Winter Texans begin to arrive in New Braunfels

Using planes, trains and lots and lots of recreational vehicles, many so-called “Winter Texans” will call New Braunfels home for as long as several months.

Generally, Winter Texans tend to be retirement-age, empty nesters with the resources to own – or rent - homes in different parts of the United States.

Most have no desire to shovel snow, so travelling around Texas during the colder weather is a happier and warmer option.

For some, it may even make financial sense. They don’t have to deal with high energy or heating bills.

As many have the means to meander around the Lone Star State, it’s hard to quantify exactly how many Winter Texans stay in New Braunfels and the surrounding areas.

Campers Rescued When Flash Flood Inundates Campground

OZARK, Ark. -- A popular off-roading event has not been canceled after flood waters sparked a seven-hour search and rescue operation Thursday night into Friday morning.

The Mulberry River near Byrd's Outdoor Adventure in Franklin County rose more than 10 feet Thursday night, forcing the evacuation of more than 200 campers.

Over 20 people couldn't escape and found shelter on the roof of an outhouse, and a multi-agency rescue operation turned even more chaotic when three rescue personnel were swept into the river's strong currents.

"The river came up 8 feet within 20 minutes," said Bob Bell. He and 24 others -- including two children -- took shelter on the roof of an out house.

Motor home catches fire, explodes in Arizona

A 25-foot motor home caught fire and exploded Wednesday afternoon, sending a fireball into the sky that could be seen for miles.

According to Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dan Long, the driver of the motor home, Larry Jensen, 55, of Safford was headed to Willcox shortly after 2 p.m. when he thought one of his gasoline tanks emptied.

Jensen allegedly told DPS officers he pulled his 1985 Freeport motor home over to the side of the road near milepost 107 (about 13 miles south of Safford) to switch tanks and noticed a fuel line was leaking gas. At about the same time, he noticed a problem with one of his battery cables. Soon after, a spark from the cable ignited a pool of gas that had collected underneath the vehicle.

He attempted to drive away from the gas pool, but the fire followed the fuel and ignited the motor home. As Jensen attempted to drive away, he ended up spreading fire along the shoulder of the highway. Motorists traveling behind Jensen were able to smother the fires by scooping up sand with their hands and throwing it on the blazes. The quick-acting motorists likely prevented an even more serious situation as the wind was blowing and could easily have spread the fires, according to witnesses.

Near-permanent residency now allowed at RV resort

The Boulder City Council on Tuesday amended an ordinance that doesn’t allow lot owners at the Boulder Oaks RV resort to stay more than 180 consecutive days a year, now requiring them to leave for just one day.

Community members of the recreational vehicle resort attended the meeting to voice concerns about the ordinance that has been a concern for residents since it took effect in February 1987.

Attorney Michael Lemcool, speaking on behalf of Boulder Oaks members, said they shouldn’t be required to leave a lot they pay taxes on.

“Boulder Oaks RV resort is individually owned lots,” Lemcool said. “The city needs to change the zoning code.”

Other residents didn’t understand why the City Council wanted to enforce an ordinance that has been ignored for years.

“What’s the benefit or motive behind it?” resident Dave Bruce asked. “We are a tight-knit community.”

Prposed Alberta RV Resorts Opposed by Village Residents

Lacombe County, Alberta, will likely hold a second public hearing on new bylaws for RV resorts after significant changes were suggested.

The county has been working on a bylaw since last year designed to prevent the over-development of RV resorts.

The bylaw was considered necessary because several developers have proposed large RV developments on Sylvan and Gull Lakes that could see thousands of seasonal residents lured to the county.

The RV resorts have already proved controversial, with some rural landowners and summer village residents opposed to the scale of development proposed.

Louisiana Campgrounds thriving despite economy

Campgrounds and RV parks nationally have seen a mild drop in visitors because of the recession, but campgrounds in the Tri-parishes are largely doing well, say local park owners.

Part of the reason is most campgrounds in the area accommodate workers coming in who need a place to stay.

The 23 campsites at Linda's Campground and RV Park in Gibson are usually used by workers.

"Travelers we haven't had in God knows when," said owner Linda Aucoin, "but workers come from Mission, Texas, and New Jersey. We've had people who stayed from Rhode Island. There's no work in that area.

"Campgrounds in our area are not for recreation, they're not like Jellystone," said La Wanda Leger, owner of Hideaway Ponds, also in Gibson. "They're for working people, except for Lake End Park in Morgan City. It's a common problem in the campground industry, people wanting to live at the facility."

RV sales up 13% over last month

WNDU-TV
There’s good news for the Elkhart County economy.

According to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth, the RV industry has grown for the second month in a row.

Last month, more than 17,000 RV's were sold, which is a 13% increase over last September.

It's the first year-to-year gain in almost two years.

Trailers led the recovery with a 17.5% increase. Motorhome shipments actually fell, but analysts say they are stabilizing.

So far in 2009, overall shipments have been down from 2008 by nearly 43%.

Innovative Storage Solution for RV Owners

SAN DIEGO, CA, October 28, 2009 -- The principals of Big Easy Secure Warehouses are using their extensive development expertise to construct an exclusive class of storage that has found great success across the country. They call the concept a "personal warehouse". It is a term used in the storage industry to describe over-sized storage units that are for sale rather than for rent. Over the last several years, the concept caught on in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Texas, and in several northern states but they are new to Southern California. Founded by commercial real estate veterans, Big Easy Secure Warehouses was formed to meet the strong and growing demand for over-sized storage while providing incomparable value through ownership.

"There are over 1,000,000 RV's in California with countless more boats, personal watercraft, off-road vehicles, and collector cars yet there are few storage locations that provide fully enclosed units to store these expensive toys," said co-founder Chris Hughes. "Our concept goes beyond fully enclosed storage, offering exclusive space for the upper-end of the market that owns the more expensive coaches, high-performance boats, classic cars, and other valuable assets," Hughes added.

While the real value lies in the ability to own a unit, the Company wanted to create a project that provided every desirable amenity. The site includes an RV and boat wash bay, RV dump station and common area restrooms. The project's design includes extra-wide loading doors with a minimum 14 foot wide and 14 foot high clearance. Unit sizes will range from 480 to over 3,000 square feet, far more than what is offered at any other Southern California RV storage, boat and car storage project. The Company is also heavily investing in security. The facility will feature regular security patrol, gated electronic access, multiple motion-sensitive security cameras and each unit will include an entry alarm.

The Company has secured the required entitlements to construct the project in Temecula Valley. They chose the site because of its central location and easy freeway access from Interstates 15 and 215. Big Easy Secure Warehouses is now marketing the project to prospective buyers and has received strong interest in the ownership concept. The Company plans on offering phase I reservations in early 2010 to those people who have joined their interest list.

Kentucky's Pennyrile Campground to get $1.1 Million Improvements

DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. – The campground at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park near Dawson Springs will receive $1.1 million so horse camping sites can be added, First Lady Jane Beshear announced today.

The expansion of the campground is in the design phase and state park officials estimate between 10 and 15 full service sites for horse camping will be added, along with other campground improvements.

“These new sites will make a great addition for Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park and this region,” Mrs. Beshear said. “Horse enthusiasts will enjoy visiting and camping here because this is a beautiful area that’s perfect for horseback riding.”

The funding comes from a $60 million bond pool that was approved several years ago by the General Assembly for state park improvements.

Mrs. Beshear was joined by Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow and Parks Commissioner Gerry van der Meer.

The park currently has 68 improved campsites with water and electric hookups. The campground features utility hook ups, a dump station, and one central service building with showers, rest rooms and a laundry.

Park officials are currently making plans for the horse camping sites. The campground will serve as the trailhead to approximately 40 miles of equestrian trails within the adjacent Pennyrile State Forest.

Pennyrile Forest State Park has a lodge, cottages, restaurant, gift shop, 18-hole golf course, campground, boat rentals, swimming, mini-golf, hiking trails and picnic areas.

Two other state parks – Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and Taylorsville Lake State Park – have horse campsites available. The Department of Parks is also adding horse camping sites at Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill.

Service reductions, closures for CA Inland Empire state parks

Inland Empire hikers, bird enthusiasts, campers and anglers will be disappointed to learn that five popular state parks in the Southern California region will experience considerable service reductions and even weekday closures beginning Sunday.

The reductions are part of a statewide effort to save money and prevent the total closure of perhaps more than 100 parks. The Inland Empire district announced its reductions Monday.

Park-goers in other California regions can expect similar announcements. And it remains unclear what will happen at the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2010.

RVing is for the dogs

By Rosemary McClure, Reporting from San Francisco
My pal Darby and I love to go where the wild things are. In his case, that's because he qualifies as one of them.

Darby is a happy-go-lucky wheaten terrier with a penchant for travel. The mere whisper of the words "Let's go" unleashes boundless enthusiasm in him. We make great traveling companions because I also get pretty hyped when I hear those words, although I try not to leap around and whine.

Last month the great outdoors called, and we answered with a resounding yes and a hearty woof. Both of us love luxury hotels, but we don't mind roughing it now and then.

Luckily, conditions are improving for dogs that camp or go RVing with their families. It makes economic sense: Statistics show that 50% to 75% of the nation's RVers travel with a pet, enticing some private park owners to become more sensitive to the needs of dog owners.

Still, most RV parks and campgrounds have a long way to go.

"While over 90% of the RV parks and campgrounds listed on Camp-California.com accept dogs, most have limited amenities," said Debbie Sipe, who represents the California Assn. of RV Parks & Campgrounds. "However, a handful of parks are investing in unique pet activities."

Oregon Agency Holds Fate of Park Model Resort

Millions of dollars invested in the Hyatt Lake Resort in southern Oregon are on the line as park model cabin owners fear the fallout from a recent ruling by a Jackson County hearings officer.

At the same time, the owner of the resort, Bob McNeely, filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 30 for Nor’wester Industries Inc. of Washington, the company that built the cabins, which McNeely describes as recreational vehicles, according to the Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore.

On Oct. 13, McNeely filed an appeal with the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) over the Jackson County hearings officer’s decision that finds the county planning department erred when it allowed 22 units on the property in the first place.

Owners of the cabins, who have agreements to rent them out for $150 or more a night, now are worried about their $150,000 to $200,000 investment, and the fear has spread to nearby Campers Cove, where another 25 units have been installed. Most of the owners live in Jackson County.

Are the RVers coming to Florida this year, or not?

SEBRING -- In response to an improving economy, the Florida Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds announced on Oct. 14 that advance reservations are up at many campgrounds and RV parks around the state.

The News-Sun conducted an informal survey of local RV camps and resorts to see if the statewide trend included Highlands County.

Reports by camp and resort managers indicate a mixed bag.

The majority of resort managers report business is much as it was in the 2008-09 winter season, which was slower than the season before.

Budget cuts targeting Pennsylvania state parks

TOM VENESKY OUTDOORS - Wilkes Barre Times-Leader
Last week Pennsylvania’s state park system earned a 2009 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The award was announced on Oct. 14 in Utah at the annual meeting of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association. It recognizes the job that the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources does to attract people to our state parks through a variety of programs that, most importantly, connect them to the outdoors.

There are other factors that went into the award, but nothing means more than simply connecting people with nature. It’s a job that our 117 state parks do well.

From January through July of this year, more than 23.5 million people visited Pennsylvania’s state parks, a 17 percent increase from the same period in 2008.

Annually, the state parks average 35 million visitors. Pretty impressive … for now.

I expect that number to drop in the near future thanks to a state budget that hits DNCR’s Bureau of State Parks with a $9 million, or 15 percent cut.

Football Fans in RV lots sing Saban’s praises

TUSCALOOSA AL, For some Crimson Tide football fans, tailgating doesn’t just mean a grill and lawn chairs.

On Friday, in the RV lot at the corner of Jack Warner Parkway and Greensboro Avenue, a group of fans from across the state unloaded a firewood and pulled out a karaoke machine.

“We start karaoke (on Fridays) about 6 p.m. and we go until 11 p.m., when the police stop us,” said Pam Kollin of Mobile.

Kollin’s husband, Robbie, said the group has enjoyed bonfires and karaoke since Alabama football games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham.

“Our karaoke draws in a pretty big crowd,” he said. “We even get locals that come out here and sing. You get to listen to some really bad singing out here.”

“If we do go to the national championship, 1992 is not going to hold a light to the crowd that’ll show up for it.”

This particular group of RVers has been meeting for Alabama home football games for nearly 20 years.

American Coach Delivery First Motorhome Under New Ownership

American Coach, the luxury motor home division of Fleetwood RV, Inc., today announced it retailed its first VIP factory delivery - an optional service available to all American Coach customers - since American Industrial Partners, Inc. acquired the company in July. VIP factory delivery is unique in that customers take delivery of their new American Coach model where it was built, and to learn how to operate it with a factory representative.

"The American Coach VIP factory delivery is one of the many ways we try to make our customers feel special," said John Draheim, president of Fleetwood RV, Inc. "It creates an opportunity for us to personally connect with our customers, as well as helps us ensure their complete satisfaction before they hit the road."

"Customers who select our VIP factory delivery option have the unique chance to see where their coaches are made and to meet the people that helped build them," said Justin Humphreys, national sales director for American Coach and Revolution LE. "Everyone who is involved in the production of our American Coach line of luxury motor homes has a tremendous sense of pride about what they do, and who better to take a customer through their new coach then someone who had a hand in its construction."

Customers John and Pat Goodwin selected the VIP factory delivery option when they purchased their second American Coach - a 2009 American Tradition 42M, from Tom Johnsons Camping Center in Concord, NC.

"We are extremely pleased with our VIP delivery experience," said Pat Goodwin. "The American Coach Delivery team brought an attention to detail and an incredible knowledge of the product which made our delivery the best we have ever had. We left Decatur feeling confident and excited about our beautiful new coach, and with peace of mind in having American Coach's legendary service standing behind us. Spartan Motors Reports Third Quarter Profit

Spartan Motors, Inc., a chassis maker supplying the motorhome industry, today announced results for its 2009 third quarter highlighted by continued profitability as a result of the swift actions taken by the company to aggressively realign its cost structure to current volume levels.

Net earnings for the quarter were $0.8 million, or $0.02 per share, which includes pre-tax restructuring charges of $0.9 million. Excluding these charges, the adjusted earnings per share would have been $0.04 cents.

Consolidated net sales for the quarter were $89.7 million, down 62.2 percent from the same period last year due to the completion of a large-scale defense contract in the prior year's quarter, coupled with the weaker macroeconomic environment.

Despite the lower volume levels, the actions taken by the company allowed it to maintain gross margins at 17.6 percent of sales and reduce operating expenses by 30.4 percent from the same quarter of the prior year. In addition, an increased focus on the balance sheet drove a 115.3 percent increase in the cash balance over second quarter 2009, to end the quarter at $36.3 million.

Winnebago Chairman Optomistic Despite 4Q Loss

Winnebago Industries' top executive wants people to look above the bottom line when it comes to the quarterly and year-end financial report it released on Thursday morning.

“I'm optimistic. I'm cautiously optimistic,” Winnebago Chairman of the Board, CEO and President Bob Olson said, “that we are finally seeing signs of a turnaround.”

The bottom line, though, wasn't pretty for the Forest City-based motor-home manufacturer. The company reported a net loss of $50.2 million in the fourth quarter that ended on Aug. 29 and a net loss of $78.8 million for the year.

California RV dealer, employees in court

R&R RV Sales of Anderson, California dealership's one-time owner - Robin Gail Moberg, 51, - and the three former employees - Dwight Malcolm Gaylor, 33, of Anderson; Glenn Richard Hartley, 52 of Redding; and Staci Gaylor Rutledge, 34, of Cottonwood - are accused in the case. They're charged with taking more than 80 trailers, fifth wheels and RVs on consignment from customers, selling them and failing to pay the owners for the vehicles sold.

Mike and Lorraine Viscaino attend a preliminary hearing Tuesday for the former owner and three former employees of R&R RV Sales who are accused of bilking customers out of $300,000. The Viscainos lost $5,000 when they sold their trailer through the Anderson dealership in June 2007.

Many of the victims are seniors, a DMV spokeswoman has said.

The investigation into the business was launched in October 2007 after customers started complaining. Arrest warrants were issued in early April.

Speedway To Allow Dogs In Graves Farm Campground

In an ongoing effort to help fans make their race weekends more affordable, Michigan International Speedway is allowing dogs in its Graves Farm Campground for the 2010 season.

Many race fans who are pet owners incur costs to board their dogs when they head to the Irish Hills track for its NASCAR events. Opening the Graves Farm Campground to campers and their dogs will give fans the opportunity to camp with their pups.

"We’ve heard from our race fans that bringing their dog to the racetrack during their stay is a priority because so many do view their animal as part of the family," MIS President Roger Curtis said. "I personally have a family dog (Kaleb) that I would enjoy bringing to the track on race weekends. Opening the Graves Farm Campground to dogs is the least we could do for our fans."

The campground is open to dogs only.

Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet at all times and must remain within the confines of the pet owners’ campsite or on the walking trail. All owners must clean up after their dog.

Dogs are not permitted in the New Holland Fan Plaza or through the ticket gates unless they are service dogs.

Rules apply for race fans and their dogs in the Graves Farm Campground.

SMITH LAKE Alabama — Located in Crane Hill is a place for RV lovers to rest, relax and enjoy beautiful Smith Lake.
“Here someone can move here and live full time,” said James Lansford, developer. “A lot of people in Cullman like to use the lake but can’t afford it, but here, they can buy a lot and live.”
“We want to offer a way for the average working-class person to own a piece of Smith Lake,” said Larry Harris, developer of Smith Lake RV Resort.
Harris bought the 58 acres of land more than five years ago and decided there was not enough direct water frontage to cut up the land into lots.
“I guess it was a God thing,” he said. “We asked for His leadership and guidance in this.”
Construction is currently underway at the park, and with lots starting at $35,000, Lansford said it is affordable to anyone.
According to Lansford, this will be the first of its kind in Alabama and maybe the Southeast.
“We have researched this and there is nothing like this anywhere on Smith Lake or Alabama,” Lansford said.

Camping Resrvations On Hold at Many California State Parks

All California state parks will remain open under this year’s budget cut of $14 million, however all but 23 camping parks are now available for camping on a first-come-first-served basis only.

The state will resume accepting camping reservations after determining how best to operate within budget but this will likely mean a reduction in services. It is possible that some parks and some campgrounds could be closed certain days of the week when there are fewer visitors. The seasonal schedule could change or the number of campsites might be reduced.

While cost saving measures are being worked out, the following applies to camping parks not listed below:

Provincial Campgrounds Open for 2010 Olympic Games

A number of provincial campgrounds will be open during the 2010 Games in Vancouver, Canada for those willing to camp in February.

The parks include Cultus Lake in Chilliwack, Porteau Cove near Squamish, and Gold Creek in Golden Ears Park. Some of the campsites won't have power or working washrooms. But park staffers believe most people will camp in RVs instead of pitching tents.

Arizona Campgrounds See Uptick in RV Snowbird Reservations

Reservations are up at several Arizona campgrounds and RV parks that cater to snowbirds, according to an informal survey of park operators across the Grand Canyon State by the Arizona Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (Arizona ARVC).

“We think it’s going to be a pretty good season, certainly stronger than last year,” said Merlin Jones, Arizona ARVC president, adding that most parks are reporting higher winter advance reservation figures than they had last year at this time.

Several park operators have also invested in significant improvements this year, which Jones said should please their returning winter visitors as well as snowbirds who are visiting their parks for the first time.

Here’s a sampling of sampling of comments from private park operators in Arizona regarding their reservation levels, business projections and improvements they have made in preparation for the upcoming winter season:

Snowbirds are starting to arrive in Florida

Sun N Fun RV Resort's business is up about 10 percent this October from last year, even though its centerpiece, Olympic-sized swimming pool is out of commission for renovation.

"They're flocking in like you can't believe," Sun N Fun General Manager Tim Deputy said of tourists. "It's like someone opened a door and let them all in all of a sudden, and you can't blame them. The weather up north has been pretty nasty all summer."

Thanks to an early autumn cold snap throughout much of the Northeast, Midwest and Canada, an incrementally recovering economy and pent-up demand, out-of-state travelers appear to be hitting Southwest Florida earlier than usual.

Campers enjoyed Aspen campsites in September

Campgrounds on Independence Pass, southeast of Aspen, stayed open nearly three extra weeks in September — an experiment that may be worth repeating, according to a U.S. Forest Service official.

The Weller, Lincoln Gulch and Lost Man campgrounds have typically closed right after Labor Day weekend, but this year the Forest Service negotiated a longer season with the company that manages the sites to see if campers would make use of the facilities during the fall color season. Last year, campers urged the agency to keep the sites open longer.

Despite some sketchy weather, including one weekend of miserable camping conditions, occupancy for the month at the three campgrounds was roughly 20 percent overall, said Mike Kenealy, recreation special uses coordinator for the White River National Forest.

“I think it was worth keeping those sites open,” he said. “There was some use in those campgrounds for sure.”

Dealer Sued for Selling Urine Soaked Motorhome

Lou Hayes Woodruff purchased a 2002 Alfa motor home in March 2006 from Bretz RV & Marine for nearly $135,000.

When the weather warmed up, the motor home began to smell, Woodruff said in a lawsuit filed in January 2007 in District Court in Missoula, Montana.

Woodruff hired a restoration and janitorial service, which inspected the motor home and found pet urine "in great quantities throughout the entire carpet" as well as urine wicking in some walls. The areas were determined to be "non-salvageable due to extreme amounts of urine," the lawsuit said

Woodruff said she was not informed about the damage before the purchase. She's seeking damages for breach of contract, fraud, breach of good faith and fair dealing and violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

In response to Woodruff's lawsuit, Bretz moved to compel arbitration based on a clause in the purchase contract. The District Court granted the motion.

Woodruff appealed, arguing that the arbitration clause was not within her reasonable expectations as a consumer and because she did not knowingly waive her constitutional rights to a jury trial and to access the court system.

The Montana Supreme Court, in a 4-2 ruling, said the contract met the requirements of an "adhesion contract," in which one party drafts the contract and the other party has no ability to negotiate the terms.

Freightliner Motorhome Buyers to Get a $1,250 Fuel Card

Motorhome enthusiasts who have waited out the bumpy road of a rough economy to buy a new rig now have 1,250 reasons to start planning their next road trip immediately in a new RV. Called "Fueled By Us," Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) is offering a $1,250 USD fuel card with the purchase of any qualifying new motorhome built on a Freightliner chassis from dealers in the United States and Canada. The Fueled By Us offer is available from Oct. 15 - Dec. 31. For more information and details about the Fueled By Us offer, visit www.freightlinerchassis.com/fuel.

Freightliner chassis power some of the most popular and well-built Class A motorhomes available in the industry. The following manufacturers are participating in the Fueled By Us program: Damon, Entegra Coach, Forest River, Gulf Stream, Itasca, Jayco, Four Winds International (formerly known as Mandalay Coach), Newmar, Sportscoach, Tiffin, Triple E and Winnebago. FCCC's Fueled By Us offer applies to new 2008, 2009 and 2010 model-year retail-sold motorhomes built by the aforementioned participating manufacturers on FCCC chassis. FCCC manufactures diesel powered chassis and even offers the first-of-its-kind hybrid-electric version called ecoFRED, designed to increase fuel economy while delivering optimal power.

Qualified Fueled by Us participants receive a Visa debit card pre-loaded with $1,250 that can be used at any diesel fueling station across the country where Visa is accepted.

"Even in a tough economy, the freedom and adventure of the open road is an irresistible draw. The dream of a great road trip is the passion of many RVers and this sales event is designed to help them take a trip they might normally not be in the position to take at this time," Said Jonathan Randall, director of sales and marketing for FCCC.

RV travel has long been known as a great way to maximize travel budgets. With room for the entire family, no airline restrictions or fees to deal with, the ability to cook meals and avoid costly hotel charges, motorhome travel offers many advantages. With Freightliner Custom Chassis' latest offer of free fuel, the value is that much stronger.

Winnebago 4Q Down with Demand for Motorhomes

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (NYSE:WGO), the leading United States motor home manufacturer, today reported financial results for the Company’s fourth quarter and fiscal year ended August 29, 2009.

Revenues for the fourth quarter ended August 29, 2009 were $59.5 million versus $85.3 million for the fourth quarter last year. The Company reported an operating loss of $9.2 million for the quarter versus an operating loss of $18.9 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008. Included in the operating loss for the quarter was a non-cash charge of $855,000 related to the asset impairment of the Hampton, Iowa fiberglass facility during the quarter. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $50.2 million versus $12.7 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008. On a diluted per share basis, the Company had a net loss of $1.73 for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 versus a net loss of 44 cents for the fourth quarter last year. The net loss for the quarter included a non-cash charge of $41.1 million, or $1.41 per diluted share, related to the establishment of a full valuation allowance against its deferred tax assets. Details of this charge are discussed elsewhere in this news release. Excluding these non-cash charges, the Company’s tax-benefited net loss for the fourth quarter would have been $5.4 million, or 19 cents per diluted share.

The fourth quarter was negatively impacted by lower motor home deliveries resulting in a reduction in plant utilization. Revenues were also negatively impacted by a continuation of wholesale and retail product incentives, but benefited from a better mix of Class A diesel products. There was a positive benefit to cost of goods sold, however, from the liquidation of last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory values due to a significant reduction of inventory levels. This had the effect of decreasing gross deficit by $2.9 million.

Revenues for the 52 weeks of fiscal 2009 were $211.5 million versus $604.4 million for the 53 weeks of fiscal 2008. Net loss for fiscal 2009 was $78.8 million versus net income of $2.8 million for 2008. On a diluted per share basis, the Company had a net loss of $2.71 for fiscal 2009, versus earnings of 10 cents for 2008. Excluding non-cash charges, the Company’s tax-benefited net loss for fiscal 2009 would have been $37.2 million, or $1.28 per diluted share.

“While fiscal 2009 was one of the most challenging in our 51 year history and in the history of the RV industry, we have taken many necessary steps to preserve adequate liquidity, manage our balance sheet and costs, and maintain our ability to make investments in products and processes important to our long term growth and profitability,” said Winnebago Industries’ Chairman, CEO and President Bob Olson. “As an example, we increased our cash flow by dramatically cutting our inventories by 58 percent from the end of fiscal 2008 to the end of fiscal 2009.”

“Just as important as managing our balance sheet and costs for today’s market, however, is planning for growth once the economy recovers,” continued Olson. “Research and product development was a top priority, with over 50 percent of our lineup new or redesigned for the 2010 model year. From top to bottom, we raised the bar in creating innovative products with exciting floorplans and features with an emphasis on form, function and styling.”

According to Statistical Surveys, Inc., the retail reporting service for the RV industry, Winnebago Industries’ gained market share in the combined Class A and C markets with 19.1 percent for the first eight months of calendar 2009, compared to 18.5 percent for the same period last year.

“We are pleased with our market share gains and believe we have further opportunities to gain share going forward with our innovative new products,” said Olson. “As testament to the appeal of our new motor home offerings, our sales order backlog was 940 motor homes at August 29, 2009, an increase of approximately 58 percent compared to the end of fiscal 2008; and an increase of 146 percent from May 30, 2009, the end of our third quarter. We have seen particular strength in the backlog for our Class A gas and diesel products.”

“Nevertheless, the economic environment and the level of retail demand remain uncertain. Additionally, credit availability remains difficult on both the wholesale and retail level,” said Olson. “Floor plan lending institutions continue to manage dealer inventories very closely with an emphasis on the aging of inventory and the number of times a dealer turns his inventory each year. As a result, dealer inventory declined 54 percent during fiscal 2009, to 1,694 motor homes as of August 29, 2009. Since retail sales have been much higher than wholesale shipments throughout the past year, we believe dealer inventory is very close to reaching the bottom, and our dealer partners will need to start to replenish soon to satisfy retail demand going forward. The increase in our sales order backlog referenced above may also be a sign that the replenishment process is now beginning.”

Section Of Blue Ridge Parkway Closed

WYFF4.com
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The recent heavy rains have forced the closure of a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The area closed is between Asheville and Mount Pisgah, from the French Broad River to the Pisgah Campground Country Store.

Engineers with the Federal Highway Administration determined Wednesday that the amount of rain that has fallen, combined with the forecast of more rain, created a high risk of landslides.

There was a landslide on the slope in question in 2002 and it has been closely monitored since being repaired.

That part of the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed until further notice.

Budget cuts threaten Michigan campgrounds

Grand Traverse County is home to three state forest campgrounds. For now.

But that number could slip, as Michigan legislators search for ways to trim next year's budget.

Grand Traverse County's three state forest campgrounds -- Lake Dubonnet Rustic Campground, Arbutus No. 4 State Forest Campground and Scheck's Place State Forest Campground -- remain open, though the chopping block looms over all state resources.

Already lost for next year is The Forks State Forest Campground in Grand Traverse County, said Mary Dettloff, Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman.

The DNR closed 12 state forest campground sites last May because of budget cuts, including the eight-site, rustic campground.

Near-new Travel Trailer Burns

REGINA — A fire at a brand-new trailer at the Buffalo Lookout Campground has left its occupant homeless.

Fire crews had the blaze out within the hour, said Randy Ryba with the Regina Office of the Fire Commissioner. He described damage as 100 per cent with a dollar figure of at least $30,000.

The trailer, bought in May or June, belonged to a man in town for work at a major project, Ryba said. The owner had left about 1 1/2 hours prior to someone noticing the fire. No one else — including the man’s animals — was in the trailer at the time.

“All I do know right now is that the fire started near the back bedroom,” he said.

SIOUX CITY IA -- The city's Scenic Park Campground produced record revenue in the 2009 season. City officials say they expect the same next year.

The deposits for this picturesque riverfront campground climbed more than 10 percent over last year, rising from $182,456 in 2008 to $202,650 this year. An additional 24 camper pads, added in midsummer, attracted more daily, weekly and monthly campers.

Park City Utah RV parks report a good year

Doug Sorensen, managing partner at the Park City RV Resort across from Kimball Junction, said business has doubled for him. He used to make a lot of money selling stalls that the owners can rent out when they're not using them (like condominium nightly rentals). He hasn't sold a single stall all year, but the daily rental business is so brisk it has made up for it, he said.
Sorensen owns a park in Moab as well and has seen the same things there.
He thinks the up tick in business is because people with RV's already own them. When money is tight and they're planning a low-budget trip or vacation, they tend to use what they already have.
He's especially surprised by the increase from the European market. Despite the recession, they're taking advantage of the weak U.S. dollar.
He takes reservations for ski season and says he has bookings that would make any hotel jealous.
"They don't usually book this early for winter," he said. "But if they already have a motor home, they don't have to spend $300 a night. We also have a pool, gym and clubhouse."

Funny Car driver is home wherever he parks his motorhome.

At the end of the day, Ron Capps enjoys walking through the front door and being greeted by the smell of his wife's cooking.

Since Capps is one of the top Funny Car drivers on the NHRA circuit, he would seem to have limited chances to experience such greetings during the 24-race season.

That is not necessarily the case.

Capps, 44, has a home away from home nearby at almost every event. He owns a motorhome, a Monaco Executive, to be precise, and it has all the comforts of home, and a few comforts many houses do not have.

For Capps, the motorhome is a respite from the hubbub of the track. And for the dozen or so races his family wife Shelly, daughter Taylor (13) and son Caden (8) attends, the motorhome serves as their nesting place.

Detroit Camper & RV Show Reports Attendence Increase

The Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) successfully wrapped up the 20th Annual Fall Detroit Camper & RV Show in Novi, Michigan, at the Rock Financial Showplace last weekend with a 40 percent increase in attendance, making the show the best attended Fall Detroit Camper & RV Show since 2003. Many dealers noted a significant number of first time RV show visitors who showed interest in everything, including diesel pusher motorhomes. Campground representatives with booths in the show reported a surprising number of visitors who actually made reservations for next season. The parts and accessories section also received an abundance of traffic, with special interest in new satellite and Internet reception products specifically.

MARVAC Director Bill Sheffer was encouraged by the upbeat mood of visitors. "It's been a difficult economic year, especially in Michigan, and to see the number of potential buyers and camping enthusiasts at this year's show helps bring the whole industry's attitude up a level."

The Fall Detroit Camper & RV Show ran from September 30 to October 4. It featured over 200 new recreation vehicles on display including folding campers, motorhomes, travel trailers, truck campers and fifth wheel travel trailers. The show also featured booths showcasing parts and accessories, campground information, on site RV financing, RV rentals, an outdoor display of new RVs and a special "green" RV display sponsored by General RV and Winnebago.

Seasonal campground closures under way in Arizona

Arizona Daily Sun
Seasonal campground and day-use site closures have started on the Coconino National Forest. Some close Tuesday; others have already closed for the season. Closed campgrounds and day-use area reopen every spring.

When closed, campgrounds and day-use sites will no longer have services such as water and toilets available, and in many cases, will be gated. Some campgrounds on the Coconino, however, will remain open year-round.

Alternately, a few campgrounds on the Coconino may be used during the closure season, free of charge, as long as the roads to those campgrounds remain open. When using these areas during the off-season, campers should use the designated sites and be prepared to camp without services such as water and toilets.

Campgrounds already closed are: Ashurst Lake, Forked Pine, Double Springs, Kinnikinick, Bootlegger, Pine Flat, Blue Ridge, Moqui Group, Rock Crossing.

Campgrounds closing Oct. 13: Canyon Vista, Dairy Springs, Lakeview, Pinegrove, Bonito, Little Elden springs, Lockett Meadow, O'Leary.

Day-use areas already closed: Lower Lake Mary Picnic and Lake Mary Narrows Launch.

Day-use areas closing Oct. 13: Upper Lake Mary, sites 1 and 2.

Connecticut Doubles Fees For State Parks

MADISON — - Lawrence Hart and Tom Gilbride are both staying at Hammonasset Beach State Park and Campground. And they are definitely not happy campers.

They're angry over the doubling of park entry and camping fees that went into effect Oct. 1.

The increase, adopted by the legislature in an effort to boost revenue, means that Hart, a retiree from Waterbury who has been camping with his wife and friends at the oceanside park for 18 years, spending much of the summer there in his RV, will be paying $30 a night to stay there. The camping fee had been $15 a night.

Gilbride, 59, a visitor from New York who has been pitching a tent at the park with his wife and friends each season for 20 years or so, will pay $40 a night because he's not a Connecticut resident.

Deduct Fees & Taxes on RV Purchases from Federal Income Tax

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act permits taxpayers to take a deduction for state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase of new cars, light trucks, motor homes and motorcycles. The deduction is available on new vehicles purchased from Feb. 17, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2009. In states that don't have a sales tax, the law provides a deduction for other taxes or fees paid. This deduction is available whether or not a taxpayer itemizes deductions on Schedule A.

The deduction is limited to the taxes and fees paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of an eligible vehicle. The deduction is reduced for joint filers with modified adjusted gross incomes (MAGI) between $250,000 and $260,000 and other taxpayers with MAGI between $125,000 and $135,000. Taxpayers with higher incomes do not qualify.

Taxpayers who make qualifying new vehicle purchases this year can estimate the deduction with the help of IRS Publication 919, How Do I Adjust My Withholding? Lines 10a to 10k on Worksheet 10 take into account purchases above the $49,500 limit, as well as the reduced deductions for taxpayers at higher income levels.

Natural Falls State Park - Oklahoma

Natural Falls State Park is located just off highway 412, approximately five miles west of the Oklahoma state line. The small sign on the highway marking its whereabouts is not exactly eye-catching, so it is easy to drive by without giving a thought to stopping. When I finally paid an overdue visit, I found the park packed with plenty to offer visitors, including incredible natural beauty. In fact, the view from the bottom of the waterfall is nothing short of picturesque.

Natural Falls State Park includes a total of 122 acres of land with many RV and tent camping spaces available for rent. Tables, grills, a shower station and other amenities are included for campers. The park also has a nice indoor “reunion center” that may be rented for large group functions.

AZ county okays camping on private property

RESCOTT - The Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to recommend allowing residents to camp temporarily in recreational vehicles and travel trailers on private parcels of 10 acres or more.

It would limit camping to 10 consecutive days as many as three times a year. The vehicles may not connect to utilities and owners may not rent them to other campers. The Board of Supervisors votes on the commission's recommendation at its Nov. 5 meeting in Prescott.

Current zoning ordinances do not allow the public to camp on private property in RVs and travel trailers.

Pedal-Powered Camper may be Tiniest RV

RVs are not known for their fuel efficiency. Some can need a gallon to get just 8 miles out of town. But here’s one that goes to the other extreme.

Originally envisioned as weighing just 50 pounds, and with a pullout drawer to extend its length for sleeping; inventor Paul Elkins‘ camper was designed for maximum efficiency. It had to endure winds of 60 mph, heat of 100+ degrees. And it’s not merely fuel efficient. It uses no fuel at all.

You’d get it out of town on pedal power alone. Set up under the stars with just renewable power.

Business Good for Parks Catering to Campers Staying Closer to Home

At Ozark RV Park in Mountain View, Ark., billed as the ”Folk Music Capital of the World,” owner Andy Rutledge said the 73-site park had the best summer season since he bought the park nine years ago. ”Business has been great,” said Rutledge, whose park is host to many of the musicians who play at the community’s seven music theaters and the nearby Ozark Folk Center State Park.

The park last year added six camping cabins that have been quick to catch on. ”They do real well every weekend,” Rutledge said.

On the western tip of Lake Superior, Ogston’s RV Park, Duluth, Minn., drew a good number of visitors during the summer from the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Fall & Winter Are Prime Seasons for Camping in Desert Parks

The arrival of fall signals the annual shutdown of campgrounds in some parks so facilities can be readied for the coming winter, but in other areas, the prime season for camping is here—or coming soon.

For most visitors, summer is just too hot for pleasant camping in some parts of the country, but late fall and early winter can be the best time of the year in many of those areas. Opinions vary about what constitutes "comfortable weather," so check the current forecast before you hit the road for the following parks.

SpaceCamper: compact 5-berth Class-B

The SpaceCamper is not your normal camper van. The SpaceCamper was designed by young German designer, engineer and entrepreneur Markus Riese, the fellow who designed the first folding bicycle with suspension on both wheels (the “Birdy”) and founded German bicycle manufacturer Riese and Muller while still at school. Riese took a year off when he graduated, buying a campervan for 12 months of touring Australia on a surfing holiday. As he worked his way around the vast Australian continent, meeting many other campervan explorers, the concept of the SpaceCamper was born – to build everything a full blown much larger camper has into a T5 transporter, and to be able to reconfigure the layout so that it can be repurposed for use in multiple roles. As usual, he succeeded big time!

Camping fees at Oregon State Parks increase in year

As expected, Oregon State Parks camping and day use fees will rise in 2010, park officials said today.

The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission adopted the increases earlier this week.

Day-use fees will increase Jan. 1, 2010, from $3 to $5 per carload for a daily permit. On May 1, 2010, RV campsite rates will go up $4 per night, and tent site rates will climb $3 per night.

Parks spokesman Chris Havel said campers who visit a park between now and April 30, 2010, will pay the current lower rate, and the current rate also will be honored for reservation customers who booked sites for May 1 and later in the year.
