Wisconsin's campsites offer cheap, family fun

Spending time in the great outdoors ranks as the classic Wisconsin summer experience. But a long trip to the Northwoods is not necessary to achieve the ambience of the woods and water.

Escape to camping getaways close to Oshkosh and other cities in the region. The short drive is barely enough time for the kids to utter the first anxious “Are we there yet?”

With many families pinching pennies this year, nearby campgrounds also provide a budget-friendly getaway option.

“We know that travelers tend to stay closer to home and visit tried-and-true destinations when the economy is down,” said Lisa Marshall, Wisconsin Department of Tourism spokeswoman. “Camping is a very economical way to travel, and we are finding that leisure travelers don’t want to give up their vacation but are looking for ways to make it more affordable.”
