Texas RV resort gets hit by car burglar

Several RV parks line the highway that runs through Kerrville. And police say the folks that live there or travel to them are often retirees, and often easy targets of crooks.

Early Thursday morning, while it was still dark out, police say 23 year old Andy Kidd II made his way through one of the popular RV resorts there searching for unlocked cars.

Police say he found five, and stole several valuable items from inside them.

Sale of Michigan's campgrounds Considered

Michigan’s state forest campgrounds are under the scrutiny of the Department of Natural Resources for possible closure and sale due to decreased funding from the state. This goes against the opinion of many Michigan citizens who have written their representatives and senators in favor of a bill that would increase funding for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at no additional cost to the state government.

State forest campgrounds consist of five to 20 rustic campsites nestled away in the forests of the northern Lower and Upper Peninsulas. For $15 to $20 per night, campers can enjoy the Michigan wilderness with some privacy, much unlike the traditional state park campground. Each campground contains hand pumps for drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. Many of the campgrounds can be reached only by hiking or paddling.

Many of Michigan’s northern forests contain two-track roads that provide opportunities for interesting adventures on the mountain bike. Some of the roads are barely suitable for vehicular traffic and often require off-road vehicles or bikes.

New RVs expand options in downsized choices

More fuel-efficient is definitely "in" these days when it comes to RV products. Manufacturers are coming up with interesting, new, smaller motorized and towable options for those looking for something a bit different to fit today's economic sensibilities.

Motorhomes based on the Dodge Sprinter van, both the full van and cutaway chassis, are popular and commonplace today. Winnebago Industries (www.winnebagoind.com, 641/585-3535) has gone one step further with the introduction of its all-new 2010 Via Class A motorhome.

The Via and its Itasca equivalent, the Reyo, are based on the Sprinter "cowl" chassis that's currently being imported exclusively by Winnebago. This chassis allows the company to design its entire coach from the ground up, as is typical for any Class A motorhome, instead of working with the Sprinter cab or body features used on the earlier models.

Motor home catches fire on highway

BERNE TOWNSHIP — Carol Coffman watched Thursday as firefighters extinguished the last flames that consumed her 1987 Toyota motor home.

She could see the nose of the truck and not much else.

The motor home was a pile of blackened refuse -- nothing recognizable but a propane tank, a small grill and wheels with their rubber tires melted off -- along the U.S. 33 bypass between Ross and Hamburg roads.

"It was my pride and joy," Coffman said of the camper. "I've been camping in tents all my life."

Her son, 23-year-old Jon Coffman, was driving the motor home west on U.S. 33 when he smelled smoke. He looked behind him to see smoke billowing from the rear right tire on the driver's side. The fire soon spread from the back of the vehicle to the front, he said.

"Once I pulled over, there was smoke billowing out from beneath the sink where the water tanks are and the stove and the heating unit," he said.

Michigan considers which campgrounds to divest

Michigan needs to reduce the cost of maintaining State campgrounds. They have already closed some campgrounds to meet reduced funding levels. Looking to the future, if funding cuts continue, as we all expect they will, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Lansing is looking for your input on how to shrink the cost of State campgrounds.

The DNR has created a questionnaire for the general public to help them establish which criteria should guide decision making on reducing expenses to meet the expected revenues.

Sun-N-Fun RV resort still a community after 50 years

The Sun-N-Fun RV Resort is now one of Southwest Florida's largest mobile home and RV parks -- a Sarasota landmark celebrating its 50th anniversary that continues to attract tourists and the same winter guests year after year.

It was half a century ago that three Ohio couples set out on a mission to build a recreation center off a then-unpaved portion of Fruitville Road that is now a short drive east of Interstate 75.

A decade in, they actually started to make money from their efforts.

The Hysells, Marvin and Marilyn Keyser, and Duane and Evelyn Werstler had their share of doubts and struggles during their first years of financial hardship.

Introducing camp sites to the park officially changed the game and gave the couples a taste of the comfortable lives they would eventually lead.

A flood at the Myakka State Park revealed an opportunity to the owners. The Sun-N-Fun grounds, at 18 feet above sea level, were ideal for camping.

The 175-acre park grew from accommodating only a few hundred trailers to about 1,000 when the three couples sold it in 1978.

Sun-N-Fun now has more than 1,500 sites for RVs to settle in for a week or the whole winter season.

And guests barely have to leave the resort, with a restaurant, poolside bar and grill, entertainment and many activities within footsteps.

"It's like living in a bubble," said current manager Tim Deputy. "You don't really have to leave it. If we had a Wal-Mart here, they'd never leave."

Retired couple gives up house for life on wheels

You can't hide from a spouse in a camper. Good thing Jim Caverly and wife Jeanne Meyer-Caverly usually get along so well.

The couple, formerly of Stroudsburg, now of Everywhere, U.S.A., live full time in a recreational vehicle.

"Let me give you a tour," Jeanne, 62, chuckled, "Here's the living room, here's the kitchen. That's about it." She had not moved a step.

A walk-through bathroom and bedroom in the back completes 320 square feet of living quarters in the 40-foot Country Coach diesel-pusher. The rig is parked on a farm outside Bangor while they visit family.

They pared down 25 years worth of household accumulations and kept just what would fit in the RV. After two years in the RV, they sometimes compare the differences between stationary and mobile life, but say they have never regretted the decision.

"We knew if we were ever going to do this kind of thing we are going to have to do it now," Jim said.

Higher State Park Camping Fees: Lesser of two evils

With camping and day-use fees set to increase Monday, a number of visitors Saturday at California state parks on the Central Coast said they are willing to pay the extra money if it means keeping the sites open.

The fees are rising to help offset recent budget reductions and keep more state parks open, according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

Starting Monday, camping fees will increase by $10, to $21 a night, and day-use parking fees will go up to $5, a boost of $2. Camping reservations made before Monday will be honored at the lower price.

State parks users expressed some disappointment at the fee hike, but generally, were accepting of the higher prices.

Outdoor Civilization at Myrtle Beach

Patty Grigg, her husband, and their 11-year-old son, John, lounge in their trailer, travel by golf cart and cook on the grill for a week and a half every summer at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach.

For the past eight years, they've left their home in Shelby, N.C., for this vacation.

"It's just a good place to keep kids," Patty Grigg said. "It's pretty much our only family vacation."

Whether you want to camp under the stars or in the family RV, the Myrtle Beach area offers a variety of camp sites, entertainment and activities.

Best of all, the per-night costs are a relative bargain, leaving you with more left over for dining, T-shirts and other activities.

Each summer, thousands of people like the Griggs make the journey to Myrtle Beach, not to stay in a luxury oceanfront hotel or a plush time-share condo, but to spend a week, or sometimes even just a weekend, at one of the area's campgrounds.

"We might leave to go out to eat one or two times, but for the most part, we don't have to leave the gates," Patty Grigg said. "Everything we have is here."

The campgrounds have grocery stores, multiple swimming pools, arcades, nature centers, skate parks, laundry facilities, dances and day camp for the kids.

Best of all, they're just a short golf-cart ride away from the beach, visitors say.

Where have all the tourists gone?

Montana's travel numbers were "pretty soft" through June, said Betsy Baumgart, travel director for the Montana Office of Tourism, "but the real heart of our tourism season is July through September. And our tourism partners, including concessionaires in Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, have told us their reservations have picked up steadily since June, though consumers seem to be spending less in restaurants and retail stores."

In fact, Yellowstone Park last week reported a record number of visitors in July, 900,500. In July 2008, 808,110 people visited the park.

Glacier Park's July numbers are not fully compiled yet but also appeared strong, a spokesman said. Glacier had a 14 percent increase in visitors in June compared with the previous year, from 287,059 in 2008 to 327,572 this year.

"With the uncertain economy, many people have been waiting until the last minute to decide to travel, and then staying closer to home and seeking good value," Baumgart said, adding that can benefit Montana's reasonably priced travel.

A Butte family enjoying a four-day stay at the Great Falls KOA might be typical of those staying closer to home to economize.

Dan Carroll, his fiancée, Kristi Jozovich, and her three children came to Great Falls to shop for school clothes, attend a couple of baseball games, bike on the River's Edge Trail, swim at the Electric City Water Park and tour the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

Carroll and Jozovich said they considered other options such as Salt Lake City or Spokane and the nearby Silverwood Theme Park for their big summer vacation but figured Great Falls had "just as much to do and is more affordable."

The Great Falls KOA is the nicest they've found, Jozovich said, with a water spray park and a deluxe cabin with a kitchenette so they can reduce spending on meals out. It's a better deal than getting two motel rooms, she said.

Still, plenty of RV drivers from the Midwest and Canada were lined up waiting to pull into the KOA a few evenings ago.

Manager Al Belknap estimated camper nights have been up 10 or 15 percent so far this summer "and August has always been our busiest month."

The Great Falls campground has been packed on weekends and at least 70 percent full week nights, he said.

Tourists Keep RV Rental Business Going

El Monte RV estimates that 85 of its 200 motor homes still leave the lot every week, a number holding steady since the economic downturn. (The company also sells vehicles at the end of their rental lives, and reports a 50 percent drop in that business since last year.) Both Cruise America, the nation's largest RV renter with 130 stores, and Road Bear RV reported only marginal rental decreases. (Neither would provide specific numbers or comment on sales.)

Most RV rental business in Las Vegas comes from European tourists, as it did before the downturn (El Monte estimates 95 percent of its customers, Road Bear 75 percent and Cruise America 50 percent).

"They're just really into it," says El Monte branch manager Roger Brewer. "They like the wide-open spaces we have here because they're not used to that."

And gasoline prices don't impede their plans, since Europeans are used to paying twice what we do.

Brewer also notes a "huge increase" in business over the past two summers from Americans who were forced to sell their RVs.

"They say they miss the experience," he says.
