Green highways -- in an RV

The 1994 Safari Trek motor home parked in the green-living southeast Portland neighborhood draws curious looks.

Which is just what Ty Adams wants.

Curiosity breeds questions. Questions give Adams the chance to preach his passion -- for alternative fuels and energy independence, for conservation of natural resources and for creative, sustainable design and construction practices.

An outdoors enthusiast who never dreamed he'd become an RVer, Adams learned about motorhomes while working for a Coburg RV manufacturer -- then launched into his own campaign to bring environmental practices to the world of motorhoming.

His unlikely pulpit is the 27-foot-long "SolTrekker," a paragon of sustainability in an eye-catching custom paint job of orange, brown and white, with yellow sun rays reaching from the wheel hubs.

It's the blood and guts of the motor home that so audaciously flip the RV stereotype.

The SolTrekker runs on biodiesel. Solar panels heat its water and power its electricity. Special gutters channel rain through filters and into holding barrels to use for cooking and cleaning.

The composting toilet doesn't need to be pumped out.

RV Industry is Down, But Has Been Worse

Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly - Fort Wayne,IN,USA
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Elkhart County unemployment spiked this year as recreational-vehicle manufacturers and suppliers closed and laid off workers.

An economic downturn affecting what is known as “the RV capital of the world” is not new. And according to indicators, so far, it’s not as bad as the downturn Elkhart weathered 30 years ago.

Wholesale RV shipments turned lower over the last year and a half as gas prices skyrocketed and the credit crisis took hold. But shipments this year are expected to remain higher than 2001, the most recent low point.

Al Hesselbart, historian at the RV-MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, said the downturn clearly is not as bad as one that occurred in the late 1970s.

“In the late ’70s, early ’80s unemployment was in the 20- to 21-percent range throughout Elkhart industry,” Hesselbart said. “When you need food stamps to go to the grocery store it’s bad. But everyone on the block is not in that situation.”

Nonseasonably adjusted unemployment rates in August and September of this year were more than double 2007 figures. The October unemployment rate reached 10.7 percent, the highest in the state, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

RV shipments dropped 9.5 percent in 2007 from the previous year, ending a five-year streak of increases. Shipments are expected to be 266,800 this year, which would be the lowest amount since 2001, when 256,800 units shipped and the industry was experiencing another downturn.

Economic-development agencies in Elkhart County want to recruit other industry clusters to the area so it is not so dependent on manufacturing, which is about 50 percent of the county’s economy. A regional marketing group is in the works to sell Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, as well as three neighboring counties in southern Michigan to companies looking to move or expand.

The RV industry, which attracts more than its share of publicity, amounts to only 8 percent of Elkhart County’s manufacturing base. As they work to diversify the economy, county officials still want to ensure the RV industry does not die.

KOA Campground Hosted Thanksgiving Dinner

Santa Cruz Sentinel - Santa Cruz,CA,USA
It wasn't the first time the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA campground hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for its guests. But it was one of the biggest.

Montana Hutton, who's been in charge of the kitchen for the past three years, prepared 14 turkeys -- twice as many as usual -- when he saw how many people had made campground reservations.

Between 350 and 400 people are staying at the local KOA, which has filled its RV spaces but has cabins available.

Winnebago Receives 13th RVDA Quality Award

Forest City, Iowa – Winnebago Industries Inc. received notification that the company’s Itasca and Winnebago brands have earned the Quality Circle Award from RVDA.

"We are extremely proud to receive the Quality Circle Award again this year," said Winnebago Industries' Chairman, CEO and President Bob Olson. "We are also very proud that Winnebago Industries has received the Quality Circle Award every year since 1995, an accomplishment no other motor home or travel trailer manufacturer in the industry has been able to attain."

The DSI survey, which determines the Quality Circle Award winners, rates manufacturers' performance in eight core areas: sales support, sales territory, vehicle design, vehicle reliability/quality, competitive price/value, parts support, dealership warranty support and overall dealer communications.

The Winnebago and Itasca brands were both recognized for scoring 80 percent or above in overall dealer satisfaction as measured in the Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey conducted by RVDA.

RV and Camping Life in Texas

The recent roller coaster ride in fuel costs has failed to deter recreational vehicle enthusiasts from enjoying private campgrounds and RV resorts in Texas, according to a recent online survey by the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO).

The survey, conducted in October, found that 82 percent of RV enthusiasts planned to use their RVs this fall at least as much as they did last year at this time.

“Winter reservations for campgrounds and RV resorts in Texas are as strong as they’ve ever been,” said Brian Schaeffer, TACO’s executive director.

Some parks are already booked up for the winter. “We stopped taking reservations two months ago,” said Mac McLaughlin, co-owner of the 129-site Hatch RV Park in Corpus Christi, adding that his park continues to see large numbers of Canadians. “We had four times as many Canadians last year as the year before,” he said.

McLaughlin said about 20 percent of his winter visitors arrive just after Thanksgiving, although he’s already had “about eight or nine” show up at his park unexpectedly. He said the remaining 80 percent of his winter visitors will arrive at his park just after Christmas. “A lot of Winter Texans like to spend Christmas at home,” he said.

Not every park is seeing strong business, however. Doug Shearer, owner of the 95-site Parkview Riverside RV Park in Rio Frio, said his winter bookings are down slightly from last year. “We were off in October and our advance reservations for November and December are down. But you can’t go by that. I had a surprise guest show up today without a reservation and he wants to spend the winter here.” Shearer added that his winter business has generally increased 10 or 20 percent each year since he opened the park in March of 2001.

Coachmen RV Sale Price Estimated $42M

MIDDLEBURY – Rival RV manufacturer Forest River is offering $42 million in cash for Coachmen Industries’ recreational vehicle group.

The purchase price was included in Coachmen’s paperwork filed with the Security and Exchange Commission Monday.

Coachmen announced the purchase offer last week. The offer will have to be approved by the company’s shareholders. A shareholders meeting will be scheduled for mid- to late December.

Coachmen has been hit hard by the downturn in consumer spending. The combination of high fuel prices early this year and the tightening of the consumer credit market has pushed its sales dramatically downward.

The company’s net sales for the third quarter were $74.8 million, compared to $123.8 million in the same quarter in 2007. Coachmen lost $16.1 million in the quarter despite a $8.4 million drop in operating expenses. The company had a net loss of $24.9 million in the third quarter of 2007.

Judge Rules Park Model RVs Subject to Real Estate Taxes

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Pittsburgh,PA,USA
An Armstrong County, PA judge has ruled that three trailers should be subject to real estate taxes, upholding a decision by the county's board of assessment appeals.

The three trailers are park-style RVs used by families for weekend or summer getaways. The families filed a petition with the Court of Common Pleas for an appeal of the board's determination.

Judge Kenneth Valasek stated in his opinions that, because the owners have added porches, steps, landscaping and outdoor lighting, the mobile homes are more of a house than a recreational vehicle. He issued three similar opinions on the appeals.

Top 5 Coolest New Green Campers

The RV industry is on the verge of a major shift towards downsizing. Not many people these days want to drive a 40-foot behemoth with lurid graphics.

There will always be a market for big 'diesel-pusher' coaches that average less than ten miles per gallon. But what do you buy if you can't face piloting a giant 'Class A' motorhome?

Squob has put together some greener options for recreational vehicle fans who value style as well as utility. This selection has a decidedly European slant, because RVs from the other side of the Atlantic tend to be much kinder to the environment. Gas is much more expensive in Europe, and the locals tend to take shorter vacations.

Fewer Snowbirds may come to Arizona

Tucson Citizen - Tucson,AZ,USA
PHOENIX - Winter visitors can escape the cold weather back home but they can't run from a downtrodden economy.

Recreational vehicle park operators in the Phoenix area worry that some snowbirds will stay home this winter instead of packing up and heading west.

Several parks report that reservations are down and cancellations are up.

Wendell Johnson, general manager of Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort in Casa Grande, said the park typically gets reservations for about 1,500 spaces from October through December.

"Business is down about 5 percent so far compared with the same period last year," Johnson said.

The most recent estimate of the economic impact that snowbirds have is from five years ago, when Arizona State University surveyed 300,000 winter visitors and found that they spent about $1 billion on food, entertainment, lodging and other goods and services during their time in Arizona.

Tailgate Party is a Family Affair

Like most great tailgates, the Leitzell family home game gatherings have humble roots.

“I started in 1968 in the trunk of my car with one other couple,” said Don Leitzell, of Beech Creek.

Then he moved the party to the back of a pickup truck, and when he had 150 people at his tailgate one Saturday, including actor William Baldwin, “then we knew we had made it,” Leitzell recalled on Saturday. “I bought an old RV and it took off from there.”

Beaudry RV files Bankruptcy after $26 Million Debt Pay-Down

Inside Tucson Business - Tucson,AZ,USA
Through eight separate filings Nov. 18 and 19 the current Beaudry companies filed for Chapter 11 protection and reorganization. The companies include Beaudry RV in Tucson and Chandler, Beaudry RV Resort, Berry Good Cars used cars and Beaudry Chevrolet Chrysler Jeep & Dodge in Benson. Four real estate holding companies were included in the filings.

Chief Executive Thomas P. Sylvester said the bankruptcy filings were made to primarily to restructure financing related to real estate debt. While the downturn in sales was a factor, the company was most interested in protecting assets from the demands of lenders holding secured debt on the buildings and real estate.

“We need to restructure our debt, in our opinion, to a very unreasonable group of mortgage creditors in a very down banking market,” Sylvester said.

In a statement, the company said it has reduced its debt to $13.3 million from $42 million in 2006.

“We’ve paid them down — just in the last four or five months — $26 million,” Sylvester said. “That’s a lot of money in anybody’s world. But they want it paid off. I guess they didn’t get any of the bailout money.”

Country Coach owes nearly $100,000 for promotional material

A small Eugene, Oregon, business that makes promotional and marketing materials has sued Country Coach, alleging the RV maker hasn’t paid for nearly $100,000 worth of shirts, caps, windbreakers and other accessories emblazoned with the Country Coach logo.

Kim O’Brien, president of TNT, said in an interview that her company has done business with Country Coach for about five years, and has had a good relationship with the RV maker. Country Coach orders shirts, pins and caps with the company logo to sell at rallies and other events, she said.

“We enjoy working with Country Coach,” she said. “They have not been slow pays before. It does sadden us it had to come to this.”

But TNT is a small, family-owned business, and couldn’t afford to not get paid, she said. Founded in 1997, TNT has just six employees, including O’Brien.

It's Mostly Diesel for Workhorse at RV Trade Show

It will be a mostly diesel show for Workhorse as it will, first of all, introduce its W20D and W22D front engine diesel chassis for the first time. With 20,500 and 22,000 lb. GVWRs, they are the same as Workhorse’s popular gas W20 and W22 models, including the six-speed Allison, only powered by Navistar’s MaxxForce™ 7 diesel engine (230 hp, 620 lb.-ft torque).

The 33-foot Itasca Sunstar by Winnebago Booth and the all-new 31-foot, seven-inch Four Winds Serrano will be two Class A models at the show built on the W20D.

Workhorse will also display its W16D chassis, introduced in September. It’s another front-engine diesel powered by a MaxxForce™ 5 engine (200 hp, 440 lb.-ft. torque) and used by the new Avanti motor home from Damon.

Also, Navistar is displaying its “Super C” chassis for RVs, the DuraStar, in the Workhorse booth. With a 25,500 lb. GVWR and a 33,000 lb. GCWR, it is a heavy-duty diesel in every sense of the word (MaxxForce DT engine, 300 hp, 660 lb.-ft. torque).

But gas is still in the equation with the 2009 Chevy Workhorse Class C chassis. The big news here is that the 2009 model has boosted its GCWR from 17,600 lbs. to 20,000 lbs., and GVWR from 14,050 lbs. to 14,200 lbs., leaving it with 5,800 lbs. of safe towing capacity among other things.

Snowbird Season is Brighter for Casa Grande AZ

Casa Grande Valley Newspapers - Casa Grande,AZ,USA
Lower fuel prices may be bringing many back, but seniors likely will be spending less after they arrive The winter visitor outlook for the Casa Grande Valley was pretty bleak a couple of months ago as a recessionary economy and sky-high gas prices had people questioning the wisdom of a winter stay in Arizona.

But the outlook is much brighter now, thanks in large part to the continuing tumble in fuel prices. Now the question isn't so much "will they come?" but "how much will they spend?"

Getting here is no longer the problem. Gas prices are lower than they were this time last year, and much lower (more than a dollar a gallon) than when winter visitors went home this spring.

"The RV market is a little soft due to the economy, but most snowbirds aren't affected drastically by such downturns," said Dan Thompson, president of the Arizona Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. "We have experienced approximately a 5 to 10 percent softening. Most don't stay as long and don't move around as much, but come nonetheless.

"Reservations were slow in coming in, but have been steady and are starting to catch up to normal.

Campground Cans Christmas Basket Cheer

KTVZ - Bend,OR,USA
Since 1989, Thornton has gathered thousands and thousands of soft drink cans from a local campground to buy Christmas presents for kids and families.

"My husband and I started doing it in 1989," said Thornton. "And we just started sorting cans and bottles through Thousand Trails through what the members were tossing."

But this year, she was told by the campground that she wouldn't be able to collect the cans because of tax reasons.

"What it comes down to is that we were acquired by another company other than Thousand Trails, that is not set up to go ahead and give to charitable donations," said Cecilia Lee, manager of the campground.

This comes just a year after the Christmas basket operation gave a record-breaking total last season - almost $5,000 in gifts and food -- something that Marlene prays can continue to happen, for the sake of the recipients.

"I called five of them this morning to ask if they'd prefer a turkey, a whole chicken or a ham," Thornton said, tearfully added, "And they all said, 'We'd be grateful for anything that we get.'"

If you're interested in helping Marlene by donating cans, food, or clothing you can do so by calling her at (541) 593-5549.

Despite Slow Economy Snowbirds Still Flocking to Yuma

Despite the deepening recession, warmth-seeking winter visitors still seem to be making their annual trek to the Yuma area for the winter.

According to Ken Rosevear, the executive director of the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce, reservations at the county's 112 recreational vehicle park are about the same as they were last year.

"Some parks have even reported an increase over the previous year, a few as much as 3 percent," Rosevear said. "We are cautiously optimistic, despite the economy."

The biggest reason they are coming, Rosevear believes, is due to lower gas prices, which peaked around $4 a gallon in July and are now hovering in the $2 range.

"Some of the winter visitors who were apprehensive about coming because of the high gas prices may do so now," Rosevear said.

RV Financing Available for Creditworthy Customers

RESTON, Va., Nov 19, 2008 -- In response to widespread media reports on how the credit crunch is adversely impacting American industry and the national economy, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) is reporting that financing remains readily available for well-qualified borrowers looking to purchase the recreation vehicle (RV) of their dreams.

"For the great majority of people who pay their bills on time and honor their loan commitments, there is money in the market to finance an RV according to our finance company members," said RVIA President Richard Coon. "The misconception that creditworthy customers can't finance an RV is simply not true."

Lyle Schaap of Schaap's RV Traveland, an RV dealership in Sioux Falls, S.D. echoed Coon's comments. "We do not have any difficulty securing financing for our customers as long as they have an adequate down payment and a good credit score," he said.

RV dealer Anthony Staab, sales manager at Rich and Sons Camper Sales, Inc., in Grand Island, Neb., also agreed saying that his dealership "still has avenues for financing."

"Snow birds across the United States know that there is no better place to be in the winter in an RV than Florida," said Chris Rhodes, Tropical Palms general manager. "We want our northern guests to enjoy our blue skies, swaying palm trees and balmy breezes at special value pricing. Plus, the longer they stay, the more affordable it gets!"

For example, a three-month stay in a standard back-in site would save $590 over regular pricing. "We have the most competitive rates in Central Florida for long-term visits," said Rhodes.

Alton Telegraph - Alton,IL,USA
Businessman Mike Storey won positive recommendations Tuesday from the Plan Commission that he needs to sublet trailer lots to people living in recreational vehicles while temporarily working at the WRB Refining Wood River Refinery.

Storey is planning to lease the southernmost 125 lots of Enchanted Village mobile home park, at Storey Lane and Stanley Road, from owner Affordable Residential Community (ARC). In turn, he wants to rent out the lots by the month to people with RVs and campers who come to the area to work on the expansion of the Wood River Refinery in Roxana.

Beaudry RV Files for Bankruptcy Reorganization

Beaudry RV Co. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in what the company says is mainly a bid to restructure its debt.

Company CEO Thomas Sylvester said that daily operations at the two RV Centers in Tucson and Chandler and at Beaudry RV Resort will continue. The company has sold off its local auto dealerships in recent years.
Although the current downturn in the recreational vehicle industry is a factor, the filing for reorganization "was undertaken primarily to restructure financing for real-estate related debt," Sylvester said in a prepared statement.

The filing was necessary, Sylvester said, to protect operations from the demands of lenders holding the secured debt on real estate and buildings that house Beaudry's operations. The banking crisis resulted in an impasse with these lenders, the company said.

RVer Dies in Motorhome Crash

A San Diego man was killed and a woman was critically injured Monday afternoon when their motor home crashed into another vehicle and then rolled onto its side.

The motor home, towing a car, was northbound on Highway 74 just north of Pitahaya Street about 4:30 p.m. when investigators say its brakes may have failed, Riverside County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Herlinda Valenzuela said.

“At some point, the motor home hit the SUV and pushes it, disengages, hit the tree and completely flipped,” she said.

Indio resident Diana Hernandez, was driving the Ford Explorer and managed to see the motor home's driver.

“He looked so scared,” she said of the driver, who was 86 years old. “He hit us so hard, I couldn't control my car.”

Lazy Days RV Center Misses $8.1-million Loan Payment

Tampabay.com - St. Petersburg,FL,USA
The downturn crippling the auto industry has come home to the sprawling Lazydays RV SuperCenter in Seffner, the world's largest single-site RV dealer.

Lazy Days RV Center Inc., the company's parent, missed a long-term debt payment of $8.1-million due Monday and is trying to renegotiate terms with holders. Missing the interest payment triggered a 30-day grace period before the company is considered in default.

Lazydays said modifying debt terms is the best way to ensure the company's viability "through what is anticipated to be a protracted downturn in the market for recreation vehicles.''

Coachmen’s M-Series Travel Trailer Gives New Meaning to Ultralight

Coachmen RV Group has made towing easier than ever with its new M-Series travel trailer that takes ultralights to a new level of utility for any RV buyer, even the first-time buyer. The M-Series, which started to ship this month, includes three floorplans that start around 3,000 pounds base weight, and two floorplans starting under 5,000 pounds.

That means these travel trailers only need the smaller SUV, minivan, crossover vehicle, or light duty pickup to tow them (check you auto owners manual for verification). This eliminates the expenses associated with a larger, less-fuel-efficient tow vehicle and makes it easy to just hitch up and go when you want to.

Motorhome maker Foretravel takes on the horse trailer

Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel - Nacogdoches,TX,USA
Foretravel has been in the motorhome business for many years, but now they have taken on a project that is a horse of a different color.

Horse trailers that were once aluminum frames are being converted by Foretravel to add living space for the owners, while still leaving space for transporting horses.

"Most of them are built for transporting three or four horses with 14 to 15 feet of living space," Terry Nabours, Foretravel director of marketing, said. "The inside looks just like a Foretravel motorhome."

The new endeavor began as an idea a few years ago from Richard Spring, Foretravel manager of customer service, but has only been a serious project for the last six months.

"It gives the people another avenue for a higher quality living area for anyone who wants to haul a horse," Spring said, "whether it be the rodeo people or the people who show horses."

Economy may hinder Arizona snowbirds' spending

Arizona Republic - Phoenix,AZ,USA
Winter visitors are returning slowly, not flocking to the Valley as they traditionally have in stronger economies.

Several RV parks report that reservations are down and cancellations are up, although park managers warn it's too early to say for sure how the season will shake out.

"We're certainly going to see a little softer season than we have in the past," said Wendell Johnson, general manager of Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort in Casa Grande.

The 1,862-space age-restricted park typically gets reservations for about 1,500 spaces from October through December. Business is down about 5 percent so far compared with the same period last year, Johnson said.

Mesa has the largest number of RV parks in the Valley. Robert Brinton, president of the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau, said it remained unclear whether winter visitors would arrive later or leave earlier because of the troubled economy. Also up in the air was how much they would spend in the Valley.

Couple Justifies Cost of RV Travels

5th-Wheel Wanderings Blog
We have been asked how (or why) we can travel with fuel prices so high and the economy in such a state. One part of the answer is we aren't getting any younger and how do we know it won't be worse next year or the year after that?

But the expense of our type of travel isn't much. From March 24 to November 4, we drove 10,700 miles and only about 7,000 miles were driven towing our trailer. Many people drive at least 15,000 miles a year just going to and from work and driving around town. We went from Colorado to New Mexico, then Arizona, then California, on to Oregon, back down to California, then Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, before returning to Colorado.

Inauguration Attracts Cold Weather Campers

Washington Post Staff Writer
With hotel rooms booking up fast, visitors who want to witness President-elect Barack Obama's historic inauguration are snapping up spots at campgrounds in Washington's suburbs and as far away as West Virginia, reserving unheated cabins, renting RVs and inquiring whether it would be feasible to camp in a tent.

"They said, 'How cold's it going to be?' " said Everett Lovell, who owns the Aquia Pines Camp Resort in Stafford County, which has five cabins but only two that can be used in winter. "We were just inundated with calls about our cabins. One lady wanted to come in a pop-up," an uninsulated trailer that unfolds into a primitive camper.

The Fairfax County Park Authority, which has only one year-round camping area, received so many inquiries that officials considered opening Burke Lake Park, just for the month of January, when the temperature typically dips into the 20s at night around inauguration time. For now, they have decided to wait and see whether all 136 spots fill up at Lake Fairfax, spokeswoman Judith Pedersen said. "This is uncharted territory for us."

Escapees RV Club Members Help Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International will celebrate this month the completion of its 300,000th home built around the world! Seven of those homes stand today in Polk County, Texas, and the eighth is under construction in Moscow, Texas, north of Livingston about 20 miles. Number nine will be built on Miracle Way in Livingston, starting in January 2009. Add to these nine the homes built in Africa with our tithe, and you have an impressive accomplishment for an affiliate not yet six years old in a rural East Texas county.

Hurricane Ike, for all its fury, was unable to damage any of the Habitat homes in Polk County. The electric meter box on one house was damaged by a tree limb and had to be replaced, but that was the only damage, fortunately. Habitat houses are built not only with a lot of love but a lot of nails, and they can withstand almost anything!

Escapees have been responsible for funding and building two of these homes in Polk County. And Escapees volunteers have been involved in the construction of all of the Habitat homes built in Polk County. In addition, some Escapees members contribute regularly to the work of the affiliate. As important as volunteer laborers are, it still takes dollars to buy the materials needed.

Perhaps Escapees member Sally Hedberg said it best: It only takes one Habitat build to give a person “habitities,” a condition that makes you want to volunteer for more builds.

About the HfH Certified BOF
The Escapees Habitat for Humanity is a certified BOF (special interest group) setup to support the efforts of Habitat of Humanity and the Care-A-Vanners. They participate in builds offered nationwide by Habitat affiliates, giving a “Hand Up, Not a Handout” to qualified recipients. Their Polk County affiliate is located in Livingston, Texas, with Escapees members Ray and Susie Gearing serving as President and Secretary of the Board.

Member applications are available at www.escapees.com/h4h , or you may send your name, phone #, SKP#, address and e-mail to Allen Downs, 120 Rainbow Dr., #2045, Livingston, TX 77399-1020. Make checks to BOF HfH. Dues are $5/year, with BOF quarterly newsletters and Care-A-Vanner build updates.

Paul Wolff Campground to Double Campsites

The Courier News - Elgin,IL,USA
RUTLAND TOWNSHIP -- It could be as early as next summer when area camping enthusiasts aren't falling over one another to stake a claim at the Paul Wolff Forest Preserve northwest of Elgin.

Officials have decided to double the capacity of the campground -- on Big Timber Road -- to about 100 sites, and the Kane County Board on Wednesday dedicated almost $102,000 in land-cash funds for the improvements.

With a total cost of about $400,000, according to district officials, the project not only will add campsites but also will provide new infrastructure such as parking, restrooms, and water and electric hookups, according to the application for land-cash dollars. Fifteen campsites will be relocated to secluded, wooded areas.

"This one right now is our only operating adult or family campground," said KCFPD Executive Director Monica Meyers in a telephone interview. "For the last couple of years, we've been pretty much booked on all the holidays and warm-weather weekends."

Campground fails health inspection

Cannon Falls Beacon - Cannon Falls,MN,USA
Cory Axelson, the owner and operator of Hidden Valley Campground near Welch, said this week that he's well on his way to correcting deficiencies identified during an inspection by the Goodhue County Public Health Service in August.

The county's environmental health department tests the drinking water and inspects the campground annually. According to the August 18, 2008, inspection report, the campground was improperly handling garbage and recycling; had a number of safety hazards related to fires, hazardous waste disposal, and infestation; had six violations related to sewage disposal, two associated with plumbing issues, and one concerning fuel oil tanks. An additional order was issued citing unlicensed campsites added since the facility received its conditional use permit in 1981. Some of the issues had been noted as far back as 2001.

The report states that some sewage has been pumped directly onto the ground; the campground didn't have the required Minnesota Pollution Control Agency disposal system permit for the operation of a lagoon; and Axelson is not a licensed septic pumper, as required by MPCA.

A follow-up inspection two weeks later found that a number of items had been corrected and no new issues were identified. Since that second inspection, Axelson said, the other items on the inspection report have been fixed, or are works in progress.

Inauguration Is Boon To RV Parks & Campgrounds

"This is the busiest inauguration we've ever had usually at this time of year we're not getting any calls it's been off the hook everyday." Says Michael Raybourne, a spokesman for Cherry Hill Park just off the DC beltway.

Half of the RV sites at Cherry Hill are already reserved....and the rest are going fast.

"We have over 400 sites and as of right now we have about 220 reservations and everyday we're getting a couple dozen more I wouldn't be surprised we would be sold out by the time January rolls around." Raybourne says.

RVers Adjusting to Economy

RESTON, Va., Nov. 11 -- RV owners love the RV lifestyle, but just like everyone else, they're concerned about today's sagging economy and looking for ways to save money and cut costs. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association's fall/winter survey, RVers are adjusting to the economy by traveling closer to home and staying longer in one place. By having their "homes on wheels" with them, RV owners say they can stretch their dollars by saving on costly airfares, hotels and restaurant meals.

The latest Campfire Canvass fall/winter survey of RV owners by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, reveals that 29 percent plan to travel more this fall and winter than last year; 56 percent plan to travel the same amount as last year; and 15 percent plan to travel less than last year.

Sixty-two percent of survey respondents say they'll travel to destinations closer to home, while 38 percent say they'll stay longer at the same destination.

Campground Remains Unfinished

Pembina Valley Online - Winkler,MB,Canada
A former K.O.A. campground near Emerson continues to sit empty and unused.

The facility was taken over by the province when the developers of the campground pulled out of the project several years ago.

Emerson Mayor Wayne Arseny says the province has put the campground on the back burner.

He says natural resources has no budget to develop the campground as most of their money in the region is earmarked for St. Malo Park.

Arseny notes it's going to take a private developer with a vision to make the campground a success.

He says the facility has most of the infrastructure in place, and has tremendous potential as a nature campground with its many trails and the Red River nearby.

Florida Keys History and Attractions

Cindi Dolberry writes that her favorite part of Florida are the unusual Florida Keys which consist of approximately 1,700 islands located in the southeast United States, beginning at the southeastern tip of Florida, 15 miles south of Miami.

The Keys arc south-southwest and then turn westward to Key West which is the last inhabited island, but the uninhabited Dry Tortugas are also a part of the island chain.

The Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson is one of the most remote, smallest, and least visited national park and definitely worth visiting. Besides the historic 1846 Fort Jefferson, there are seven small islands, nesting areas for a variety of wild birds, coral reefs and snorkeling and scuba attractions.

Cindy's favorite resort, Venture Out is Oceanside at mile marker 23 on Cudjoe Key.

Venture Out has views of the Atlantic Gulf Stream and Hawk Channel. Sunrise is breathtaking reflecting in Kemp Channel and sunset is a performance to be viewed from Cudjoe Bay.

Venture Out first opened in 1969 as a RV resort and still has some open lots for RV´ers. One of the few places in the Keys that is zoned for RV.

Through the years an eclectic assortment of trailers, mobile homes and recently stilt houses have moved in making the resort as diverse as its full time and snow bird residents.

Four decades ago, Don Clark saw a chance to create one of the area's more popular campsites, with Interstate 24 moving in near property that had been in his family since 1940.

Couple love life in an RV and won't give it up

Winston-Salem Journal - Winston-Salem,NC,USA
or full-time RVers Curt and Mary Heldreth, home is as close as the nearest parking space.

The couple don't feel that they are exactly "roughing it" in their recreational vehicle, but since they packed up and moved out of their West Virginia home more than a year ago, they have discovered a different and exciting way to live.

Curt, 60, a retired teacher and Army major, decided that he wanted to spend his retirement on the go, but he wasn't quite sure how his wife, Mary, 62, would feel about spending all their time in a 35-foot home on wheels.

"We decided to just try it out for a year or two," Curt said. "There are a million people who are RVers and about half are full timers."

Full-time RVers, or people who choose to live in their RV instead of a traditional home, are hitting the highways or setting up at campgrounds to experience the great outdoors year-round. Some travel from state to state, while others find a campground or RV park and stay a few months at a time.

The Heldreths' class A Fleetwood Bounder motor home is small and efficient for life on the move.

Weathering the Storm in a RV

By H.S. Cooper - The Modern Nomad
RVs are self-contained and can withstand reasonably cold temperatures and moderate winds. Yet it is foolish to intentionally weather any type of severe storm in a RV.

The first thing every RVer should invest in is a NOAA weather radio and/or weather alert radio. In case a weather Watch or Warning is issued, you will have the latest information. This information can not only save your lives, but those around you.

If you are staying in an area prone to severe weather, especially hurricanes and tornadoes, then you should find out where the local shelters are. Make a trip, finding the route. Ask the campground staff if they notify their campers about severe weather alerts and what they advise campers to do in stormy situations.

Storms bring out the best and the worst in people. After the second hurricane we were in (as Full-Timers), we witnessed things we didn’t think possible. Scavengers were driving through the RV resort looking for aluminum scraps (especially off older trailers and venting). For those who weren’t able to return or were Seasonals away for the summer, belongs that were scattered were targets for scavengers to steal.

But again, storms also bring out the best in people. Many of us gathered folks belongs and secured it back on their property. We also shared food and supplies with other campers in need. We helped cleaned up debris (as much as we could until the professionals arrived) and offered generator usage time for those who didn’t have generators.

campground owners cry foul over business lost to Park Service

Naples Daily News - Naples,FL,USA
NAPLES — Tensions are heating up between the National Park Service and Everglades City area campground businesses.

Campground owners say the park service is unfairly undercutting them with low rates and improved hook-ups for deluxe RVs in the Big Cypress National Preserve along U.S. 41 East.

“I think we’ve got what might be kind of a crisis situation,” Outdoor Resorts of Chokoloskee owner Kenny Brown said.

Collier County Commissioner Jim Coletta is asking commissioners Nov. 18 to approve a resolution urging the park service to “utilize standard operational and management techniques to ensure fair and balanced competition.”

A new and improved campground for Lake Manawa State Park is proposed for the northern shoreline, local residents were told Thursday evening.

The current location is too small for the growing demand, and the campsites are too close together, said Robert Schierbaum, DNR district park supervisor.

"It doesn't feel like a state park," he said.

The new site would be located just south of Wright Road near West Shore Drive. Two designs are being considered, Corio said. The first design would feature 100 campsites with 25 of them by the shore. There would also be four cabins available. The current south side location has just 73 campsites and no cabins. The design would also prohibit day users.

The lean, mean, green RV

By Linda Baker NEW YORK TIMES
Over the last few years, Sara and Matt Janssen have been downsizing their life. First, they moved from a 1,600-square-foot home to a small apartment in Montana. Then, wanting to tour the country without harming the planet, they took up residence in a recreational vehicle fueled by used vegetable oil.

They now travel with their 4-year-old daughter, Bella, spreading the word about the sustainable life.

Recreational vehicles, which get about 8 miles a gallon, are often considered the antithesis of low-impact living. But it doesn't have to be that way, said Sara Janssen, speaking by phone from her home, a 36-foot, 1998 Western Alpine Coach, when it was parked in Des Moines recently.

Proposed ordinance to address illegal camping in city

Longview Daily News - Longview,WA,USA
Longview police, code enforcement and fire department officials say there have been an increasing number of people camping in tents and RVs camping in city limits, prompting the city legal department to draft an ordinance giving the city authority to cite illegal campers.

The City Council will discuss the proposed ordinance at a workshop following Thursday's 7 p.m. council meeting. In drafting the legislation, city staff tried to ensure it would not apply to kids sleeping in a backyard tent or people camping at the fairgrounds for a special event, Community Development Director John Brickey says.

The ordinance would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to camp in parks, streets, sidewalks, parking lots or publicly or privately owned areas.

Reservations down at Maine campgrounds

MaineToday.com - Portland,ME,USA
Overall reservations at state-owned campgrounds dropped in 2008, but more Mainers made reservations, the Bureau of Parks and Lands said today.

A total of 12,764 campground reservations were made during 2008, compared to 13,156 in 2007. The bureau blamed the decline on rainy weather and increased gas costs.

Rising prices force Winter Texans to cut back

SAN BENITO — When Bruce and Bonnie Edenfield retired, they dreamed of climbing into their RV to spend their golden years trekking across America.

Before they pulled up and left their hometown of Bend, Ore., they budgeted $500 a month for gas and rental space where they'd park their new 36-foot Gulfstream RV.

Autumn lured them to Vermont and New Hampshire where they "watched the leaves change," he said.

By 2005, they were trading in their RV for a diesel-powered 40-foot Alfa motor home to journey from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to Alaska.

A year later, they toured the East Coast from Florida to Virginia Beach.

But soaring fuel prices had eaten up their travel budget.

So they figured they'd cut down on their travel and buy a home.

After wintering in the Rio Grande Valley for three years, they settled into a park model at Fun-N-Sun RV Resort.

"As costs rose, we started thinking we'd spend more time in one place," Bruce Edenfield said. "We liked the Valley so much we decided to come here."

Thor's 1st-Quarter Sales Dropped 42% on RV Demand

(Bloomberg) -- Thor Industries Inc., the largest U.S. maker of travel trailers, said quarterly sales dropped 42 percent to the lowest in more than 4 years as demand for recreational vehicles plunged.

Revenue for the three months ended Oct. 31 slid to $439.2 million, Jackson Center, Ohio-based Thor said in a statement today. Sales of RVs such as towable trailers and motor homes fell by half to $331.2 million, while bus revenue rose.

Tightening credit markets and a U.S. jobless rate that climbed to a five-year high eroded consumer confidence. Shipments of RVs have fallen 25 percent this year through September, according to the Reston, Virginia-based Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.

The story of the RV

Pain in the LOUP blog post
During a frustrating bout with idiot drivers, traffic and plain idiots in Hampton Roads, VA on a sunny Saturday in June we make the commitment to get out of VA asap. That Monday LK had freshened his resume and put up FSBO posts in several online spots as well has staked a sign in our yard.

Quickly he got a job offer in Lexington, KY.

We had borrowed the motorhome my aunt and uncle own to stay for a bit. It is a 15 year old 30′ Class A Fleetwood Stormwind, too small for us and the dogs but better than paying for hotels while we look for a place to stay long term. LK at this point is not a fan of the idea of living in an RV full time. I have always wanted to shed the shackles of owning a lot of stuff and just go go go. LK, only having experience with this one RV is against it.

One day a couple come to KY Horse Park with a Heartland 5th Wheel. They offer a tour of their place. LK is smitten - starts researching Heartland immediately.

Texas Mother Neff State Park Open

Mother Neff State Park, known as the first official state park in Texas, reopened for day use only in March after crews scraped layers of mud and silt from remaining park facilities and removed truckload after truckload of tree limbs and other debris from picnic areas and the riverside campground. This fall, the campground is open once again, though under mostly primitive conditions. There is still no electricity and the restrooms and showers are not yet back in operation.

But no matter. Park Superintendent Leah Huth says the campground is open and she is charging the $5 primitive camping rate until full services are restored. There is potable water at the park and the security light between the Recreation Hall and rock tabernacle illuminates most of the nearby 21 pecan bottomlands campsites. Each has a picnic table, fire ring, lantern post and waste-high grill. Persons 13 and older pay a $2 entry fee daily.

“If someone wants to come in a set up a pop-up or trailer, and spend a weekend hiking and fishing, they can do that,” Huth says. “A lot of people prefer a smaller, more remote location and don't want to be among hundreds of other campers. Mother Neff offers a bit slower pace than larger parks.”

DOUGLAS COUNTY - A campground in Douglas County has closed for the season, and won't reopen until next year because of budget cuts.

The economy seems to be affecting everything, including recreation areas in our county.

Whistlers Bend Park has closed its overnight campground until March because of cutbacks on funding.

County Parks Director Jim Dowd said they had a bit of a slow season this summer, with not as many people camping as expected. Consequently, the campground will be closed.

The park and disk golf course are still open for use and will stay open through the winter season.

Layoffs continue at Winnebago

FOREST CITY — Winnebago Industries officials confirmed Friday that layoffs are continuing at the Forest City-based RV manufacturer, but they once again declined to say how many workers have been let go this week.

“We continue to evaluate the need for additional right-sizing measures in accordance with market demand. That process is ongoing,” Winnebago spokeswoman Kelli Harms said.

Winnebago has been hit hard by the economic slump that has gripped the U.S. in recent months. Although gasoline prices have dropped dramatically in recent weeks, the credit crunch has accelerated the slowdown in motor-home sales.

RV dealers says buying online and at malls is future

FresnoBee.com
Dan Gamel, an RV dealer in Fresno, announced last summer he was liquidating his inventory, but ended up changing the way he does business. He slashed his inventory by two-thirds, cut his work force 64%, cut the number of dealerships he operates in half and switched manufacturers, signing a deal with Coachmen.

He said he thinks he may have the right model for the market through software he spent years promoting and perfecting his operation. The software allows customers to enter a Coachmen dealership online, look at the company's various offerings, make a purchase, secure a loan, reserve a campground and perform other functions.

Coachmen dealers can buy or sell from one Web site, which keeps inventory and personnel costs down. "They don't have to stock $20 million worth of inventory," Gamel said. "They can stock a couple million and sell from Coachmen's site."

Gamel also is working on his newest project: mall storefronts with entrances that resemble the front of an RV. Customers sit in recreational vehicle furniture while they shop online.

He's talked about the concept for years and hopes to debut his first one next year. It won't be long, he said, before physical dealerships will be a thing of the past.

Black River State Forest gets new bathroom facilities at campgrounds

Jackson County Chronicle - Black River Falls,WI,USA
The Black River State Forest recently completed a project that replaced three bathroom facilities at campgrounds.

According to Black River State Forest Superintendent Peter Bakken, a major improvement are the new bathrooms at Horse Camp Campground, which replaced pit toilets.

“They are very attractive looking,” Bakken said. “Use of the Horse Camp has never been very high, so we’re hoping the improved facility would increase that.”

Two bathroom facilities at East Fork Campground also were replaced, utilizing solar panels and adding outside lights for nighttime.

“It’s a nice upgrade to that campground,” Bakken said.

Camping trip disrupted by RV fire

Mike Gatrost and two of his friends were supposed to spend Sunday evening catching fish at Lake Shawnee. Instead, the Topekan sifted through the ashes of his 1987 Pace Arrow recreational vehicle and recalled the times he had spent in it.

"I was hoping it was a dream. Instead, it's a nightmare. That's reality right there," Gatrost said Sunday pointing to his RV that was destroyed by a fire. "I lived in it for three years in California."
Gatrost and his friends were going to spend a quiet Sunday evening fishing at Lake Shawnee and then camp in Gatrost's RV. After jump-starting the RV, Gatrost noticed smoke and flames.

Gage Reynolds, 14, of Topeka, was visiting his grandparents next door to where Gatrost's RV was parked. He noticed flames, too.

"We tried to put it out," Reynolds said, as he shared photographs and video of flames shooting from the RV. "It was so big."

Shawnee Heights Fire District received a call about an RV fire at 6:23 p.m. Sunday, said Mark Engholm, public information officer.

"When we arrived on scene, there was heavy smoke and flames," Engholm said. "It was completely engulfed."

Home is where the park is

For full time RVers, home is as close as the nearest parking space.

Curt and Mary Heldreth don't feel that they are exactly "roughing it" in their recreational vehicle, but since they packed up and moved out of their West Virginia home more than a year ago, they have discovered a different and exciting way to live.

Curt, 60, a retired teacher and Army major, decided that he wanted to spend his retirement on the go, but he wasn't quite sure how his wife Mary, 62, would feel about spending all their time in a 35-foot home on wheels.

RV is affordable travel mode

San Francisco Chronicle - CA, USA
Holly Reich
Driving an RV has been a long-time dream of mine. I must admit, however, I was scared to ever drive one, especially on the crowded East Coast. But when I got the opportunity to drive a recreational vehicle in the Canadian Rockies I said OK, and didn't look back.

I took my good friend, Adeline, along as a co-driver on a four-day round-trip Canadian journey from Calgary to Banff and Lake Louise. Our hotel was our RV and we hooked up at campgrounds along the way.

Our Class C Mini motor home was 29 feet long and a few cars wide (8.5 feet wide). It slept six with a master bedroom, sleeping loft (cab-over bunk) full-on kitchen, bathroom and dining room. For a girl living in Manhattan it was plenty big. Plus, there were tons of storage spaces and cabinets - even a couple of outside closets for our suitcases and lawn chairs.
