect to see more cars on the road because of it.

“We anticipate that travel will be on par with last year,” Cain said. “We know that people aren't going to spend as much as they did, nor stay as long, however.”
