Government Parks & Campgrounds to Honor Veterans and Active Military

On Veterans Day, all U.S. military veterans and current members of the U.S. armed forces and their families will be admitted free of charge on to public lands managed by both the Department of the Interior and the Departments of Agriculture.

Since the Buffalo National River does not charge an entrance fee, campground fees will be waived in lieu of entrance fees. The waived campground fees are specific to Buffalo National River for any fee camping areas within the park for that night only. For more information, call the Tyler Bend Visitor Center at (870) 439-2502.

On leave waivers offered

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive all day use and camping fees for active service personnel and Department of Defense (DoD) civilians on mid- or post-deployment leave from duty in support of the Overseas Contingency Operations.

The program began in 2006 to honor the men and women who serve the nation.

Active service personnel and DoD civilians on leave will be required to show identification and leave orders upon arrival at the campgrounds to obtain the waiver. The waiver will also apply to all family members accompanying them on their visit. The waiver will be applied to daily use fees and camping fees.

Fees will be waived on a walk-up and space-available basis, as well as for reservations through the National Recreation Reservation Service call center. Camping and day use fees, however, will not be waived for on-line reservations made through Recreation.gov.

Families Trading In Homes For RVs

Some families faced with unemployment and uncertain financial futures are choosing to sell their homes and live their lives on the road in motor homes.

MSNBC reports that according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, about 400,000 Americans live life on the road. Moreover, Kimberly Goza, who runs a Web site for families who live in RVs, noted that recently their traffic has increased tenfold--a consequence, some believe, of the recession's toll on families' abilities to afford mortgages.

Dave and Joleen Dudley are an example. When Dave lost his job as vice president of a software company, they decided to sell their sprawling house in Washington state and live with their three children in a trailer.

"Just taking care of the house, with the mortgage and the insurance and the utility bill and all that, we were probably looking at around $3,000 a month," explained Dave. "Now we're looking around $300 for the same thing."

Jayco to increase RV production

“As a result of improving market conditions, lower dealer inventories, and retail incentives provided to dealers, Jayco needs to significantly increase our output in order to meet rising demand for our products,” said Bontrager.

Last spring, the company was producing approximately 75 RVs a day. Today, company officials estimated it to be about 130.

“We went from wondering how we were going to keep people busy these couple of months here, especially November and December, to a sudden turnaround of ‘how are were going to get them all built?’” said Jayco line supervisor Devon Miller. “It’s definitely a bit of good news.”

And Jayco isn’t the only manufacturer to see light at the end of the tunnel. In August, Dutchman RV in Goshen announced it was ready to hire 50 more workers.

Last week, Cozy Traveler in Elkhart said it would be hiring to keep up with demand for lightweight RVs.

Sales were up 13 percent industry-wide for the second month in a row compared to the same time last year. The industry expects a 27 percent jump in shipments for 2010. And while that’s positive news after a devastating year, Bontrager said he’s not ready to strike up the whole band just yet.

Sign of winter: RV Snowbirds arrive in Arizona

MESA, Ariz. -- The start of November marks the start of winter visitors arriving in the Valley.

Among the early arrivals, Mary Lange, who was found this week lounging by the pool at the Desarama RV Park in Mesa.

"Feels pretty darn good. It's about 86 degrees here, very nice," Lange said.

She comes to Arizona from Iowa the last week of October each year and stays until the last week of April.

A survey by the Arizona Association of RV Parks indicates many parks are seeing more business this year. The Towerpoint and Good Life RV Resorts in Mesa said winter reservations are up 15 percent. However, the Shangri-la Resort in Yuma said things are about the same as last year, and the Rincon Resort in Tucson expects a slight decline.

Richmond, Ky Sued for $12M After Foiled RV Park Plan

A lawsuit filed by Lakeview RV Park LLC against the city of Richmond, Ky., seeks a minimum of $12 million in damages for the city’s attempt to cancel a contract leasing Camp Catalpa to the company for use as an RV park.

The suit, filed Oct. 29 in Madison Circuit Court, names the city as a defendant along with city commissioners Robert Blythe, Bill Strong and Mike Brewer, former city commissioner Kay Cosby Jones and former city manager David Evans, according to the Richmond Register.

Each of the commissioners, including Jones, is being sued both individually and in their official capacities as elected officials.

California state park closures start this week

Cutbacks at state parks are the result of California's struggling finances. In Santa Cruz County, the reductions began earlier this fall as local park administrators anticipated the hits and began trying to save where they could - locking little-used restrooms and putting out fewer trash cans to reduce maintenance and patrol costs.

This week, though, the full menu of cuts took hold. Day-use parking lots were shut to weekday visitors at Palm State Beach and Manresa Uplands, and longer winter closures began at campgrounds at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and Manresa Uplands.

Nearly all parks are now offering fewer services and less upkeep.

Local administrators say they're trying to target the cuts to where the fewest people are affected.

"Visitors may not be able to go to their favorite campground in the mountains," said Karl Tallman, a parks superintendent who oversees Big Basin Redwoods and a handful of nearby parks. "But at least they'll have a campground to go to."

Sioux Falls Campground-stay rule likely to change soon

A rule that bars people from spending more than 30 days in a campground in Sioux Falls probably will be changed before the city has a chance to evict about six campers from a western Sioux Falls campground.

City councilors agreed Monday to expedite the issue after zoning officials told the owner of the Westwick Motel and Campground that he had until Nov. 23 to remove campers that are renting spots in his campground. The people in those vehicles live in them full time.

Councilors Bob Litz and Greg Jamison sponsored a measure that will allow the council to deal with the issue during a Nov. 16 public hearing. Their proposal would strike the 30-day limit from the city's ordinances, which until last month had not been enforced by the city.

Burbank, CA could restrict RV parking

After four years of protests from residents over their cumbersome presence on neighborhood streets, the city is poised to enact tough new restrictions that would bar any RV from parking on city streets without a permit.

The ban would allow for few exceptions, mostly for mechanical problems, and represent a major development in the drawn out tussle between residents and owners of recreational vehicles.

More than 250 complaints have poured into the Police Department regarding large vehicles parked for extended periods of time on public streets, blocking driveways and views. Complaints reached a crescendo when one man approached the City Council and threatened to rent an RV and park in it in front of each of their homes for a week to demonstrate the problem.

Fears Sioux Falls, SD Will Gain ‘Anti-RV’ Label

Sioux Falls, S.D., zoning officials are moving forward with the evictions of about a half-dozen people from a campground, even though city councilors are in the process of rewriting the campground ordinance.

That ordinance limits people from staying in a campground to no more than 30 days in any calendar year. But some city councilors say that time limit is too restrictive, especially considering that many campers and RVs that use campgrounds are equipped to handle cold weather, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

The issue came to light last Monday after David Fritz, the owner of the Westwick Motel and Campground, told a council committee that he received a letter from the city ordering the removal of several campers or RVs by Nov. 23. The 30-day limit is not typically enforced by the city, and officials wrote the letter even though they know the council is working on the issue.

A new ordinance is expected to be ready for review in January.

Winter Texans begin to arrive in New Braunfels

Using planes, trains and lots and lots of recreational vehicles, many so-called “Winter Texans” will call New Braunfels home for as long as several months.

Generally, Winter Texans tend to be retirement-age, empty nesters with the resources to own – or rent - homes in different parts of the United States.

Most have no desire to shovel snow, so travelling around Texas during the colder weather is a happier and warmer option.

For some, it may even make financial sense. They don’t have to deal with high energy or heating bills.

As many have the means to meander around the Lone Star State, it’s hard to quantify exactly how many Winter Texans stay in New Braunfels and the surrounding areas.

Campers Rescued When Flash Flood Inundates Campground

OZARK, Ark. -- A popular off-roading event has not been canceled after flood waters sparked a seven-hour search and rescue operation Thursday night into Friday morning.

The Mulberry River near Byrd's Outdoor Adventure in Franklin County rose more than 10 feet Thursday night, forcing the evacuation of more than 200 campers.

Over 20 people couldn't escape and found shelter on the roof of an outhouse, and a multi-agency rescue operation turned even more chaotic when three rescue personnel were swept into the river's strong currents.

"The river came up 8 feet within 20 minutes," said Bob Bell. He and 24 others -- including two children -- took shelter on the roof of an out house.

Motor home catches fire, explodes in Arizona

A 25-foot motor home caught fire and exploded Wednesday afternoon, sending a fireball into the sky that could be seen for miles.

According to Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dan Long, the driver of the motor home, Larry Jensen, 55, of Safford was headed to Willcox shortly after 2 p.m. when he thought one of his gasoline tanks emptied.

Jensen allegedly told DPS officers he pulled his 1985 Freeport motor home over to the side of the road near milepost 107 (about 13 miles south of Safford) to switch tanks and noticed a fuel line was leaking gas. At about the same time, he noticed a problem with one of his battery cables. Soon after, a spark from the cable ignited a pool of gas that had collected underneath the vehicle.

He attempted to drive away from the gas pool, but the fire followed the fuel and ignited the motor home. As Jensen attempted to drive away, he ended up spreading fire along the shoulder of the highway. Motorists traveling behind Jensen were able to smother the fires by scooping up sand with their hands and throwing it on the blazes. The quick-acting motorists likely prevented an even more serious situation as the wind was blowing and could easily have spread the fires, according to witnesses.

Near-permanent residency now allowed at RV resort

The Boulder City Council on Tuesday amended an ordinance that doesn’t allow lot owners at the Boulder Oaks RV resort to stay more than 180 consecutive days a year, now requiring them to leave for just one day.

Community members of the recreational vehicle resort attended the meeting to voice concerns about the ordinance that has been a concern for residents since it took effect in February 1987.

Attorney Michael Lemcool, speaking on behalf of Boulder Oaks members, said they shouldn’t be required to leave a lot they pay taxes on.

“Boulder Oaks RV resort is individually owned lots,” Lemcool said. “The city needs to change the zoning code.”

Other residents didn’t understand why the City Council wanted to enforce an ordinance that has been ignored for years.

“What’s the benefit or motive behind it?” resident Dave Bruce asked. “We are a tight-knit community.”

Prposed Alberta RV Resorts Opposed by Village Residents

Lacombe County, Alberta, will likely hold a second public hearing on new bylaws for RV resorts after significant changes were suggested.

The county has been working on a bylaw since last year designed to prevent the over-development of RV resorts.

The bylaw was considered necessary because several developers have proposed large RV developments on Sylvan and Gull Lakes that could see thousands of seasonal residents lured to the county.

The RV resorts have already proved controversial, with some rural landowners and summer village residents opposed to the scale of development proposed.

Louisiana Campgrounds thriving despite economy

Campgrounds and RV parks nationally have seen a mild drop in visitors because of the recession, but campgrounds in the Tri-parishes are largely doing well, say local park owners.

Part of the reason is most campgrounds in the area accommodate workers coming in who need a place to stay.

The 23 campsites at Linda's Campground and RV Park in Gibson are usually used by workers.

"Travelers we haven't had in God knows when," said owner Linda Aucoin, "but workers come from Mission, Texas, and New Jersey. We've had people who stayed from Rhode Island. There's no work in that area.

"Campgrounds in our area are not for recreation, they're not like Jellystone," said La Wanda Leger, owner of Hideaway Ponds, also in Gibson. "They're for working people, except for Lake End Park in Morgan City. It's a common problem in the campground industry, people wanting to live at the facility."

There’s good news for the Elkhart County economy.

According to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth, the RV industry has grown for the second month in a row.

Last month, more than 17,000 RV's were sold, which is a 13% increase over last September.

It's the first year-to-year gain in almost two years.

Trailers led the recovery with a 17.5% increase. Motorhome shipments actually fell, but analysts say they are stabilizing.

So far in 2009, overall shipments have been down from 2008 by nearly 43%.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Winter Campground Closures

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) — The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is winding down for the winter months.

Eight of the 10 campgrounds will close, as will all of the five horse camps. Visitor center hours will be reduced and secondary roads will close.

They call the concept a "personal warehouse". It is a term used in the storage industry to describe over-sized storage units that are for sale rather than for rent. Over the last several years, the concept caught on in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Texas, and in several northern states but they are new to Southern California. Founded by commercial real estate veterans, Big Easy Secure Warehouses was formed to meet the strong and growing demand for over-sized storage while providing incomparable value through ownership.

"There are over 1,000,000 RV's in California with countless more boats, personal watercraft, off-road vehicles, and collector cars yet there are few storage locations that provide fully enclosed units to store these expensive toys," said co-founder Chris Hughes. "Our concept goes beyond fully enclosed storage, offering exclusive space for the upper-end of the market that owns the more expensive coaches, high-performance boats, classic cars, and other valuable assets," Hughes added.

While the real value lies in the ability to own a unit, the Company wanted to create a project that provided every desirable amenity. The site includes an RV and boat wash bay, RV dump station and common area restrooms. The project's design includes extra-wide loading doors with a minimum 14 foot wide and 14 foot high clearance. Unit sizes will range from 480 to over 3,000 square feet, far more than what is offered at any other Southern California RV storage, boat and car storage project. The Company is also heavily investing in security. The facility will feature regular security patrol, gated electronic access, multiple motion-sensitive security cameras and each unit will include an entry alarm.

The Company has secured the required entitlements to construct the project in Temecula Valley. They chose the site because of its central location and easy freeway access from Interstates 15 and 215. Big Easy Secure Warehouses is now marketing the project to prospective buyers and has received strong interest in the ownership concept. The Company plans on offering phase I reservations in early 2010 to those people who have joined their interest list.

Kentucky's Pennyrile Campground to get $1.1 Million Improvements

DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. – The campground at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park near Dawson Springs will receive $1.1 million so horse camping sites can be added, First Lady Jane Beshear announced today.

The expansion of the campground is in the design phase and state park officials estimate between 10 and 15 full service sites for horse camping will be added, along with other campground improvements.

“These new sites will make a great addition for Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park and this region,” Mrs. Beshear said. “Horse enthusiasts will enjoy visiting and camping here because this is a beautiful area that’s perfect for horseback riding.”

The funding comes from a $60 million bond pool that was approved several years ago by the General Assembly for state park improvements.

Mrs. Beshear was joined by Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow and Parks Commissioner Gerry van der Meer.

The park currently has 68 improved campsites with water and electric hookups. The campground features utility hook ups, a dump station, and one central service building with showers, rest rooms and a laundry.

Park officials are currently making plans for the horse camping sites. The campground will serve as the trailhead to approximately 40 miles of equestrian trails within the adjacent Pennyrile State Forest.

Pennyrile Forest State Park has a lodge, cottages, restaurant, gift shop, 18-hole golf course, campground, boat rentals, swimming, mini-golf, hiking trails and picnic areas.

Two other state parks – Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and Taylorsville Lake State Park – have horse campsites available. The Department of Parks is also adding horse camping sites at Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill.

Service reductions, closures for CA Inland Empire state parks

Inland Empire hikers, bird enthusiasts, campers and anglers will be disappointed to learn that five popular state parks in the Southern California region will experience considerable service reductions and even weekday closures beginning Sunday.

The reductions are part of a statewide effort to save money and prevent the total closure of perhaps more than 100 parks. The Inland Empire district announced its reductions Monday.

Park-goers in other California regions can expect similar announcements. And it remains unclear what will happen at the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2010.

My pal Darby and I love to go where the wild things are. In his case, that's because he qualifies as one of them.

Darby is a happy-go-lucky wheaten terrier with a penchant for travel. The mere whisper of the words "Let's go" unleashes boundless enthusiasm in him. We make great traveling companions because I also get pretty hyped when I hear those words, although I try not to leap around and whine.

Last month the great outdoors called, and we answered with a resounding yes and a hearty woof. Both of us love luxury hotels, but we don't mind roughing it now and then.

Luckily, conditions are improving for dogs that camp or go RVing with their families. It makes economic sense: Statistics show that 50% to 75% of the nation's RVers travel with a pet, enticing some private park owners to become more sensitive to the needs of dog owners.

Still, most RV parks and campgrounds have a long way to go.

"While over 90% of the RV parks and campgrounds listed on Camp-California.com accept dogs, most have limited amenities," said Debbie Sipe, who represents the California Assn. of RV Parks & Campgrounds. "However, a handful of parks are investing in unique pet activities."

Oregon Agency Holds Fate of Park Model Resort

Millions of dollars invested in the Hyatt Lake Resort in southern Oregon are on the line as park model cabin owners fear the fallout from a recent ruling by a Jackson County hearings officer.

At the same time, the owner of the resort, Bob McNeely, filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 30 for Nor’wester Industries Inc. of Washington, the company that built the cabins, which McNeely describes as recreational vehicles, according to the Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore.

On Oct. 13, McNeely filed an appeal with the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) over the Jackson County hearings officer’s decision that finds the county planning department erred when it allowed 22 units on the property in the first place.

Owners of the cabins, who have agreements to rent them out for $150 or more a night, now are worried about their $150,000 to $200,000 investment, and the fear has spread to nearby Campers Cove, where another 25 units have been installed. Most of the owners live in Jackson County.
