Beaches to Rivers of Santa Rosa, Florida Welcomes Winter Visitors

SANTA ROSA, Fla., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- When temperatures begin to
drop in the north, many retirees and other travelers start looking south to
get away from snow, ice, bitter cold and gray days.

The bright, sunny skies and temperate climate in the Beaches to Rivers
of Santa Rosa offers travelers the perfect place to nest.

"We love our Snowbirds," said Kate Wilkes, director of the Santa Rosa
County Tourist Development Council. "And they love our southern hospitality
and convenience of our location."

Santa Rosa County is located in the Florida panhandle between Pensacola
and Fort Walton Beach.

The sugar-white beaches and emerald waters at Navarre Beach have
attracted winter travelers for decades.

Budget-minded travelers will find the lowest rates of the year with
monthly rates starting at $1,000 per month, including utilities. Area RV
parks and campgrounds are also a popular draw for winter travelers.

Rental managers organize activities, such as potluck dinners, cards and
games and group outings for winter visitors. Golf is also a popular draw
with a diverse selection of golf courses a short drive away.

Snowbirds also like the convenience of Navarre Beach's 3.5-mile paved
biking and walking trail located just outside their door.

Many take day trips to area attractions such as the Mississippi
casinos, the National Museum of Naval Aviation and The Zoo of Northwest
Florida.

"Snowbirds are never bored while they are here," Wilkes said. "Most of
them stay on the go."

Ford Beefs up Chassis for RVs

The Blue Oval doesn't sell recreational vehicles under its own name, but Ford is the leading manufacturer of motor home chassis in the United States. On Tuesday, Ford hopes to widen its lead by unveiling its biggest, most-capable motor home chassis at the annual RV show in Louisville, Ky.

The new F53 Super Duty Class A chassis, in production in Detroit, is all about weight. There are six models in the lineup. The biggest has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds.

That refers to the amount of weight that can be added to the chassis, and titanic numbers like this are just what RV companies are looking for today, according to Rob Stevens, chief engineer for Ford's commercial truck division.

"It's all about knowing our customers," he said.

Winnebago Leads U.S. RV Sales Drop

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Winnebago Industries Inc., Thor Industries Inc. and other U.S. recreational-vehicle makers will probably say shipments fell in 2007 for the first time in six years, a sign the U.S. economy may be headed for a recession.

For the past three decades, deliveries of motor homes and travel trailers have dropped before each decline in the U.S. economy, giving the $15 billion industry a reputation as a bellwether. As the U.S. housing slump worsens, gasoline prices rise and consumer confidence wanes, RV sales are forecast to slide this year and next.

Upscale RV Park Planned

The Grand Rapids Press - MLive.com - Grand Rapids,MI,USA
Architect Dennis Dryer sees a proposed 150-site recreational vehicle park on 75 acres east of U.S. 31 as a project Grand Haven Township can live with, even if it means revising the master plan.

"This is a win-win for everyone" Dryer said.

The park would be for large motor homes or fifth-wheel recreational trailers that serve as vacation homes during the summer months.

Dryer said the park would have community areas, including a clubhouse, pool, a large room for rent, tennis courts, decks and gazebos.

There also would be room left for a 30-acre, nine-hole executive golf course, he said.

The park would be similar to those often found in Florida and other vacation areas, Dryer said.

The closest similar parks are in Traverse City and Martin, in Allegan County.

Ford finding success in RVs

Although Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) has not really been lighting up the sales board in recent quarters, CEO Alan Mulally seems to be on track to get the automotive giant profitable sometime in 2009. He may not have to worry about one specialized area within the Detroit auto giant, however. Can you guess which division that may be?

Try recreational vehicles. Ford's market share has increased in the motor home segment this year while its automotive market share has shrunk in several popular consumer vehicle segments.

More Canadians swapping their homes for RVs

Glen and Cathy Cherry are calling Calgary home -- at least for now. That's because this winter, home will be Arizona. Or California. Or Texas. Or maybe all three.

A few years ago, the 50-something couple walked away from lives focused on earning a living, sold their Saskatchewan home (but kept the family cottage) and hit the open road in an eight-metre Jayco Eagle fifth-wheel trailer.

"It was time to put that stage of our lives behind us and do what's good for the soul," says Glen. "We take it a day at a time . . . we operate more on spirit now than anything else."

The great Outdoors are Awaiting You at Florida's Parks and Campgroungs

The sun is shining. The sky is blue. Well, what are you going to do? Get out there in the fresh air, of course. Staying inside is unacceptable.

Like birding? We got birds. Born to swim? We got places to get wet. Do you yearn to camp under the stars? Yep, we got that one covered too. You bring the marshmallows.

Marion County is blessed with one national forest, two state parks and the lion's share of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, a 110-mile green corridor across Florida that was once slated to be the Cross Florida Barge Canal and is now a world-class wonder.

Toss in state, county and city officials, with support from voters, continuing to enhance our quality of life with more outdoor recreation opportunities. Easy to understand folks who say they moved here for the chance to bike, walk, hike, camp, bird watch, canoe and more - all within spitting distance of their backyard.

RV parks threatened by soaring land prices

Vancouver Sun - British Columbia, Canada
VANCOUVER - B.C. is losing thousands of campsites for recreational vehicles as owners sell off prime recreation properties to take advantage of spiralling land values.

That's the word from Chris Bower, general manager of Nk'Mip Campground and RV Park, Osoyoos and president of the B.C. Lodging and Campgrounds Association [BCLCA], who said in an interview Thursday that 74 parks representing 4,687 campsites have closed or changed use in the past three years.

"We've lost 10 per cent," said Bower.

"As an example, in Osoyoos we used to have 1,200 campsites. Now we've got 640. And this is all over B.C., especially in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan."

Campground Shutdowns Spur Outcry

It was the cause of great disappointment when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced some time back that it was closing during the fall and winter months many of the campgrounds at the lakes it operates.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but when there’s a nip in the air, that’s precisely the time of year when camping is at its prime for many. No bugs (specifically, no ticks or chiggers), spiders or snakes. No crowds. On the lakes, few boats. Lots of quiet, enough of it that a squirrel’s every move can be heard from about as far away as one can see him. And building a campfire is a welcomed and essential part of the evening activities.

Over the years, state and federally owned campgrounds have been left open. The toilets and hot showers were turned off. There was no electricity. And fees were paid on the honor system.

But the campground itself was unlocked and available — and used.

The anger over losing the sites, for once, didn’t fall on deaf ears. The blessed public contacted the Corps and complained, and they contacted U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., who put additional heat on the Corps.

Storms Take Toll on Olympic National Park Campgrounds

Peninsula Daily - Port Angeles,WA,USA
OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK - The Heart O' The Hills campground will be closed for about a month while work continues to clear "quite a bit" of blown down trees and other debris from last week's storm, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokesperson.

The roads into the Hoh and Ozette areas are clear of downed trees and the road into the Sol Duc area is clear of trees and open as weather conditions allow, Maynes said.

The Olympic Hot Springs Road into the Elwha area of the park has re-opened and the transmission line from the Elwha Dam has been repaired, but the one to the Glines Canyon Dam still needs to be fixed, she said.

No cost estimates for the damage are available yet, Maynes said.

The Nov. 12 storm - which included 123 mph winds at Glines Canyon Dam - closed several roads in 922,000-acre Olympic National Park, including the Hoh, Sol Duc, Ozette, Olympic Hot Springs, Hurricane Ridge plus the campgrounds accessed by those roads.

City Committee to Study RV Parking Rules

The Grand Rapids Press - MLive.com - Grand Rapids,MI,USA
COOPERSVILLE -- John Jones worried when he learned the Planning Commission had discussed banning recreational vehicle storage from front yards.

The 36-year resident just built a concrete pad in his front yard to store his RV when he's not using it every other week during good weather. He said storage rental costs $1,600 for a winter, or up to $70 a month.

"I can understand when weeds are growing around a recreational vehicle, or a tire is flat and the whole thing is slanted," he said. "That's kind of tacky."

But he told commission members that he hopes not everyone will be required to move RVs out of sight.

Commission members said they don't want their rules to be so restrictive that some residents could not own an RV. But they said they also sympathize with those who do not want the city looking like an RV park.

On the Road Again

Moving from a big house to a smaller one isn't the only way to downsize. Luxurious recreational vehicles, stocked with every possible modern convenience from Jacuzzis to wi-fi, are becoming full-time residences for a growing number of Americans. Some are retirees looking for a new adventure, others have jobs that keep them on the road and see RV living as a way to have a home life, and a few just crave the freedom of being on the go now that cell phones and the Internet allow people to work from almost anywhere.

"This is the ideal American subculture; it's the way everyone would like it to be," says Howard Payne, a real estate lawyer who, along with his wife Linda, traded a five-bedroom house in Louisville, Ky., for a 400-sq.-ft. (37 sq m) motor home in August 2005.

RVers Are Blocked From Voting

When your home is the open road, where do you register to vote?

A total of 286 people who live full-time in their recreational vehicles were dropped from the voter rolls in one Tennessee county over the past two years because they did not have a genuine home address, only a mailbox. That has left them unable to vote in national or local elections.

What happened in Tennessee may be an extreme case, but an Associated Press review of laws and policies across the nation found that election officials sometimes make it difficult for the nation's thousands of devoted RVers to cast a ballot.

Georga wants your input on State Park plans

Macon Telegraph - Macon,GA,USA
PERRY GA -- The state has come up with three possible plans for the development of Flat Creek State Park.

Citizens are asked for their input on which plan they like the best. They can also pick a combination of features among the three, and the state will use that information to come up with a final plan.

By today the plans are expected to be posted on the State Parks and Historic Parks Web site, www.gastateparks.org. Click on the "Public Notices" link near the bottom. The response should be mailed or faxed by Thursday.

All three plans have several features in common. One of the biggest is a 106-acre fishing lake that is already built, but isn't expected to open until next summer at the earliest.

Once public feedback is received, the architects will develop a final plan to be presented at a public meeting on Nov. 29.

Although not all features are included in all of the plans, other suggestions include a public observation tower, an archery range, mini cabins with kitchen and dining areas, camping areas, paddle boats, RV hookups and a picnic area.

The park is located between Interstate 75 and U.S. 41 just south of Perry.

CAFE Standards: The Debate Continues over RV Tow Vehicles

Congress is currently discussing an energy bill that will have significant impact on motor vehicle fuel economy requirements (mpg) and a consequent impact on RV tow vehicles. One of the key components of that bill is an increase in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which is the way the federal government regulates how many miles per gallon the car/truck companies have to get from their fleet of cars and light-trucks.

While most everyone now agrees that CAFE standards need to be increased, the Senate and House have not agreed on any specific language. In fact, the House is significantly divided. Speaker Pelosi wants to adopt the Senate passed H.R. 6 which would require 35 mpg by model year 2020 and would not maintain the separate fuel standards for cars and trucks. But there is significant support for a bi-partisan bill (H.R. 2927) sponsored by Representatives Baron Hill (R-IN) and Lee Terry (D-NE) which would require cars to get 35 mpg and light trucks 32 mpg by model year 2022. The Hill-Terry bill is supported by RVIA, RVDA, American Recreation Coalition (ARC) and many more associations and coalitions, including the automobile industry.

The RV industry has been asking for language in the bill, or at least the Committee report, that requires the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take "towing capability" into consideration when they develop future CAFE standards. Additionally, the industry feels that it is very important to maintain the distinction between cars and light trucks. This distinction will help allow car manufacturers to produce a greater number of tow vehicles.

Trade magazine gives Mayberry Campground rave reviews

Mount Airy News - Mount Airy, NC, USA
The area's newest tourist destination, Mayberry Campground, is getting off to a good start, based on initial reviews in a trade publication.

Mount Airy officials have agreed to annex the site so that the campground, at the southeast corner of Interstate 74 and U.S. 601 South, can have access to water and sewer utilities. In addition to a large parking area for RV's, the campground will include a general store, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a swimming pool with a Jucuzzi, wireless Internet and cable television.

Those attributes are among the reasons that the campground received a perfect 10 score in RV Park Reviews. Benny L. East is developing the site. There are 14 RV sites and more are planned. Rates are $25 per night for RV's and $15 for tent campers.

"There's just something about it. You get out there and find a few flakes of gold and it gets pretty exciting."

Bob Truppa tells of friends who've found nuggets they've sold for $10,000. And he notes that the Bradshaw Mountains, the heart of Arizona's gold country, are about 40 miles long and nearly 25 miles wide.

"That's a lot of real estate. Gold is out there; it's not all gone," he says.
