'Motor Home City' Rises in Atlanta

The New Year's Eve party began Tuesday morning in Georgia's newest (but temporary) metropolis, Motor Home City, just north of the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta.

Dozens of Virginia Tech and Tennessee football fans drove their huge homes on wheels here to celebrate their teams making it into Thursday night's Chick-Fil-A Bowl. They've pitched tents next to their motor homes, set up kitchens, and spread out across their asphalt playing field talking some sports trash to each other, and more or less observing a pre-game truce with laughter and shared food and drink.

RV Industry back on the road to success

Wholesale shipments of motorhomes have finally outpaced the prior year, putting an especially hard-hit segment of the recreational vehicle industry into positive territory for the first time since October 2007.

The number of motorized units sent from manufacturers to dealers' lots rose 50 percent in November compared to November 2008 totals, according to data released by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association on Tuesday. Year-to-date, 2009 motorhome shipments trail the previous year by 58.1 percent.

In addition, the figures show that shipments are "slightly greater" than retail sales, said Mac Bryan, vice president of administration at the RVIA. That is good news, he said, since the upswing indicates that not only is financing easing both for wholesale and retail but also that dealers are feeling confident sales will improve and they will need to have more units in stock to meet demand.

Thor made the loan to be used for working capital by FreedomRoads LLC, whose 47 dealerships across the country accounted for 15 percent of Thor’s RV sales in fiscal year 2009.

Principal on the 12 percent loan is due at the end of the next four years with the majority — $7.4 million — due in 2014. Interest payments are scheduled to be made quarterly.

Experts predict full recovery for RV industry in 2010

Despite its worst sales year since 1982, those in the recreational-vehicle industry say they have reasons to be optimistic.

RV experts say 2009 will be remembered as the year the industry bottomed out during this recession, and they're looking forward to the recovery in 2010.

The past two years have been brutal for the RV industry, which took hit after hit in 2008 as companies in the Elkhart area slashed thousands of jobs.

Elkhart County, where roughly 60 percent of the nation's RVs are made, saw unemployment shoot to nearly 19 percent in March.

Then in the summer the storm showed signs of breaking.

Sioux Falls & Campground Owners Reach Compromise

The months-long process of revising Sioux Falls' ordinance covering campgrounds has produced a workable compromise that should benefit campground owners and protect tenants.

Initially, city officials proposed to set a 180-day limit on campground stays, and we supported that plan.

Campground owners, however, opposed any limit, mostly because many visitors now use campgrounds year-round.

The amenities that many recreational vehicles and campers have these days allow for more extended stays.

The final version of the agreement, which recently passed the council, eliminates limits on campground stays and sets changes that correspond with state health guidelines.

Winter Texans take Christmas gifts to Valley families

MISSION TX— Victor and Maria Vega had only $3 to spend on each of their five children this Christmas.

Usually, their children’s teachers at Leo J. Leo Elementary School stop by their rusted, run-down home on Canadiana Lane in Mission on Christmas Eve to drop off a few presents.

This year, Christmas will be a little more memorable than in years past.

A caravan of Winter Texans from Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort arrived at the Vega residence about 1 p.m. Thursday bearing a tractor-trailer full of gifts, food and the other items.

Worst of the recession is over for RV industry

The RV Industry has long been an indicator for the economy. Attendance has been on the rise at national RV shows and positive sales numbers reported. To confirm the turn in the economy, New York Stock Exchange Chief Economist Emeritus William Freund stated in his seminar at the National RV Trade Show “The worst of the Great Recession is behind your industry.” Freund predicted a total economic recovery in three to five years with consumer interest gearing towards affordability and innovations with baby boomers contributing to the recovery.

The RV lifestyle has become the affordable means for family travel. While extravagant vacations have declined, families are hitting the road in a motorhome. Purchasing an RV is an investment in family and in the affordability of future get-aways.

“There is no doubt the last few years have been rough on the RV Industry, says Gerard Pedata of Pedata RV Center, “however, with a focus on customer service, cost-effective options for customers, and an ability to listen to what the consumer wants, we are confident a full recovery is right around the corner.”

Power cut at Yellowstone campground blamed on Inadequate service

Billings Gazette
More than 300 campsites at Yellowstone National Park’s Fishing Bridge campground won’t have electricity next summer.

Xanterra Parks and Resorts, the concession operator of the campsite, decided to cut the inadequate service available while negotiating with the National Park Service about upgrading the system.

“It was built in the early ’60s,” said Jim McCaleb, general manager for Xanterra. “Over the years, with the continuing heavy demand by RVs, the system is incapable of handling today’s RVs’ needs.”

McCaleb said the current service at each site is only 20 amps. If upgraded, each site would have a 60-amp service, he said.

“It’s a huge upgrade,” he said. “We’re working with the National Park Service to see what it would take.”

McCaleb said if everything can be worked out the electricity would only be cut for this coming season with the upgrades installed in time for 2011 campers.

The park is north of Knox Butte Road and across from the hotels near the Linn County Fair & Expo Center.

He was seen in an ambulance at the scene but declined further treatment.

Arizona State Parks may be put on life support

Proposed budget adjustments that are on the table at the special session of the State Legislature will cut more than $9 million of Parks funds, leaving the agency with only about $10 million in its 2010 budget.

That's less than 30 percent of the agency's normal funding and not enough to continue park operations beyond this fiscal year.

Governor Brewer and the Legislature are seeking $205 million in cuts to mitigate a deficit estimated to be $1.5 billion. The proposed cuts to State Parks would provide just 4 percent of their goal, while shutting down the Park's annual contribution to the Arizona economy of more than $266 million.

This result also negates 10 months of work by the Governor's Task Force on Sustainable State Parks, which recommended in October that State Parks be funded with a fee on Arizona license plate renewals in exchange for free entry to the parks.

The cuts will force major reductions in Parks staff and closure of more than half of the State's 30 parks this fiscal year. The resulting loss of Park revenue is projected to leave the Parks System with no money to start the next fiscal year, July 1, 2010. The next step will be to shut down the entire system and dispose of Parks properties, returning most of them to their original owners.

If Legislatures could keep parks open to Arizonans through 50 years of prior downturns, wars, gas crises and political turmoil, surely current lawmakers can find the revenues to do so--especially given the great economic value, popularity and intrinsic worth of our state parks.

RV dealer offering smaller vehicles

Bend, Oregon,
In 2007, Big Country RV had its largest sales year ever.

In July 2008, his dealership’s sales dropped substantially.

“It was like a cliff,” said owner Gary Craven, who wouldn’t disclose sales figures.

He recalled a perfect storm of record-high gas prices and a deepening recession that was trimming credit and eroding consumer confidence. Craven said he and his staff “moved aggressively” to reduce inventory, adjust his product line to feature smaller RVs and beef up the dealership’s training and customer service. Also, several employees were let go.

The big bus-sized motor homes, referred to in the industry as Class A RVs, get roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon and cost around $200,000, Craven said. As Craven moved those off his lots, he didn’t replace them, opting for smaller motor homes and less expensive, towable RVs.

This state-of-the-art rating system is the backbone of the Woodall’s directory, providing RVers and campers with unbiased insight in a format that is easy to use and understand. Propane Leak Cause of Motorhome Fire

CAMAS VALLEY — A Camas Valley resident lost his home to a fire Friday evening, officials said Saturday.

Camas Valley Rural Fire District responded to a 5:18 p.m. report of a motor home fire at 1300 Upper Camas Road, district Fire Chief Clayton Casteel said.

“It was pretty much fully engulfed when they got there,” he said. He said firefighters put the fire out in about 20 minutes.

The motor home was a total loss as were its contents. Neil Webster had been staying in the motor home while working as a caretaker on the property, Casteel said.

A fire marshal had been to the scene and had determined the fire was caused by a leak in a line that ran from an outside propane tank into the motor home.

RV campers help spread holiday cheer

Quinebagoes do not believe in roughing it while camping out. Rather than a tent and sleeping bag, they camp in heated or air-conditioned bliss with all the comforts of home — from full bathrooms and bedrooms to kitchens and living rooms with cable television.

The camping group also believes in sharing the wealth and sent a generous donation to the Telegram & Gazette Santa Fund, along with a note from club treasurer John A. Hatch of Lakeshore Drive in Spencer. He said, “The Quinebagoes of Massachusetts would like to donate to the Santa Fund. Merry Christmas!”

Mr. Tonken said the Quinebagoes often make charitable donations, explaining that the Quinebagoes are a camping club, which is open to any owner of a Winnebago or Itasca motor home. An Itasca is made by the same company as the Winnebago, but has “nicer inside detail.”

First, the recreational vehicle owners join the Winnebago Itasca Travelers Club, which makes them eligible to join the Quinebagoes in Central or Western Massachusetts or to join the Bradford Brigade in Eastern Massachusetts.

“Some of us also belong to the Pilgrim Winnies state club,” he said. Massachusetts members are also free to join the Rhodey Winnies, state club of Rhode Island, and the Connecticut Winnies state club.

RVers at Disney’s Fort Wilderness add rustic touch to holiday celebration

Walt Disney World is renowned for its extravagant holiday displays during the holidays.

From the Osborne lights at the Hollywood Studios, to the giant Christmas tree at Epcot, almost every corner of the resort brings a bit of that wintertime feeling to Central Florida.
But if you get just a bit further away from the holiday glitz of the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, there is a 700-acre woodland space that offers a more rustic feel for the holidays — the Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Originally conceived by Walt Disney himself, with the original plans for Disney World, the campground is a mixture of wilderness cabins, RV campsites and tent sites.

Some of the most magical displays you will find anywhere at Walt Disney World can be found amongst the RV campers at the campsites at Fort Wilderness.

Many of the campers in the RV section of the campground, are seasonal guests, Sam Gates, a manager at Fort Wilderness, said.
“They have their favorite campsites, that they are at year after year,” he said.

And those RV’s usually aren’t just packed with food and other items you would pack for a vacation. Almost all of the winter regulars bring with them dozens of holiday inflatables, usually with a Disney theme, that seemingly occupy just about every square inch of their campsites.

Golf cart parade spreads Christmas cheer at RV Resort

MANATEE FL — The Flintstones waved. A stagecoach rolled down the street. Santa Claus spread cheer. A red Christmas Elvis greeted people.

Those were just a few of the appearances made Saturday night in the 11th annual Horseshoe Cove Golf Cart Parade.

Approximately 54 golf carts, many lit with Christmas lights, winded down the streets as residents — and some of their grandchildren — watched at Horseshoe Cove RV Resort near Caruso Road and 53rd Avenue East.

“I thought it was great. It’s amazing what they can do with a golf cart,” said Eva Solick, of Orlando, who was visiting family members.

Residents inside the park have made it a tradition of decking out their carts for the parade that spans a three-day period.

NASCAR & Partners plan 500 campgrounds

NASCAR plans to roll out up to 500 branded campgrounds in the United States in a move to build consumer loyalty to the U.S. auto racing circuit and attract a new generation of fans.

The sports organization, known for its three stock car and pickup truck racing series, said on Friday it is teaming with Morgan RV Resorts and real estate investor and developer Silver Companies to open 13 locations this spring. The goal is to expand over the next decade.

"The NASCAR fan is an avid camper. Some numbers have put it over 60 percent are RVers. It's a perfect fit," Robert Moser, chief executive of NASCAR RV Resorts and co-owner of Morgan RV resorts, said in a telephone interview. "When you drive through our properties, you see that there's avid NASCAR fans.

"It's going to be a lot bigger for NASCAR than everybody's thinking right now," he added, saying the new facilities would introduce the sport to millions of consumers. "NASCAR and camping, you can't get more American than that."

States have Snowbirds on their Census radar

Minnesota's efforts to count its traveling residents during the 2000 Census were modest.

Barbara Ronningen, one of the state's demographers, says she gave her father, Sidney Ronningen, and other Minnesotans who went south for the winter fliers to hand out at gatherings of the state's snowbirds at annual picnics in Arizona and Florida.

"We weren't in danger of losing a congressional seat back then," she said.

The 2010 Census is different. The state stands to lose one of its eight congressional seats because population growth has lagged behind other states. So, Ronningen says, it is working aggressively with communities and organizations to make sure each head is counted, whether in Minneapolis or Mesa.

Those who live in their home state the majority of the year but occupy a winter residence in another state when Census forms are mailed in March should follow these guidelines to be counted as residents in their home states:

Leave the rest of the form blank, but write "usual residence elsewhere" on it so the Census Bureau will know why zero was entered.

If no one is staying at their home state residence, snowbirds should wait until they return home to complete the form sent to that residence.

If a form hasn't been received, a Census taker is expected to contact residents between May and June.

Ohio state parks had more overnight stays in '09

Funding for state parks is dropping, but attendance at Ohio-owned campgrounds, lodges and cottage isn't.

The number of overnight stays in state parks through November was 632,533, an increase of about 8 percent from the same period in 2008, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported yesterday.

In that period, the average length of a stay at state-owned facilities increased 14 percent, from 2.56 nights to 2.91 nights.

The state's 74 parks have nine resort lodges, 518 cottages and 57 campgrounds with more than 9,000 camping sites. Camping is the reason for the majority of these stays, consistently accounting for more than 90 percent of all state-park overnight stays in the past five years.

Winnebago Reports Improved First Quarter

Revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 ended November 28, 2009 were $81.0 million, an increase of 16.7 percent, versus $69.4 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. The Company reported an operating loss of $6.0 million for the quarter, versus an operating loss of $16.9 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Net loss for the first quarter was $1.3 million versus $9.6 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. On a diluted per share basis, the Company had a net loss of 5 cents for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 versus a net loss of 33 cents for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. The net loss for the first quarter reflected the positive impact of $4.9 million in tax benefits associated with additional fiscal year 2009 net operating loss carryback due to recent tax law changes; however, no tax benefits have been recorded on first quarter fiscal 2010 pre-tax losses which are not immediately subject to refund.

“We are extremely pleased to see an increase in revenues, as well as posting a small gross profit in our first quarter,” said Winnebago Industries’ Chairman, CEO and President Bob Olson. “As difficult as this recession has been for Winnebago Industries and the entire RV industry, we believe the worst may be over.”

Winnebago Industries’ sales order backlog was 1,521 motor homes at November 28, 2009, an increase of 350 percent compared to the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2009. This also represents an increase of 62 percent from August 29, 2009, the end of our fourth quarter. “The increased demand for our products is particularly noteworthy since it is seasonally very unusual to have a significant increase at this time of year,” said Olson. “We have seen particular strength in the backlog for our Class A gas and diesel products. Due to the escalation of our sales order backlog, we have increased our production levels and during the first quarter of fiscal 2010, our employment grew by approximately 350 employees.”

“While the economic environment, the availability of credit and the level of retail demand remain tenuous, we believe that dealer inventory has finally bottomed out,” said Olson. “Inventory of Winnebago, Itasca and ERA products on our dealers’ lots declined 52 percent to 1,567 motor homes as of November 28, 2009 versus 3,269 motor homes as of the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Retail sales have been much higher than wholesale shipments throughout the past 18 months, providing further opportunity for added growth in the future through inventory replenishment even without an increase in retail demand.”

According to Statistical Surveys, Inc., the retail reporting service for the RV industry, Winnebago Industries’ gained market share in the combined Class A and C markets with 19.3 percent for the first 10 months of calendar 2009, compared to 18.3 percent for the same period last year.

“We had an excellent reception of our new 2010 products at the recent RVIA National RV Trade Show in Louisville, KY,” continued Olson. “We were pleased with the increased level of orders placed during the show as compared to last year. Many dealers also indicated they are interested in carrying fewer manufacturers’ product lines on their lots, with the intention to partner with manufacturers who are financially stable and able to provide product, sales and service support for the long-term.”

Special Session Bill will affect Arizona State Parks

House Bill 2001 proposes reductions and sweeps of $9.2 million from conservation funds such as the State Parks gate fees, donations, State Lake Improvement Fund and Heritage Funds. The consequence of the sweeps will be the closure of State Parks causing an additional $266 million revenue loss to these rural communities by reducing leisure business generated by the 2.3 million park visitors.

"These sweeps will be catastrophic to the agency and will eliminate any hope of us operating the system or contributing to the economies of these rural communities," said Reese Woodling, the Arizona State Parks Board Chairman. "If this bill passes we would need to reduce staff by approximately 75 of our remaining 218 employees and that step would force park closures. Also, these cuts are based on the Parks being open and earning over $8 million from gate fees which will not happen with Parks closed."

House Bill 2001 is seeking $205 million in state government cuts to begin to address a deficit currently estimated at $1.5 billion. The proposed cuts to State Parks would equate to almost 5% of their solution, while State Parks currently receives less than 1/10 of 1% of the overall state budget. Additionally, State Parks receives NO money from the state General Fund, however the impact of the park system on the state's economy is more than $266 million.

Florida Snowbirds Show Christmas Spirit

Each year, Polk County Sheriff’s COPS (Community Oriented Policing) deputies countywide gather toys and donations from residents and fellow PCSO members, in hopes of being able to provide needy children they come into contact with in their areas of responsibility with a special treat during the holidays, according to the Lake Wales News.

The toys that are collected, wrapped, and distributed by the COPS deputies are often the only Christmas presents these children receive.

This year, the residents at Sanlan RV Park in Lakeland exemplified the true meaning of Christmas, humbling the COPS deputies who have participated in this event year after year, noted sheriff’s spokesman Carrie Eleazer.

“These generous men and women, many of whom are Snow Birds and not year-round Polk County residents, donated enough toys and money to bring smiles upon the faces of over 30 children,” Eleazer said. “In fact, these residents gave so much, the COPS deputies extended offers to other deputies throughout the county – if deputies outside of the south Lakeland area knew of children elsewhere who were going to “go without” this year, there were plenty of toys to go around to those children as well, thanks to the Sanlan RV Park elves.”

Campground dedicated at Oklahoma's Lake Wister State Park

The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department dedicated the renovated Victor Area campground at Lake Wister State Park on Dec. 12.
The Victor Area campground at Lake Wister was destroyed as a result of a flood and high lake levels in March of 2008. The total cost of the project was approximately $262,000 and it was funded with Capital Improvement Funds.

“The Victor Area is a popular spot at Lake Wister State Park,” said Senator Kenneth Corn, D-Poteau. “Lake Wister offers sporting enthusiasts some of the finest outdoor recreational opportunities in Oklahoma with beautiful views of the scenic Ouachita Mountains, and the campground is an important asset.”

The campground renovations include construction and renovation of 58 RV campsites, campsite amenities and associated utility systems. Campsite amenities include lantern hangers, 50 amp hook-ups, 16 new concrete paved pads, grills, concrete tables, water and sewer connections at the sites and new gravel approaches and asphalt roads throughout the area. The renovations also include repairs to the shoreline of Lake Wister due to the flood damage.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park a Success

Twice as many visitors, compared to last year.

That is the sign that Cheyenne Mountain State Park is at long last a success, said Dean Winstanley, director of Colorado State Parks.

The number of people visiting the park jumped from 66,700 in 2008 to 151,100 so far this year.
“And I don’t think we’ve seen visitor numbers top out yet. The word is getting out still about that park,” he said.

TravelCenters of America Opens New I-5 Locations

Tejon Ranch Co. and its partner, TravelCenters of America, today join with Kern County civic and community leaders to celebrate the grand opening of California’s newest TA travel center. The $25 million retail facility is located within Tejon Industrial Complex (TIC) at the Laval Road exit of Interstate 5, just south of the Highway 99 junction. This strategic site is positioned to serve the approximately 121,000 commercial and passenger vehicles passing the location each day on California’s most vital north-south corridor.

“Tejon Ranch is committed to quality, and the new TA travel center is a perfect example of that commitment,” said Robert A. Stine, President and CEO of Tejon Ranch Co. “This new facility represents the collective efforts of Tejon Ranch and our partners at TravelCenters of America to provide a quality guest experience for motorists and professional drivers on both sides of Tejon Industrial Complex.”

“We are extremely proud to continue our long standing partnership with Tejon Ranch with the opening of this newest TA travel center,” said Thomas O’Brien, President and CEO of TravelCenters of America. “This state of the art facility is an example of TA’s taking its industry’s lead position in providing the most comprehensive and diverse services and the best hospitality on the interstate for motorists and professional truck drivers alike.”

“The continued investment of Tejon Ranch and its world-class partners demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to Kern County,” said Richard Chapman, president and CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation. “Tejon Ranch’s travel centers provide local construction and permanent job opportunities for our community. They are also an important component of the county’s travel and tourism economy, collecting sales and gas tax revenue from the millions of travelers using I-5, providing a critical economic stimulus for Kern County in these challenging times.”

The new TA Travel Center features significant amenities for consumer motorists, including: a 24-pump Chevron gas station; two food courts featuring quick serve restaurant offerings from Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway and Popeye’s Chicken, and abundant, clean restroom facilities. The new center also includes a well-stocked convenience store featuring a TA Café Express, the "grab and go" food and beverage concept offering customers a wide selection of tasty breakfast sandwiches, pastries, fresh deli sandwiches, gourmet coffees, cappuccinos and hot chocolates.

Professional drivers will find the TA facilities cater to their truck repair and maintenance needs with a four-bay truck service center staffed by highly-trained, ASE-certified technicians that is open 24-hours, seven days a week. Also located in the shop building is a deli and retail store. Other conveniences at the site include eight diesel lanes, a 221-space truck parking area, emergency road service through RoadSquad, a TV room featuring a surround sound system and a 60” plasma TV, a game room, Interstate WiFi throughout the facility, CAT Scales, ten private showers, and much more.

“All of our travel centers at Tejon Industrial Complex are state-of-the-art facilities, and utilize new technologies to reduce diesel emissions, conserve energy, recycle wastewater and provide efficient freeway connections to reduce congestion,” said Barry Hibbard, Vice President of Commercial and Industrial Development for Tejon Ranch. “By offering clean, inviting, modern facilities, Tejon Industrial Complex excels in serving the needs of both the professional drivers employed by our world-class tenants as well as travelers on I-5.”

The new travel center replaces an existing TA travel center at TIC that was located adjacent to the development site on the east side of the freeway. Now that the new center is operational, the former TA facility will be razed and its site prepared for future development of additional commercial space. On the western side of the freeway, TIC already features more than 60-acres of retail offerings, including: a Petro Travel Plaza with Iron Skillet Restaurant, Chevron, Best Western Hotel, In-N-Out Burger, Starbucks, Panda Express, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s.

Airstream Doubles Travel Trailer Produxtion

Airstream, a leading recreational vehicle manufacturer in North America, announced today that it has increased its production by 25% since October in order to meet growing market demand. Furthermore, the company is scheduled to expand production by another 25% in January.

In addition to doubling its net output in five months, Airstream’s production backlog has also more than tripled since last year. As a result, Airstream will expand its production workforce by 35% to support the boost in production and demand.

Despite the adverse economic climate in the RV industry over the last 18 months, Airstream’s recent performance may well indicate a turnaround for the industry as a whole. Historically, the RV industry has also served as an indicator for the general health of the overall economy.

“Like any other industry, ours took a significant hit over the last couple of years,” said Bob Wheeler, CEO of Airstream. “As difficult as it was to streamline our operations during this period, we now feel optimistic that Airstream is back on the road to recovery.”

Wheeler also noted that dealer confidence for the upcoming selling season appears to be strong and that lenders seem more willing to provide commercial credit to the industry as a whole.

Two RV makers rise from the ashes

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Fleetwood and Monaco booths at the 47th annual National RV Trade Show was that both manufacturers even had displays. Just nine months earlier, the two companies had filed for bankruptcy and announced they were looking for buyers, but in Louisville, with booths positioned at opposite ends of the exhibition hall, they have new owners and a new inflow of capital.

Once towering giants, Fleetwood and Monaco may represent the boom, the bust and the uncertain recovery of the recreational vehicle industry.

The financial turbulence experienced by Fleetwood and Monaco landed the pair on Robert Salomon's list of Notable Bankruptcies of 2009. Salomon, an associate professor of management and organizations at New York University, explained that he included the RV makers because they are sizable companies that failed, both had thousands of employees and multiple facilities in different states.

However, he was not surprised the manufacturers stumbled given the motorhomes they produce were affected most harshly by the economic downturn as consumers curtailed spending on discretionary items.

What did surprise the academic was how quickly the RV divisions of Fleetwood and Monaco were purchased.

Oregon state park fees go up in 2010

Oregon state park fees for camping and day use will take a relatively big jump next year, but future increases are likely to be more incremental.

It's the system's first fee increase in 13 years.

The desire for smaller but more frequent increases came out of the public input process that resulted, in late September, in a $4-a-night camping increase for RVers and $3-a-night increase for tenters.

For parks that charge day-use fees, the price per vehicle will rise next year from $3 to $5.

RV Rentals & Campgrounds Still Available for Winter Olympcis

As Vancouver prepares to welcome the world for the 2010 Olympics and boasts sold out hotel rooms and exorbitant lodging rates, Go RVing Canada reports that RV rentals and campgrounds are still an available and much more affordable option for visitors.

"Do not abandon hopes of going to the 2010 Olympics if you do not yet have accommodations planned," says Go RVing Canada spokesperson Catherine Fortin LeFaivre. "Many Vancouver-area RV dealerships still have RV units available for rent at very reasonable prices during the Olympic period - but they are booking fast."

Most Vancouver-area hotels have been sold out for months in anticipation of the Winter Olympic Games, and those still available are advertising rates in the range of $600 and over per night for double occupancy. In contrast, winterized RV units are available for approximately $200 to $300 per night and can generally accommodate four to six people.

"RVing during the Olympics is a great and affordable way to experience the Games," says Fortin LeFaivre. "Not only will you be able to experience the beautiful B.C. winter outdoors, but you will also be at the heart of the Olympic buzz as many campgrounds are in proximity to Olympic venues."

Although campgrounds in and around the Vancouver-area are booking quickly, spots are still available for approximately $40-75 a night, depending on proximity to Olympic venues. Many of these campgrounds offer convenient shuttles to such popular destinations as downtown Vancouver and Skytrain stations.

In addition to saving money on accommodations, RVing will also save Olympic-goers on food costs, since RV units are equipped for food preparation and spare tourists the expense of eating out three times a day.

Go RVing Canada recently released the results of a study, conducted by PKF Consulting, which found that typical RV vacations are up to 75 per cent less expensive per day than any other type of family trip, regardless of trip duration, distance, or location.

For more information on RVing, and on where to rent an RV and book a campground during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, please visit www.gorving.ca.

Flooding Spurs Alabama RV Park Evacuation

Bill Hare finished decorating his recreational vehicle for Christmas on Wednesday night, settling in for the holidays that he plans to spend at McFarland Park in Florence, Alabama.

Thursday afternoon, he was stowing the decorations and preparing to flee the area as floodwater from the Tennessee River began to threaten the park's campground.

"I just put my Christmas tree up and now I've got to take it down," Hare said.

The Tennessee River was expected to begin spilling over its banks at the park Thursday night, prompting an evacuation of the campground earlier in the day.

A flood warning is in effect for areas along the Tennessee River in the Shoals until Sunday.

Judge orders Florida Resort closed

A circuit court judge ruled Thursday that the Key Largo Ocean Resort RV park must shut down by Jan. 15, giving residents there about a month to find new homes.

Judge Luis Garcia said he had toured the park at mile marker 94.8 two days earlier and cited public safety as his primary reason for ordering it closed. He said a high number of building code and safety violations were apparent on the 22-acre oceanfront property, including propane tanks installed dangerously close to homes, derelict boats and cars that would hamper access by fire trucks and other emergency vehicles, and poor construction materials and methods that Garcia compared to a child's tree house.

Chief Assistant Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger said property owners and residents of the resort have had ample warnings and time to make corrections.

RVing volunteers help make season bright

Charleston Post Courier - Charleston SC
Nita and Larry Ash had been roaming state to state, campsite to campsite, when during a Lowcountry stayover in 2000, they saw the light.

Not just one light — actually more than a million. The Ashes, retirees who sold their Greenville home to travel thousands of miles each year in their RV, discovered the annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park.

The show and the people who put it on made such an impression on Larry and Nita that they decided to not only come back each fall, but to also become volunteers who help set up the show, put it on and take it down.

The park's 124-site campground is filled every fall with RVs that bring in fans of the light show, including about 20 couples who serve as volunteers for the event. Campground space is sold out every fall — a full year in advance — said campground operations manager Elizabeth Harlan.

Texas Motor Speedway To Add Family RV Campground

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 8, 2009) – Texas Motor Speedway will once again expand its fan amenities with the addition of a family RV campground area that will be in place for the 2010 race season.

Texas Motor Speedway will utilize a four-acre tract on the northeast corner of the property to carve out a 158-space camping area that will cater solely to families. The family campground area will be completely fenced in and feature reserved spaces, around-the-clock presence by the Fort Worth Police Department, 10 p.m. noise curfew and zero tolerance policy for disruptive behavior of any sort.

The pricing also is family friendly at $350 per year or $200 for each NASCAR race weekend and $75 for the IZOD IndyCar Series weekend, making it the least expensive reserved RV campground area that Texas Motor Speedway offers.

The season package includes a reserved space for the April 15-18 Samsung Mobile 500 (NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide, ARCA Racing Series), June 3-5 Texas 550k (IZOD IndyCar Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series) and Nov. 4-7 Lone Star 500 (NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Camping World Truck Series). Campers are permitted to load in the Saturday prior for the two NASCAR weekends (April 10, Oct. 30) and the Wednesday of race week (June 2) for the IZOD IndyCar Series race week.

“Some of our fans with families wanted a camping area with a bit more peace and quiet so we decided to provide an area to meet their needs for all three of our race weekends,” Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. “We also made the pricing family friendly with it being the least expensive reserved campground offer we have on property.”

Reservations in the new area will be available beginning 9 a.m. Wednesday by calling the Texas Motor Speedway ticket office at (817) 215-8500.

An RV, a dog, a fire and a few Samaritans

On the evening of Nov. 25, our motor home caught fire. At this point we are not sure if it is a write-off, but that really isn't relevant to this tale. This is a story about the kindness of many Bakersfield good Samaritans and their willingness to help and even risk life and limb for complete strangers.

My wife, Sue, and I and our little dog, Joey, are full-time RVers and although we hail from Victoria, British Columbia, where I retired after 33 years in the Canadian Navy, our motor home is our home.

We arrived in Bakersfield and parked in the Rosedale Highway Wal-Mart parking lot around 5 p.m., planning to do a little shopping, dine and rest for the night. We had just received our dinner at the Original Roadhouse Grill when our server informed us of the fire.

Forest Service may reduce campground discount for seniors, disabled

The U.S. Forest Service wants to eliminate its long-standing half-off discount for seniors and the disabled at federal campgrounds run by private companies. Concessioners now operate most of the agency's developed campsites.

"It doubles the cost, but psychologically, it's just irritating," said George Hermach of Eugene, who with his wife, Ruth, has worn out three Volkswagen vans and an Airstream trailer camping around Oregon.

"We find that commercial campgrounds are pretty expensive now, so we've always generally camped on Forest Service campgrounds and national parks," said George, 87.

Go RVing Doubles Media Budget Creates New TV Spots for 2010

RV Pro Magazine
Anticipated growth in RV production will enable Go RVing to invest twice as much in advertising in 2010, further boosting the momentum of industry recovery, officials with the RV Industry Association revealed during the annual Outlook 2010 breakfast.

Animated TV commercials with the same timely “Go Affordably, Go RVing” theme as the print ads and a bold new look and theme song are expected to capture a new audience for Go RVing in 2010, according to RVIA officials.

Launching in mid-February, the campaign will introduce Go RVing’s “Ambassadors of Affordability,” animals from the popular “What Will You Discover” print ads animated with voices and cutting-edge special effects, to communicate RV value messages.

Four new 30-second television spots were produced, combining existing photography from the Go RVing print ads with shots of current model RVs, Gary LaBella, RVIA vice president and chief marketing officer, informed attendees at the annual Outlook 2010 breakfast. Lighter, fuel-efficient, attractively priced RVs are featured to support the affordability theme of the ads, he noted.

Jayco May Install Fuel Cells in Select 2011 Travel Trailers

RV Pro magazine

Jayco is partnering with SFC Smart Fuel Cell to investigate the feasibility of putting fuel cells in select lightweight Jayco trailers, potentially in 2011 models. The two companies announced their research and market alliance during the National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky., this week.

SFC Smart Fuel Cell, based in Brunnthal, Germany, already supplies fuel cell technology to 48 European-based RV manufacturers either as a standard OEM feature or optional accessory. The company reports it has sold 15,000 units thus far.

Jayco and Smart Fuel Cell have established a joint research and market development alliance that is looking at putting SFC EFOY fuel cells in new, lightweight Jayco trailers.

The EFOY fuel cell series consist of three models with a charging capacity of 900 to 2,200 watt hours per day, depending upon individual power requirements. The fuel cells would work in conjunction with the trailer’s existing battery system as a hybrid power system. Powered by methanol, the EFOY system generates emission-free power and makes virtually no noise.

There are more than 1 million lights on the grounds of the campground, 8425 Highway 38, ready to be seen by car, on a drive through the park. The family spent about five weeks installing the light display, which opened to the public on Thanksgiving Day.

Winter is perfect time to check out Everglades Park

An impulsive trip to the Anhinga Trail last week provided Rich and Rachel Peine with plenty to see. The couple spotted herons, anhingas, cormorants and two eagles.

"It was a beautiful day," said Rich Peine of Key Largo. "So we decided to take a little trip here."

Park rangers are hoping more than birds will flock to the park. Last year, 822,118 people visited the 1.5-million acre park -- the lowest attendance in 13 years.

But documentary filmmaker Ken Burns may help out. He featured the sprawling South Florida park as part of his six-part, 12-hour PBS series, The National Parks: America's Best Idea, that aired in September.

Those who want to camp can drive their RVs or pitch their tents at the Long Pine Key campground, six miles from the Coe Visitor Center or at the Flamingo campground near the Flamingo Visitor Center on the shores of Florida Bay.

Nightly fees are $16 per site at either campground. Reservations are not accepted except for group camping at Long Pine. But at Flamingo, reservations are accepted and strongly recommended.
