Push to send FEMA trailers to Haiti stirs backlash

INDIANAPOLIS—The trailer industry and lawmakers are pressing the government to send Haiti thousands of potentially formaldehyde-laced trailers left over from Hurricane Katrina—an idea denounced by some as a crass and self-serving attempt to dump inferior American products on the poor.

"Just go ahead and sign their death certificate," said Paul Nelson of Coden, Ala., who contends his mother died because of formaldehyde fumes in a FEMA trailer.

The 100,000 trailers became a symbol of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's bungled response to Katrina. The government had bought the trailers to house victims of the 2005 storm, but after people began falling ill, high levels of formaldehyde, a chemical that is used in building materials and can cause breathing problems and perhaps cancer, were found inside. Many of the trailers have sat idle for years, and many are damaged.

The U.S. Agency for International Development, which is coordinating American assistance in Haiti, has expressed no interest in sending the trailers to the earthquake-stricken country. FEMA spokesman Clark Stevens declined to comment on the idea.

Haitian Culture and Communications Minister Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said Thursday she had not heard of the proposal but added: "I don't think we would use them. I don't think we would accept them."

In a Jan. 15 letter to FEMA, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said the trailers could be used as temporary shelter or emergency clinics.

"While I continue to believe that these units should not be used for human habitation, I do believe that they could be of some benefit on a short-term, limited basis if the appropriate safeguards are provided," he wrote.

Battle Creek RV Show this weekend

Recreational vehicles will never go out of style, but some travelers have had to change the way they use them in recent years.

An economic recession and high gas prices caused RV sales to plummet in 2009. But according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, shipments to retailers increased 2 percent in December and are up a whopping 150 percent compared with a year ago.

And this weekend, hundreds of motor homes, mini-homes, fifth wheels, travel trailers and tent campers are on display at the 2010 Battle Creek RV Show at Kellogg Arena.

Centerville, Ohio: new law for keeping RV at home

The last few hundred Centerville residents who park recreational vehicles on their property under old city rules have until July 15 to meet new standards passed in 2008.

The city has been gradually updating its rules on RV storage for 20 years, but existing owners had been grandfathered in under old rules, a practice that will end this year, according to Jennifer Wilder, assistant to the city manager.

The primary rules in effect for all owners July 15 are that all types of RVs stored outdoors must be parked on a paved surface, must meet size limitations, must be located in a side yard and be screened from neighboring properties by fencing or trees.

The policy affects all types of recreational vehicles, from motor homes, travel trailers and campers, to boats and personal watercraft, to horse trailers or any other utility trailer.

SANTA CLAUS, Ind. — More than 2,200 seasonal jobs are up for grabs here as Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari and two adjacent attractions, the Lake Rudolph RV Campground & Resort and the Santa Claus Christmas Store, begin taking applications in about a week.

Most of the jobs will be at the theme park which is expecting a record number of applicants for its 2,100 positions, according to Brandon Berg, director of human resources.

Holiday World plans job fairs Feb. 6-7, Feb. 11 and Feb. 13.

Meanwhile, Lake Rudolph and the town’s Christmas Store are planning a separate job fair Feb. 6 for 120 positions ranging from retail and welcome staff to lifeguards, security, shuttle drivers, housekeeping, maintenance and grounds crew. It will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 6 at the American Legion on Indiana 245 and some of those jobs may require applicants older than 16.

Berg said applying at Holiday World will be a two-step process this year: “The first step is to submit an online application via our Web site (www.HolidayWorld.com/Jobs) and the second step is to attend one of our job fairs.”

Lost Campers USA to Offer Campervan Rentals in L.A.

SAN FRANCISCO CA - Lost Campers USA, a San Francisco-based campervan rental company, has successfully served budget-conscious, outdoor enthusiast travelers for two years, and is now opening a satellite location in Los Angeles near LAX. Founded on a philosophy of providing easy-to-drive, cheap campervans for hire, Lost Campers is the leader in providing quality California camper van rental experiences.

Company owners Nick and Emma Thomson are native Australians who saw the potential in the U.S. market for campervans, a smaller, mini-van-sized camper with a low carbon footprint popular down under and in Europe. While very successful in the Bay Area, Lost Campers has been missing the market of Europeans and other world travelers who fly inexpensively and directly into Los Angeles. Comments Nick Thomson, "Up until now, travelers wishing to explore southern California could only rent a campervan in Los Angeles for an additional pick-up fee. And customers beginning in San Francisco could only drop in L.A. with a drop-off charge. Heeding our customers’ wishes and market demand, Lost Campers is opening a Los Angeles venue by March 1, 2010.” The location is to be announced, but will be proximate to LAX, (within a five-minute drive from the airport), and feature all of the amenities expected in Lost Campers’ multi-functional vans.

Lost Campers’ fleet consists of 50 American mini-vans retrofitted to contain a platform bed with storage below, curtains and are outfitted with all the necessities for camping and cooking. Camper vans are designed to seat and sleep* from 1-5 people. (*2-3 persons can sleep in the vehicle.) Additional equipment is available to rent, including sleeping bags, towels, bike racks, roof racks, electrical heaters, GPS navigation systems, tents, and more.

Lost Campers’ daily campervan rental rates are $29.99 off-peak (3-day rental requirement) to $59.99 during peak season, June 1 - September 21 (minimum 5-day rental). The San Francisco facility is located at 2955 Third St., between 25th and 26th streets, and is close to public transportation. For information and reservations (recommended), visit www.lostcampersusa.com or call 415-386-2693 or 888-LOST-VAN (567-8826).

Arizona Lost Dutchman State Park to close in June

In mid-January, the Arizona State Parks Board voted to approve the phased series of closures starting Feb. 22, culminating with the June 3 closure of Lost Dutchman, which attracted nearly 100,000 paid visitors last year. The closures were announced after the state swept $8.6 million to grapple with severe budget woes.

Ellen Bilbrey, spokeswoman for Arizona State Parks Department, said the closures were based on the economic performance of parks and not targeted according to locations or other considerations.

"It's a fiscal problem and it calls for a fiscal solution," Bilbrey said. She said although 99,000 visitors paid to enter Lost Dutchman in 2009, it cost $276,000 to keep the park opened, and revenue fell short by $9,000 last year. By comparison, Cattail Cove State Park at Lake Havasu, which will remain open, saw 85,000 visitors but is operating in the black, with more than $10,000 left over after costs.

Fee hikes proposed for Fairfax County, VA parks

The Fairfax County Park Authority is proposing fee increases at popular campgrounds, as well as pools, horse stalls and a bevy of other recreational outlets to help ease a projected $316 million budget shortfall.

Under the plan, campers would pay higher fees at both Reston's Lake Fairfax Park and Fairfax Station's Burke Lake Park, which have become fixes for getaways on the cheap, park leaders say.

Fees would rise $3 per night -- to $37 for those needing electricity and $28 without -- but park officials called the proposed changes nominal, saying they would not deter campers.

More than $4 million was cut from county parks in the current budget.

Americans' love affair with motorhomes

By Kevin Connolly
BBC News, Elkhart, Indiana

It was the Germans who invented the motor car and steered us all towards the boundless possibilities and endless problems of the age of internal combustion.

But it took the genius of America to recognise that with a little extra hammering and spannering the motor car could readily be converted into the motor home.

I am told it was a matter of days - weeks at most - before someone had converted the first horseless buggy into the first recreational vehicle (RV).

It was a clumsy-looking behemoth whose passengers rode - very slowly - high above the road surface on what was essentially a four-wheeled roof garden, complete with balcony.

But practicality was not the point. The point was Americans had brought their restless love of the open road and their romantic affinity for far horizons into the motor age.

25th RV show canceled for lack of vendors

BANGOR, Maine — The 25th annual Bangor Camping and RV Show scheduled for this weekend at the Bangor Civic Center has been canceled due to lack of interest from vendors, according to Bass Park Director Mike Dyer.

The event, which is organized by Bass Park and Civic Center staff, has been held every year since 1986. Dyer explained, however, that in order to fill the space at the Civic Center, at least three large vendors are needed. This year, only two had committed.

“It actually goes back to last year when dealers lost some of their co-op money [from RV manufacturers] to participate in the show,” Dyer said. “Last year, we cut the amount of rental space in half with the thought that something was better than nothing. This year, we were going to proceed that same way, but it didn’t happen.”

Workers make camp, settle in for N.D. winter

With an investment in propane and a bit of skirting to keep the heat under the trailer, a recreational camper can make a fine winter home.

At least it's suiting some folks in northwestern North Dakota, where tight housing from a booming oil industry has led a number of people to consider camping out over winter.

"They are hardy people," said Alice Olson, who operates White Buffalo RV Park and Campgrounds at Watford City. "It's the tough people still here."

Some of those "tough" ones are southerners from places like Florida and New Mexico, who are proving they can handle the North Dakota cold.

"They are kind of taking it as a challenge," Olson said.

Kathy Mita, manager of Sand Creek Estates at Tioga, said there are a number of people camping the winter in Tioga, although the cold in early January thinned the ranks a little. Sand Creek Estates has had two campers abandon ship and get homes and another declared during the January frigid spell that this is his last year.

Economy, cold couldn't keep RV snowbirds from Florida

SEBRING - For Leon Bluhm, there was never a question of whether he would come here again.

"We just came." The Bluhms winter in a double-wide at Leisure Acres, a 400-unit mobile home and RV park in south Sebring. Before they return to Illinois in April, each of the three children and their families will visit, Bluhm (sounds like "bloom") will make religious symbols on his scroll saw, and he'll both work and volunteer on fix-it projects.

Highlands County has about 20,000 seasonal residents. They show up as early as November - when the Rust Belt weather turns frigid - and go home in the spring.

Last year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tanked at 6,600, their portfolios were cut in half, and snowbirds wondered if they could afford to come back to Florida again.

What a difference a year makes. The Dow is up 4,000 points, the Bluhms had a good year farming and - here's the deciding factor - the Canadian cold fronts have been pitiless.

A week ago, when the temperature dropped to 20 degrees here, it was -19 in Flint, Mich. Yesterday, Flint's expected high was 27. It's in the 80s here.

Government Loans Available for RV Park Owners

A little known loan program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture may provide funding for qualified park operators or other RV businesses located in rural areas who haven’t been able to secure financing for improvements and expansions during the recession.

The USDA’s Rural Business Guaranteed Loan Program typically provides up to $10 million in funding for rural businesses that need loans for a variety of reasons, including refinancing, repairs, modernizations, development and expansions. A fact sheet detailing the USDA loan program for the Business & Industry Guaranteed Loan program can be obtained at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/rbs/busp/b&I_gar.htm.

“Local federally insured and regulated financial institutions are still making these loans,” Bill Garpow, executive director of the Recreational Park Trailer Industry Association (RPTIA), told park operators attending Cal-ARVC’s Education Day Jan. 13 at Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort and Marina.

“This program is good for a campground or any other rural business that is financially sound, can meet the program’s collateral requirements and has a justifiable need for the loan to make some good things happen in rural America. You can also use this kind of funding to purchase recreational park trailers for placement into a rental program. Another use might be to refinance the whole park and reduce your monthly cost of operations as a way to bring a profit back to your balance sheet. USDA is particularly interested in projects that could provide additional jobs and would conserve water or power.”

More visitors at Theodore Roosevelt NP in 2009

Despite a weak economy, 2009 brought more visitors to national parks across the country, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, ND.

“In a lot of cases, park visitation tends to go up when the economy is bad,” said Eileen Andes, chief of interpretation and public affairs at TRNP. “That could have to do with value. People are looking for value these days and national parks really are a good value.”

In 2008, about 516,800 visitors stopped at TRNP and though 2009 numbers will not be finalized until the end of February, about 579,000 were reported to have visited the park.

The U.S. has 58 national parks and of those, TRNP ranks 31st for visitation numbers.

DOJ Settles HIV Suit Against Alabama Resort

The Justice Department announced the settlement of an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) discrimination lawsuit against Wales West LLC, owner and operator of Wales West RV Resort and Train and Garden Lovers Family Park in Silverhill, Ala. The settlement, embodied in a consent decree, was approved today by Judge Callie V.S. Granade in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama.

In its complaint, the Justice Department alleged that Wales West LLC violated Title III of the ADA when it unlawfully denied full and equal services to a child and his family because the child has HIV. Specifically, the complaint alleged that Wales West LLC, upon learning that a guest family’s two-year-old child has HIV, banned the family from using the common areas of the RV resort, such as the swimming pool and showers. The child’s parents had planned a month-long stay at the family-themed RV resort while the father commuted to nearby Mobile, Ala., for ongoing cancer treatment. After Wales West LLC denied them full use of the facilities, the family left early the next morning.

Park Models Not Full-Time Residences

Park operators must not allow their recreational park trailers or ”park models” to be used as full-time residences. And they should also beware of the low-cost FEMA trailers, many of which have damage and mold problems in addition to failing to comply with established building codes.

Those were the two primary warnings issued Jan. 13 by Bill Garpow, executive director of the Recreational Park Trailer Industry Association (RPTIA), during CalARVC’s Education Day at Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort and Marina.

Winnebago Shares Rise With Demand At RV Show

Shares of Winnebago Industries Inc. (WGO) jumped Tuesday as an analyst said it appears the worst is behind the recreational-vehicle industry.

Thompson Research Group analyst Kathryn Thompson said in a note that attendance at the 2010 Florida RV Super Show in Tampa over the weekend--one of the most important shows in gauging retail demand--surpassed 50,000 for the first time ever. She said there was a meaningful positive difference in dealer sentiment, and it was obvious consumers were willing and able to buy RVs, with sales expected to increase 150% from a year ago.

"We have been speaking about an inflection point for the last several months, and this show not only supports that thesis but also appears to signal the industry is in recovery mode," Thompson said.

In addition, Thompson said inventory remains at historically low levels and used RV prices rose 1% in December following months of declines. Also, financing trends are showing big improvement, she said.

Sheila Davis, Winnebago public relations and investor relations manager, said the company hasn't released any news, and stock movement is likely related to the general improving health of the industry.

Campground Owners Oppose NH Tax

Campground owners had a chance to speak their minds at the state's Legislative Office Building Tuesday, upset over what they call an unfair tax that is hurting their business.

Last year the New Hampshire legislature passed HB 1445, a bill that imposed a 9 percent rooms and meals tax on campgrounds.

Opponents of the bill said it does more harm than good and was unfairly imposed, with no public hearing, and hurts the tourism industry greatly.

Some said that during the camping season a good percentage of people shopping in local grocery stores and plazas on a given weekend night are campers. Owners said campers won't want to pay twice, meaning once they get hit with the campground tax they will pass on the pizza from a local pizza parlor that night.

Iowa State parks camper days up in 2009

Iowa's state parks drew brisker business last year, and newly restored lakes proved to be a strong draw, according to newly released data.

The number of camper days rose to 714,592 in 2009, up 5.3 percent from flood-plagued 2008. Last year's attendance was 7.4 percent higher than the level five years earlier.

A camper day means one person staying one night. So a family of four staying one night counts as four camper days.

Including campground visits and other activities, 56 major state parks together drew an estimated 14 million visits last year, up 250,000 from 2008 and the highest total since 2006.

The success comes at a time when state park managers are debating closing lesser-used park areas because of state budget cuts. Further cuts could lead to closure of whole parks, Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Richard Leopold has said.

Snowbirds have a rollicking good time

ZEPHYRHILLS FL - Will Yancey sang and pranced like The King.

Beneath a gleaming overhead light and vaulted ceiling still decorated with icicle lights and shimmering snowflakes, he punctuated the words of "Don't Be Cruel" by dancing Elvis-like across the raised stage at Rainbow Village RV Resort, just south of State Road 54.

Lampooning the ravages of age, he grabbed at a phantom back spasm and tugged at an imaginary hamstring pull. More than 250 people, most of them residents at the retirement community, clapped enthusiastically and sang along.

In less time than it takes to say, "Thank you, thank you very much," Yancey was onto Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away." By the end of the first verse, he had climbed down from the stage and was on his knees, crooning to a smiling woman seated in a folding chair.

"Do you remember when you loved me?" Yancey sang, his silver bolo tie glittering in the light.

The crowd laughed.

According to Sue Flynn, manager of the RV park, Wednesday night's crowd, although it practically filled the community clubhouse, was a little light.

Montana State Parks Host Record Visits In 2009

Montana’s 54 state parks reported a record number of visits—2 million—last year.

“Eighty-three percent of those visits were by Montanans,” said Chas Van Genderen, State Parks Administrator. “Overall visit numbers have grown five of the past six years. Only 2008, with its high gas prices, showed a slight decrease.”

Thirteen parks hosted more visits than ever before—including Makoshika with its unique badlands scenery, Flathead Lake’s Wild Horse Island, and Tongue River Reservoir in the southeastern corner of the state.

RV Parks excluded from transient tax

The Gold Beach, Oregon, City Council Monday tentatively agreed to exempt recreational vehicles from the six percent transient tax charged occupants of hotels and motels within the Gold Beach city limits.

"We compete fiercely for business with other RV Parks and it will put us at a competitive disadvantage if we are charged the transient tax and have to pass that on to our customers while the RV Parks up the river don't have to pay the tax," said Julian Starr, proprietor of Turtle Rock Resort in Hunter Creek.

Starr said Turtle Rock does its own marketing for tourism and doesn't rely on the Gold Beach Promotions Committee. He told the City Council that Turtle Rock spends about $40,000 itself on marketing, second only to the Promotions Committee.

Arizona may close 13 state parks

Arizona officials are recommending the closure of 13 state parks in response to budget cuts enacted late last year.

The cuts spare some of the most popular parks, including Kartchner Caverns and Slide Rock. But officials say they may have to close more parks if they can't raise $3 million from entry fees by June 30, the end of the fiscal year.

The recommendations were released Monday. The State Parks Board is set to consider them Friday morning at a meeting in Phoenix. Board members must cut $8.6 million in response to midyear budget cuts enacted during the Legislature's December special session.

The proposal by State Parks staff includes three waves of closures. Four parks would close on Feb. 22, four on March 29 and five on June 3.

Campground residency rules strengthened in Jackson Township N.J.

Working on the premise that campgrounds in Jackson are for recreational use and short-term vacations — and not for permanent residency — the Jackson Township Council has adopted an ordinance that amends the present campground regulations. The vote to make the changes was 5-0.

In discussing the issue of campground residency, council President Mike Kafton said, “There are [some] campgrounds that have children [as residents] who are attending our school system, and it has become a burden to the taxpayers and our schools. We have to give some teeth to our code enforcement officer, and this ordinance creates that.”

“We can’t put the burden on the taxpayers and the schools,” he said. “There are kids coming from the campgrounds. Unfortunately, there are some [campgrounds] that are forcing us to create an ordinance because this has become a burden to the township.”

“We have to be more specific and give a time frame during the winter hours, when kids go to school,” he said. “That’s why the ordinance has been created. There are too many kids coming in [to Jackson schools] from campgrounds and the taxpayers are picking up the costs, which amounts to thousands and thousands of dollars.”

North Dakota state park wans approval to expand

East Grand Forks city leaders are hoping to add another 15 campsites to the Red River State Recreation Area, an improvement that would occupy all of the remaining space of what was known pre-flood as the Sherlock Park neighborhood.

The campground added 22 sites last summer, bringing the total to 99. “As soon as they opened them up in August, it was full again,” said Jim Richter, the city’s Economic Development and Housing Authority director.

2010 Workhorse Bosch Brake Recall Information

In May 2009 Workhorse mailed an “interim notice” to alert affected Workhorse owners of a defect in certain Bosch brake caliper assemblies used on Workhorse W20, W21 and W22 motor home chassis models. Pending an approved recall remedy for the problem, the interim notice described the authorized interim repair procedure, at no cost to the customer, for those brake problems related to the defect. However, brake repairs related to typical wear and tear or other issues are still the financial responsibility of the customer. As with any recall, misunderstandings about the defect and about who is responsible for what often arise.

The company has written an article which briefly explains the nature of the problem and how owners and technicians can determine whether a brake problem is related to the defect or not.

RVer saves cat, escapes burning motorhome

KATU.com
NEAR ALBANY, Ore. - A Washington man was able to rescue his cat and get out safely when his motorhome went up in flames on Interstate 5 Sunday afternoon.

The blaze happened around 1:20 p.m. at the rest area near exit 241 on I-5 northbound.

The motorhome, a 1979 Dodge Explorer owned by Charles Rogers (age unknown), was completely destroyed but firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to a Jeep attached to the back.

Firefighters say Rogers was having trouble starting the motorhome and after turning the ignition multiple times, smoke began pouring from the engine. By the time fire crews arrived, the motorhome was fully engulfed.

Damages are estimated at less than $5,000.

Canadian Snowbirds support California's Imperial Valley economy

Now that the Canadian dollar can go further in the U.S., winter visitors from Canada are tempted to stay longer and to spend more.

Les Smith, general manager for Desert Trails RV Park in El Centro, said the exchange rate between the United States and Canadian dollars has encouraged Canadian snowbirds to stay in the Valley.

“I think we’re doing very well,” Smith said. “The Canadian dollar is now on par with the U.S. dollar. I think it’s made Canadians more comfortable to come and stay longer.”

Carol and Jim Bremner, of Langley, British Columbia, stay at Desert Trails RV Park. Carol said they have increased their spending in the Valley because of the strength of the Canadian dollar.

RV dealers looking for a rebound

Today, dealers are hopeful that the sales slump is nearing its end. Attendance at this year's Pittsburgh RV Show -- which started yesterday and runs through Jan. 17 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center -- should be a barometer, as it's one of the first American RV shows of 2010.

"Last year at this time was probably at the bottom of the industry," said Rob Young, promoter of the Pittsburgh RV show.

The recession prompted people to hoard discretionary income, if they had any at all. The credit freeze meant people who wanted loans for more expensive motor homes couldn't get them, or had to come up with a larger down payment. People who already owned an RV elected to put a few more miles on the old one rather than trade for a new one.

It's not unlike the throes that beset the auto and housing markets over the same time period.

"Definitely, things are looking up. Shipments have been improving," said Phil Ingrassia, a spokesman with the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association, of Fairfax, Va.

Shipments of wholesale units are forecast to be up 27 percent in 2010, 203,000 units compared to 159,500 units shipped in 2009, the lowest number in years. Still, the 2010 forecast is "historically low," Mr. Ingrassia said. In 2006, 395,000 new travel trailers and motor homes were manufactured and shipped to dealers.

A Happy Hauler

But Wright, stores about 150 recreational vehicles on his Bolton property. He operates his own 24-hour a day business, Happy Hauler Towing, and Recovery Bolton Notch RV Storage, which he says has grown to be Connecticut’s largest RV storage facility.

His interest in RVs began by accident. In 1982, after stumbling upon a help-wanted ad seeking an RV salesman, Wright discovered not only that he enjoyed selling RVs, but that he was also good at it.

Within a year, Wright was promoted to sales manager.

But his personal life crumbled as he struggled with alcoholism and marital problems. Following a divorce and the loss of his home, he lived in a friend’s basement for several months before driving to Alaska on his motorcycle one summer.

When he returned to Connecticut, he says he got lucky; a friend offered him another job working with RVs.

“I stayed there two years and turned my life around. I was making a six-figure salary,” Wright recalled.

However, he realized that a critical need to haul campers was not being met by the company he worked for.

“I ended up leaving my comfortable job [in 1987] to start my own trucking camper business. I made $17,000 my first year,” Wright said, noting that he dipped into nearly $40,000 of his savings to stay afloat.

“I love working for myself,” Wright said.

Below 0 temps: Some RVers cope better than others

Gillette WY - At 3 a.m., scores of residents at High Plains Campground head outside to warm up their vehicles as they prepare to go to work.

Some of them may complain about the cold, but others will throw on some overalls and go to work, said Larry Simmons, a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver.

“That’s what we do,” he said.

Coping isn’t so easy for others.

Simmons’ neighbor John Benedict has had to contend with a flurry of problems caused by the cold.

Benedict, who works as a Coach America driver, has dealt with a furnace replacement, frozen water and sewer lines and even diesel pumps gelling at work because of the cold.

“It stinks,” said Benedict, who moved to Gillette from Florida about four years ago.

Inside his trailer, Benedict keeps his new furnace and two electric heaters going non-stop in order to keep it comfortable.

Outside, the water hookup is lined with insulation and two sets of heat tape in order to keep the water running into the camper.

“Al Gore has his head in a dark place,” he said about the global warming debate.

Community Event Welcomes Back Winter Texans

Gene and Linda Grabill's home is like any other.

Carpeted floors, reclining chairs and a cushy sofa dot the living room, while the hot chocolate-scented candle adds to the comfort factor.

The difference? Their home is on wheels.

The Grabills are Winter Texans. Although they hail from Pennsylvania, they load their fifth wheel RV and call Texas home from October through May.

And, on Wednesday, the Victoria Convention and Visitors Bureau welcomed about 250 such people to town.

The organization hosted "Welcome Back Wednesday" at the Victoria Community Center, offering giveaways, barbecue and exhibits to those in town temporarily.

Overnight RV Parking Proposal DOA

Easton’s Beach R.I.
Under a plan put forth by Economic Development Director Jonathan Stevens, RVs would be permitted to park overnight at a designated portion of the Easton’s Beach parking lot on weekdays from June until August, and seven days a week in May and October.

The same proposal had won the endorsement of the commission last year by a slim margin, but was scuttled due to public outcry before it could reach the council for discussion.

Security and enforcement of littering and alcoholic beverage rules, and liability due to an unlighted parking lot, possible night swimming were also cited as concerns.

In the end, the vote was unanimous not to support the proposal, but Armstrong added that he was happy to see the matter receive a good vetting and pointed to a new effort that he hopes will drum up some public input on how the city can improve the facility.

Dinghy Towing e-book A motor home offers us the freedom to explore the open road. We can go where we want when we want. But what happens when we arrive at a destination where we plan to stay put for a day, a week or a month? How do explore the area, or take a quick trip to the grocery store? One option is to disconnect everything from the motor home and take it. What a pain this can be just for a loaf of bread. Another option is to tow a vehicle behind the motor home. Now when we need a loaf of bread or want to take a day trip we have our transportation readily available. This makes much more sense, but just how do we do this? That's what this e-book is all about. It will explain everything you need to know about dinghy towing in an easy to understand format. Our goal with this e-book is to help you learn how to properly tow a dinghy, and to assist you in making the right decisions to meet your particular towing needs.

Maine State parks attendance up nearly 8% in 2009

Final figures for 2009 show that Maine state parks showed an almost 8 percent increase in both day use and camping over the previous year, despite wet summer weather and a poor economy.

The state Department of Conservation said this week that total attendance for the year was the largest in the past seven years. The numbers show an increase of 7.6 percent, more than 165,000 more visits, were made to the state parks last year than in 2008, according to figures from the department’s Bureau of Parks and Lands.

The nightly occupancy rate at Maine’s 12 state campgrounds was up overall by 1 percent, while the day use visits were up by 8.3 percent, officials said.

Rocky Mountain National Park '09 Visits Up 2.4%

Though more people visited Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park in 2009 than in the year before, it didn’t crack the 3 million visitor mark, but it came close, according to The Coloradoan, Fort Collins.

The park saw 2,823,415 visitors last year — 2.4% more than in 2008, according to National Park Service statistics released Tuesday (Jan. 5).

The park hit 3 million visitors six other times in its history: 1978, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003.

The most people ever to have visited the park was in 1999, when more than 3,186,000 people passed through the park’s boundaries.

Texas COE Park to be converted for RVs

The Herald-Zeitung
STARTZVILLE – Cranes Mill Park on Canyon Lake is undergoing a renovation and could be open as soon as the end of the year as an RV park, similar to Potter’s Creek Park.

The almost $3 million renovation is being paid for with federal stimulus money, said Marcus Schimank, Canyon Lake site manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The park, located on Farm to Market 2673, just past the village of Startzville, currently has about 46 campsites with tables and ground cookers. Campers staying overnight currently pay $8 a night on weekdays and $12 a night on weekends, according to the park’s operating policies.

When re-opened, park guests will pay between $14 and $18 a night to stay at the park, Schimank said.

The park will feature 65 camping sites, 50 of which will have full connections for RVs. Plans for the project had been under way for about two years and will incorporate a playground and two handicap spots close to restrooms.

Heavy use of the park spurred the Corps to add more connections and raise the prices to match those of the Potter’s Creek Park.

“We always had some plans for that park,” Schimank said.

Michigan looking for volunteer campground hosts

The Bay City Times - MLive.com
The state Department of Natural Resources is offering free camping this summer for outdoor lovers who volunteer as campground hosts at Michigan state parks or state forest campgrounds.

The Campground Host Program, established by the Department of Natural Resources, allows people to camp in a state park or state forest campground at no charge, in return for providing visitor assistance in the campground, officials said in a news release.

Campground hosts direct visitors to their campsites, answer questions about the park or state forest, arrange campground activities and perform light maintenance and other services, depending on the host's talents and interests.

Interested parties must be at least 18 years old, provide services five days per week (including weekends and holidays), for a total of 30 hours, serve a minimum of four consecutive weeks and furnish their own camping unit, equipment and personal items.

Although some of last year’s campground hosts will be returning this year, vacancies and a need for more hosts still exist at state parks and state forest campgrounds located throughout Michigan, officials say.

More information and an application is available online at www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers.

Forest Service Gets Push-Back From Seniors, Disabled

Maybe the U.S. Forest Service needs a dope slap. Any politician can tell you that there are two constituencies you don't want to mess with: senior citizens and the permanently disabled. Yet the Forest Service has riled both groups by proposing to eliminate the 50 percent discount at national forest campgrounds that has been available since 1965 to holders of lifetime senior and access passes.

The problem? As America ages, there are just too many of us qualifying for the discounts. That's hurting the bottom line of the private companies that manage roughly half of all Forest Service campgrounds and 82 percent of all campsites that can be reserved.

Until now, law and/or agency policy required private concessionaires to honor the passes and discounts for older or disabled people at facilities they manage. That makes sense, since public funding built these facilities and the public owns them. Contracting out their management may be a convenience for the agency, but it's little benefit for the visitor. For the public, it shouldn't matter who's cleaning the toilets or emptying the trash, as long as the work's being done. But it does matter, and here's why.

New Jersey RV's face new laws

NEW PROVIDENCE NJ — Commercial and recreational vehicles and trailers must meet new screening requirements for 2010 if they are parked in a residential zone.

The Borough Council has unanimously approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance governing the parking and storage of commercial and recreational vehicles in residential neighborhoods.

Specifically, the new law prohibits any commercially licensed motor vehicle, truck, van, transfer or other equipment from parking in a residential zone unless completely housed in a garage and sheltered from public view.

San Francisco's Candlestick RV Park draws the faithful

On a recent morning, Wes Bradford woke up in his red and gold 45-foot motor home, donned a San Francisco 49ers shirt and started working on dinner for 50.

Bradford, a Bakersfield resident, was nearly 300 miles from home, but he couldn't have been more comfortable: Candlestick RV Park, where his motor home was parked, has been a vacation destination for Bradford and many of his friends for two decades.

In a city where you're lucky to find a cheap hotel for $100 a night, Candlestick RV Park is truly one of a kind. It is the last motor home park in San Francisco - and if the Candlestick Point redevelopment ever moves forward, it could be the last ever.

Opened in 1988 by Chu Fung - who still owns and runs the place - the park is located in a desolate area of town, but it comes alive with regulars during football season and in the summer months, when vacationing Europeans like to stop in for a night or two.

Year of Changes in Work-camping

H.S. Cooper writes:
It was an affordable lifestyle – living at your workplace or nearby for free. Now many campgrounds and resorts want you to pay a reduced or “nominal” (which appears to be a favored word for employers) campsite fee, in addition to working for them at minimum wage. And most of these offer low hours, not even guaranteeing the money you make working will pay for your campsite, electricity and other expenses.

And there are those who have the “work-for-site, extra hours paid” offer. These employers require you to work a certain number of hours per week (usually between 20-30) for your campsite. Any hours worked over that time are paid. So if you were to work 24 hours a week for your site and you worked 30 hours, you would only get paid for 6 hours of work. The problem our friends have had with this is that if you figure out the value of the campsite and hours worked, you are getting very well below minimum wage.
